HOLY NAME OF MARY Catholic Secondary School NEWSLETTER Principal’s Report T his year marks an historic year for Holy Name of Mary. For the first time in its history we have our own home. We have moved into this beautiful Brampton facility with a staff of dedicated and highly motivated individuals who have been working hard throughout the summer to ensure that all was ready for the opening in September. After a wonderful beginning we are well positioned to move forward and continue on our road to success. We have 705 young women enrolled at Holy Name of Mary and these young women are keen on carrying on the tradition of academic excellence. They have delved into the curriculum and the extra curricular activities with enthusiasm and hard work. We welcome our new 2008-2009 elected Catholic School Council; the chair is Mr. Stephen Biffis, Vice Chair Mrs. Marcia Zozzolotto and all our elected Council members who have quickly embraced their role with the vision of excellence in Catholic Education as passionate and devoted school advocates. I would invite you to join our monthly Catholic School Council meetings held the third Wednesday of each month here at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Secondary School. Regular updated School Council information is also available on the school website. H oly Name has made the move and we have settled into our new home. But we are not to get too comfortable as this is not our last stop. In fact nothing here in this life is permanent. November is the last month in the Church’s liturgical calendar and begins with the feast days of All Saints and All Souls. These two feasts and the entire cycle of readings reminds us By Silvana Gos, Principal The opening of our school year has been a very eventful one. Within the first two months we have had 60 girls participate in our Camp Olympia leadership retreat, all our Grade 9 students have gone on class retreats with Chaplain Mayne-Devine We have had our Pumped in Pink Campaign for Breast Cancer. Ms. Coulson and Ms. Gilchrist along with a team of HNM volunteers and students, succeeded in heightening the awareness of breast cancer, its prevention and cure as well as gather donations totaling over $8,400.00. We are all extremely proud of our community efforts. November began with a school mass of Remembrance as we came together as a school community to remember and pray for our loved ones. We continued on with Awards Nights which honoured the achievements and dedication of our students and the hard work they have put into their studies. Girls Night Out will be a chance for our Grade 9 students to participate in an evening filled with various activities to make them feel welcome in a high school setting. Our Grade 8 Information Night will take place on Wednesday November 26th at 7pm. This is the evening where we invite all Grade 8 students to come and visit our school and find out how to join our exciting Chaplain’s Report NOVEMBER 2008 community. On November 27th we are having our Mother Daughter Night and once again it will be a wonderful evening for all mothers and daughters of Holy Name of Mary to come together for a fun filled evening of laughter, food and entertainment. In the spirit of HNM our months are filled with a myriad of after school events, but our focus is always on developing and improving our student’s skills across the curriculum. As we move towards our first formal reporting period, I would like to stress the importance of attendance and completion of homework. We will be hosting a Parent/Teacher interview night on December 11th and I would urge every parent/guardian to mark this date on your calendar and come in and speak to the teachers about your daughter. Open communication and sharing of information is the cornerstone of a successful student. In closing, I would like to thank you, the parents for your continued support. It is when we work as a team and believe in the success of the young people we serve, that we will truly find success. God Bless By Paul Mayne-Devine that, like Holy Name has been the past year, we are pilgrims on a journey and we do not find our final rest until we are with God. This reality of our faith shapes the way we look at ourselves, our lives and our world. All that we are and do are weighed against that ultimate destiny. This is what we attempt to teach our students each and every day at Holy Name of Mary. We have been made for a great destiny. We have a purpose for our living and a responsibility to use what we have been given to create something lasting. As we head into the last weeks of 2008 and begin our preparations for the Christmas season may God help us in all our endeavors. 115 Glenvale Blvd., Brampton, Ontario Telephone: 905-458-4451 Guidance Report Guidance and Carreer Education News W elcome back to an exciting year in the lives of all of our students.
