PREREQUISITE(S):
Students should have BLS for the Healthcare Provider (CPR for the
Professional Rescuer) prior to enrolling in the course. A CPR class will be
offered during the first couple weeks of class for students needing to meet this
requirement. If students do not have an appropriate CPR certification prior to
class, and the student fails to attend the CPR course offered or another one
prior to the deadline assigned, the student will be required to withdraw from
this course. Only certain CPR courses will sufficiently meet this requirement.
Therefore, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain a determination from the
faculty member.
REQUIRED TEXT(S):
Jones & Bartlett Publishing - “Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick
and Injured” 10th edition by American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
(AAOS) (ISBN 9781284032840), and its associated workbook (ISBN
9781284045093). Both books may be available in a discount combination
package. Students may use the e-text if he/she wishes to do so. However, a
print version, unused workbook is required for the course. A used textbook
is acceptable if the student so desires. The textbook and workbook are both
available at the University Bookstore.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Training and education is provided through classroom lecture, class/group
discussion (didactic), skill demonstration and practice (lab), and actual patient
care observation in either an emergency room or in a pre-hospital setting
(clinical/field internship). Emphasis is on providing basic knowledge and
skill proficiency in the delivery of emergency care. The course includes basic
life support procedures with evaluation, planning, interventions, and reevaluation in regards to the acutely ill or injured patient. Successful
completion of this course (which includes all state regulatory issues and the
required background check clearance) and successful completion of the
National Registry of EMT written and skills exam will allow you to apply to
the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services for EMT-B certification.
REQUIRED
SUPPLIES/ADDITIONAL
COSTS:
Medical equipment will be provided for the student’s use during the course.
However, a pocket mask with an oxygen inlet port is required, and is
purchased by the student. Likewise, students are required to purchase
appropriate uniforms for use during clinical rotations. Lastly, there are several
other costs associated with this course which will be provided upon
commencement of the course.
2
CLASS SCHEDULE:
Class meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.
Occasionally, attendance will be required on other days and will be announced
in advance to allow the student to make proper arrangements. The additional
days will be a weekday evening and/or Saturday. Several class sessions will
meet until 10:00 p.m., and will be announced at least a week in advance.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES/GOALS:
Cognitive: At the completion of this course, the student will be able to
demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate the clinical
information relative to the role of an entry level Emergency Medical
Technician.
Psychomotor: At the completion of this course, the student will be able to
demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of
an entry level Emergency Medical Technician.
