PPRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
We hope you had a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year with your families.
As a community, we have come together to support one another.
We ask for your prayers and help for one our students, Aaryan. He is a ten-year
old boy of Vietnamese-Afghan descent. He was diagnosed with aplastic anemia
in November 2015.
Aplastic anemia is a rare, life-threatening bone marrow failure disease in which
the body fails to produce enough blood cells. Over the next while, he will need to
visit the hospital twice a week to receive blood transfusions just so he can be
stable enough to go on with his day. Although there are drug treatments to
suppress this disease, the only cure for Aaryan is through a bone marrow
transplant. Please find it in your hearts to become a committed registered donor;
you could be saving Aaryan’s life or that of many others in need. To see if you
could be a match – you need to do a buccal swab kit (to collect cell samples from
your mouth- more info at One Match).
If you are between the ages of 17-35 to please go out and register – there is an
event in honour of Aaryan – a swab clinic in Markham on January 23, 2016 more
info at: Aaryan Swap Clinic January 23 - Markham
Please share this information with your family and friends. For more information
please go to: www.match4aary.com
We are looking to do a community event at the school – once we have any
information we will share it with you.

ST. JOACHIM – FATHER OF MARY
St. Joachim was a man of Galilee, husband of Anne, and both he and Anne were in the decline of life
when Mary was born. While Joachim was away from home he had a vision that Anne was to be
blessed with a child, and that on his return home, his wife shared the news of the visit from an angel
who had revealed to her the same good news. There was ancient belief that a child born of an
elderly mother who had given up hope of having offspring was destined for some high purpose and
would be blessed by all the world.
Prayer to St. Joachim
St. Joachim, you are the father of our Blessed Virgin Mary.
We pray that you will keep watch over our school
Help the students, parents and staff members and all who enter within, to uphold your name.
Guide them as you guided Mary.
Help them to grow strong and spread their faith.
We need your strength each day so that we can be a peaceful, non-violent and loving community.
St. Joachim, Pray for us.
(Althea Taylor, 1998)
THE VIRTUE OF SELF CONTROL
“Self-control is the chief element in self-respect, and self-respect is the chief element in courage.”
Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War
Let us pray... for the virtue of self-control so that we will resist the temptation to
cause harm to ourselves or to others around us.
A person with self control.....

is patient

knows how to wait his-her turn

can calm him/herself down and think before reacting to situations

knows how to avoid physical aggression(hitting, kicking, pushing, etc.)

can think things through
Self control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that we will regret. It also helps us to resist the
temptation to do something that will harm ourselves or others. Each time you exercise self-control you grow stronger
in the Lord and invite peace to settle over life as you avoid any guilt you may feel from having made a poor decision.
From the perspective of the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations, a person with self control...






Has a positive, confident sense of self and others
Adapts to situations in light of the common good
Thinks reflectively to solve problems
Applies effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving & resource
management skills
Reflects on personal values, abilities and aspirations
Participates in leisure and fitness activities for a balanced and healthy lifestyle
Let us now pray …for the virtue of self-control so that we will resist the temptation to cause harm to ourselves and
others around us.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to Ms. Q and her family on the arrival of Lauryn Audrey born on January 1st weighing
8 pounds, 11 ounces. The prayers and wishes of the entire school community are with Ms. Q. and her
family. We would also like to congratulate Mr. Bude, one of our Educational Resource Workers on the
birth his daughter, Tinashe, on December 19th.

STUDENT COUNCIL AND FAITH AMBASSADORS
“Whoever wants to serve me must follow me, so that my servant will be with me where I am.
And my Father will honor anyone who serves me.”
John 12:26
Our Student Council and Faith Ambassadors have been busy living out their faith through
service and the modelling of our Catholic School Graduate Expectations. Since October, they
have been selling popcorn and cookies to raise money to purchase new gym equipment.
During the Advent season, they were responsible for decorating the Christmas tree, and
creating posters to remind us all of the true meaning of Christmas, collected non-perishable food items for our Christmas
food drive and raised over $2600 in Gift cards to support families in need in our school community. Thank you for your
service and contributions to our School.
INCLEMENT WEATHER, BUS CANCELLATIONS & SCHOOL CLOSURES
During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruptions to bus transportation and
regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is
usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio stations:
CKFM 99.9
CHUM 1050
CFTR 680
CFNY 102.1
CFTO
CBC
CJCL 590
CHFI 98.1
CFRB 1010
CJEZ EZ Rock 97.3
CJBC (FR) 860
Z103.5
CHIN 100.7 FM/1540 AM Weather Network
CJMR/CHWO 1250
CityPulse
FOXY 88.5 FM
Global News
The message usually takes the following form: “All buses for the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board have been canceled.” This means that buses are cancelled for the entire day.
Or, to indicate school closures: “The schools and offices of the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board have been closed.”
Should the announcement refer to cancellation only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this does NOT affect St. Joachim.
EXTREME WEATHER PROCEDURES
The board policy states that when the temperature or equivalent wind chill temperature is minus 25 degrees
Celsius or lower, children shall be kept indoors. The amount of time outdoors should be reduced for children
when the temperature is -20 degrees Celsius or colder. Weather conditions are reviewed daily and decisions
around outdoor play and length of recesses are determined. Please ensure your children are appropriately
dressed for outdoor play with hats, scarves, mittens, boots and snow pants/snowsuit. On wet and slushy days, students
often get wet, therefore it is helpful if students have a change of clothing (e.g. sweat pants and shirt) that can be left at
school or in their backpack as it is often difficult for parents to leave work to bring an extra set of clothes.
STUDENT ILLNESS – STAYING IN DURING RECESS
Students who are ill should be kept home where they are most comfortable and can get better, sooner. A
child who is too ill to go out for recess is too ill to be at school. Your co-operation to keep your child home
when he/she is ill is greatly appreciated.

LIBRARY NEWS
Forest of Reading
Each year the Ontario Library Association prepares lists of new Canadian books for
different grade levels. Students are invited to read the appropriate books and vote for
their favourite title.
Blue Spruce Book Club is for Grades FDK to 2. Mrs. Dudycz will read a book each week
during the students’ regular period, and then the students will vote when all the books
have been read.
For the Express Reading Club (Grades 3 – 4), Silver Birch (grades 5 - 6) and Red Maple (Grades 7 – 8), students read the
books and attend meetings to discuss their reading. These clubs are available on a sign-up basis in early January. French
language books will also be available for Le Prix Peuplier and Le Prix Tamarac Express.
Book Fair
The Book Fair is coming! It will be held on February 4, 5 and 8th. More information will follow shortly.
ENVIRONMENT CLUB NEWS
We are looking forward to seeing everyone wear their comfiest sweaters for
NATIONAL SWEATER DAY on February 4th. We wear a sweater to remind everyone
that if every Canadian turned down their thermostat by two degrees Celsius each
winter, 2.2 megatonnes of carbon dioxide could be saved every year — equivalent to
taking 350,000 cars off the road (World Wildlife Fund). This means that we will help
to reduce the amount of harmful toxins and pollutants released into the environment!
We are also reminding all families that ...
... St. Joachim continues to accept clean 4L milk bags. They will be shipped to Milk Bags Unlimited, who will cut and weave
the milk bags into mats and then ship them to Sierra Leone to assist with the Ebola outbreak. All bags can be sent to
school and placed into the labelled box in the front foyer.
... and St. Joachim still recycles printer cartridges, cell phones, laptops and digital cameras through the
THINK RECYCLE PROGRAM. After joining the program in May 2011, the St. Joachim community has collected
over 200 cartridges, 50 cell phones, 8 laptops and 1 mp3 player for recycling or refurbishing.
By bringing your milk bags and used small electronics to St. Joachim, we are helping to keep nonbiodegradable items out of our landfills. Thank you for your help!
LATE TO SCHOOL?
School begins promptly at 9:00 A.M. Students and parents are reminded that each student has the
responsibility to be on time. Arriving late disturbs the students in the class, interferes with the program
of instruction, and centers attention on the latecomer. Please help us teach the value of being on time,
as the number of late students continues to be a concern.
January 2016
DROP OFF AND PICK UP SAFETY
The front driveway entrance by the office is NOT to be used to drop off or pick up students. Students should not to be
entering the school by the front door. Please use the Kiss and Ride dedicated spot at the side of the school. Remember
that if you need to get out of the car with your child, you must park your car rather than use the Kiss and Ride lane. If
the morning school bell has rung, teachers are required to go to their classes and students arriving after the bell cannot be
dropped off at Kiss and Ride. They must then be taken to the front office to get a late slip. Thank you for following these
steps to ensure the safety and supervision of all our students.
