A person of conscience… chooses to do the right thing, even when it is hard takes time to think and pray before making decisions knows that their actions and decisions affect all those around them thinks of others before themselves CONSCIENCE is the voice of God within us. As you develop your conscience, you will learn to make decisions that will make sure you will always have love in your life. Our conscience reminds us how to act towards other people and how to be a good friend. Students are expected to: √ Remain seated while eating √ Not to share food (Sabrina’s Law Policy re: allergies) √ Chat quietly with classmates √ Dispose of all garbage and clean up desk and class before leaving INCLEMENT WEATHER CANCELLATIONS / BUS During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio stations: VIRGIN RADIO FM99.9 CHUM AM1050 3 CJCL AM590 CJBC (FR) AM860 CHFI FM98.1 EZ ROCK FM97.3 CFTR AM680 CFRB AM1010 FM Z103.5 FM93.1 CFNY FM102.1/AM640 FM100.7/AM1540 CHIN CBC FM99.1 CTV CITYPULSE GLOBAL NEWS CANADA AM You can also check the following websites for delays or cancellations: http://www.stopr.ca We suggest that you save these sites as favorites in your browser for easy reference. LATE ARRIVALS It is important that your child arrive at school on time. Late arrivals have a direct impact on learning in school and they also disrupt the classroom teacher during lessons. Your assistance is appreciated in supporting your child’s learning by reinforcing that punctuality is an important responsibility that should be developed not only for success in school, but later in life as well. RECESS BREAKS Recess breaks serve a special purpose in the daily life of the school. Students are expected to go outside for fresh air and exercise. If you child is sick, please keep him/her at home until they are well. This prevents the risk of your child spreading their illness throughout the classroom. There is NO indoor supervision at recess as staff are occupied elsewhere or on duty outside. We ask that students dress appropriately (i.e. coats, gloves, mitts, boots etc.). Where possible please put identification (your child’s initials) on your child’s belongings. If they are dressed warmly, they are better prepared to participate in outdoor activities during recess and noon hour. Please be advised that students are kept indoors at recess during the winter only when the weather conditions are extremely cold. ELEMENTARY PROGRESS REPORTS Elementary Progress reports (Gr. 1-8) will be sent home on Wednesday, November 17th. The Elementary Progress Report is designed to show a student’s development of learning skills and work habits during the fall of this school year, as well as a student’s general progress in working towards the achievement of curriculum expectations in all subjects. The Progress Report is not a formal report card. Students will not be receiving letter grades indicating achievement of overall expectations. As a result, an interview with parents is not mandatory during the Progress Report period. First term report cards will be sent home on Feb. 2nd and first term interviews will take place on Feb. 4th and 5th. It is expected that all students will be participating in the interview process at that point. VALUABLES Just a reminder that students should not bring to school items of value. These may be things of sentimental value or monetary value. This is, also, not the place where cards or any other collectibles are traded. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to the St. Jude Cross Country team for a successful season of running. We had 17 students participate in the Mississauga Brampton Central family meet at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton on October 16th. Out of the 17 students 4 runners participated in the Board Cross Country finals. St. Jude community is very proud of all the runners. Coaches Urbaniec and Quach are very proud of you all. 4 ANAPHYLACTIC INFORMATION DOGS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY We would like to remind you that St. Jude Catholic School is an allergen aware school. There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life threatening reactions. In accordance with Dufferin-Peel policy, parents and students are reminded that dogs are not allowed on school property. With the excitement that could occur at arrival and dismissal time, dogs may be very unpredictable. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction. The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex. An anaphylactic reaction involves symptoms from two or more body systems. We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain nuts, nut oils or derivatives (e.g. peanut butter, peanuts, or peanut oil) which could potentially harm a pupil. Please do not send food for birthday or special occasions. There are many alternatives such as stickers and pencils. If you have any questions please talk to your child’s teacher. We look forward to our co-operation in making this a safe year for all our pupils. DISTRIBUTION OF MEDICATION Please be advised that for safety reason, no child should bring any form of medication to school without prior approval from the office. The school will store necessary medication if a Request Form has been filled out and signed by the parent/guardian. Forms are available in the office. Please note, the school cannot administer medication to your child with the exception of an Epi-Pen in the instance of an anaphylactic reaction. EPI-PENS If your child has a prescription for an Epi-Pen AutoInjector, please ensure that your prescription is up to date (i.e. the Epi-Pen has not expired) and an EpiPen is brought into school for storage. Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually. Please see the office if you have any questions or concerns. Please let the office know immediately if you become aware of an allergy or medical condition (e.g. seizures, etc.) that may impact upon the health and well-being of your child. For the safety of our students please do not allow your dogs on school property. EMERGENCY INFORMATION It is vital that we are able to contact you during school hours, should an emergency arise. We have on record telephone numbers for home, work and an emergency contact person. In order to keep our records up-to-date, please ensure that the office has updated information by returning the Student Verification Sheet provided by the teacher earlier in the year. INDOOR SHOES!!!! Please send a pair of ‘indoor running shoes’ to school with your child. These shoes should be worn only inside the school. These shoes would also be worn inside the gym! REMINDERS AND RESOURCES: COLD AND FLU SEASON As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person 5 through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October. REGIONAL HEALTH UNIT RESOURCES Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their websites.
