school will be participating in National
Sweater Day. This day was initiated
through the organization World Wildlife
Fund as a way of initiating participation
and conversation around energy
conservation. Students and staff at our
school are encouraged to wear their sweaters to school as the
temperature of the school will be lowered in an effort to
conserve energy. Students are encouraged to wear a sweater
as a way of acknowledging the importance of energy
conservation. Thank you for your continued support.

TRAFFIC SAFETY & PARKING
CONCERNS
There continues to be issues with the Kiss & Ride.
Parents are reminded that the Kiss & Ride lane is only
to be used if you are remaining in your car. Parents are
reminded that if you need to leave your car to pick up
a student from the school, you must park your car in
our visitor parking lot. Furthermore, we need to
remind drivers to please enter the parking lot in a
single file. There is not enough room in the school lot
to create a double lane entrance or to park at the
entrance of our lot. Our parking lot is designed to have
cars enter in single file and to circle around to the Kiss
& Ride whereby you can safely pick up your child.
Furthermore, it has come to our attention that at the
end of the school day, people are parking in the
driveways of residents who live on Edenbrook Hill and
neighbouring streets. Please be reminded that private
driveways are the personal property of the homeowner
and this practice is considered TRESPASSING.
Please be respectful of our fellow residents and park
only in designated parking lots and where streets
permit parking. Thank you for your cooperation.

Next Meeting:
Wednesday, February 24, 2016
Students being late for school has been an on-going
concern here at our school. We need your support in
reducing the number of late students on a regular
basis.
What is considered late?
@ 6:30 pm in the Library.

Late is when your child does not enter the
school with their class at 8:45 a.m.
All meetings are open to community members.
Please join us if you can.

Students often miss 10-15 minutes of the
same subject every day when late

It takes the office staff 10-15 minutes each
day to have students sign in and report to
class when late

When parents arrive at our Kiss N’ Ride after
8:40 a.m. there is a long line of cars which
will delay student entry to school
SCHOOL YARD SUPERVISION
A reminder to both parents and students that yard supervision
does not begin until 8:30 a.m.
Please note that waiting until the bell and then
dropping your child off at the front doors is
unacceptable and unsafe, as students are entering
the building alone and unsupervised.
3
Some helpful tips to get your child to school on time:

Leave your home 5-10 minutes earlier than usual.
Students can be dropped off at 8:30 a.m. and go
directly to the school yard. The yard is supervised from
8:30 a.m.—8:45 a.m. (until the school bell rings)

Car Pool with your neighbours/friends

Walk your child to school if you live close by
INCLEMENT WEATHER AND
TRANSPORTATION

Catholic District School Board. If transportation is
cancelled and parents or guardians choose to bring their
child to school, it is also their responsibility to pick them
up at the end of the day. Under extraordinary
circumstances an announcement may be made which
indicates that all Dufferin-Peel schools are closed.
WEB ACCESS TO TRANSPORTATION
INFORMATION

CHANGE IN WEATHER
As the weather continues to remain cold parents are
reminded that children need to dress appropriately.
We recognize that temperatures can change
throughout the day and suggest that children come
dressed in layers. Parents are encouraged to send an
extra change of clothing for younger students.
4
Students are always encouraged to wear appropriate clothing
for outdoor play, such as hats, mitts, snow pants and boots.
During the winter season, many parents are concerned about
school policy for outdoor recess. It is generally accepted that
when the wind chill factor drops below –25◦C, students
should not go outside for recess. Dufferin-Peel C.D.S.B.
policy uses a wind chill of –20◦C as the determining
temperature for modified recesses. At St. Angela Merici
School, students will remain inside when the wind chill is
reported at –25◦C or lower and we will modify the duration
of lunch recess when the temperature reaches –20◦C. As
always, ensure your child is prepared for the extremes of
Canadian weather.

entitled: “PRIDE IN
MY STRIDE:.
With the increase in our snowfall, it is
of utmost importance to remind
students that snowball throwing is
strictly forbidden. Every student has
been made aware of the importance of
this rule and how it prevents injuries
from happening. A snowball that hits another student and
causes injury can be seen as a weapon. Students have been
informed about the consequences for throwing snowballs
and that ignoring this rule will result in serious
consequences. Furthermore, students have been reminded
that climbing on top of snowbanks and/or tunneling in snow
banks is not only prohibited but also very dangerous. Please
have this conversation with your child(ren).
STUDENT ILLNESS-STAYING IN FOR
RECESS
Students who are ill should be kept home where they are
most comfortable and can get better sooner. A child who is
too ill to go out for recess is too ill to be at school. Your co‐
operation to keep your child home when he/she is ill is
appreciated.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION SAFETY:
OPHEA Guidelines
This is just a reminder of the Ontario Physical
Education and Health Guidelines for students
participating in physical education classes. It is very
important for the safety of our students that the
following key rules are followed:
As a school community, Wednesdays will continue to be our
“Waste Less Lunch Wednesdays”. Please remember to
place lunches in reusable containers to minimize waste in
our school. Thank you for supporting this initiative.
1. Students are to wear appropriate attire for
safe participation—t-shirts, shorts or track
pants.
2. Running shoes that provide good support
and traction are a minimum requirement.
3. All jewellery—hoop earrings, necklaces,
etc., are NOT to be worn.
Also, if there are any medical concerns—re.
asthma, severe allergies, etc., the school office and
classroom teacher MUST be informed.
If you have any questions or concerns please visit the
OPHEA website at: http://safety.ophea.net/elementary
or contact your child’s teacher. Thank you.
Region of Peel: 1st Notification
The region of Peel has mailed out letters regarding
outstanding immunizations. Peel Public Health
maintains and reviews the immunization records of all
students to ensure they meet the requirements to attend
school. Students with incomplete immunization

Historical Understanding of Key Issues
Related to Catholic Education
board did not need the permission of the common
school board to open a new or additional separate
school. The number of Catholic heads of family to
establish a separate school was lowered from twelve to
five. As a result, the number of separate schools grew
considerably.
5. Why did Catholics find the non-denominational
religious education of the common school unsatisfactory?
Catholics wanted separate schools where all the beliefs of the
Catholic Church would be taught, where the pupils would live
their faith in a sacramental and community manner in
proximity to the parish church and priest, and where religion
would permeate the reading, literature and history curriculum.
Furthermore, as modern times arrived, multiculturalism of the
public school’s student body necessitated the eradication of
the teaching of Christianity.
6. What sacrifices did Catholics have to make to send their
children to separate schools?
8. What effect did the Canadian Constitution, create
in the British North America Act (1867) (now
entitled either the Constitution Act or the Canada
Act), have on separate schools?
When the Fathers of Confederation came from New
Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Canada East, and Canada
West to meet in Charlottetown and Quebec, they
quickly concluded, in the words of one of the Fathers,
Sir Charles Tupper, that “Without this guarantee for
the rights of minorities being embodied in that new
constitution, we should have been unable to obtain any
Confederation whatever.”
Because the United Legislature of Canada East and Canada
West roughly had consisted of members advocating nondenominational common schools and half were in favour of
them, separate school legislation, for about fifteen years,
contained three obstacles to their existence:
DATES TO REMEMBER
a) Catholics could establish and support a separate school, but
had to continue paying common school taxes. Thus, they
paid tuition for their children in the separate school.
b) The separate school had no permanence of existence. If the
school board hired a Catholic as one of its teachers, then
the separate school ceased to exist. Separate schools kept
opening and closing in the early years.
c) In the cities the separate school board required the
permission of the common school board to open a new or
an additional separate school. Sometimes the permission
was not forthcoming.
d) The legislation required twelve Catholic heads of family
resident within a city, town or township common school
section. The townships’ common school sections were so
small that often there were not twelve resident Catholic
families.
7. Were these four obstacles removed?
