Oude-Reimerink PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Family of Schools Brampton North East Trustee A. Da Silva Parish St. Anne Parish Priest Father J. Cherickal Associate Pastor Father F. Marrone Parish Telephone 905 453-1303 “Through A Celebration Of Our Faith All Who Enter Our School May Grow Together As A Christian Community” The season of Advent is upon us, a time when we plan to celebrate the coming of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. We are caught up in a multitude of tasks: buying gifts, baking treats and visiting loved ones. Some of us may have travel plans but we know what is said about the best-laid plans. There is no guarantee that our plans will ever be realized. God’s plans, however, are always fulfilled. As we joyfully await the Feast of the Nativity, let us mark our Advent path with the signs of love, acceptance, patience, caring, compassion and little acts of kindness and forgiveness. Thank you to our families who had donated to our Gift Card Drive. We will continue to accept donations. We hope to see our families at our Family Advent Mass at St. Anne’s Church on Wednesday, December 9th at 7 p.m. May the joy of Christmas fill your hearts with Love, Hope and Peace. Wishing you a holy and happy Christmas season. Your Admin Team, I. Judd & M. Di Nunzio Message from the Neville-Lake family to the St. Joachim School Community: Ours is a story that can never be erased from your heart. But together we can imagine a circle of compassion that is complete, with no one standing outside of it. Thank you for all your support. It means the world to us. Jennifer & Edward Neville-Lake @StJoachimDPCDSB 1 THE VIRTUE OF HOPE “EVERYTHING THAT IS DONE IN THE WORLD IS DONE BY HOPE.” Martin Luther A person of hope is … inspired and inspires others optimistic one who seeks good things from life one who sees the good in the world God helps us to work for a more peaceful world even when we feel discouraged. From the perspective of the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations, a person of hope... Sees more good than evil in the world Acts legally and morally May the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Rom. 15:13) THE ADVENT WREATH One of the most important ways we mark this time of waiting is through the Advent wreath. The Advent wreath holds four candles which are lit on the Sunday of each of the four weeks of Advent. There are three violet (purple) candles and one rose (pink) candle, each representing 1,000 years. Added together, the four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for their Savior. Purple is the liturgical color of the Advent season (the same as Lent), which represents penance. The Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday. On this day we celebrate that our waiting for Christmas is almost over. Rose is a liturgical color that is used to signify joy, so we light the rose candle on the third Sunday of Advent. Each of the candles represents the light of Christ in the World. On the first Sunday, we light a purple candle, representing Hope. On the second Sunday of Advent, we light another purple candle, the candle of Faith. The third Sunday of Advent is when the pink candle is lit, representing Joy. The fourth candle is purple which represents Peace. On many Advent wreaths, there is a fifth white candle in the centre that represents Jesus’ birth. It is a reminder that Jesus is the light of the world. When we follow Him, we will never find ourselves in darkness. ADVENT FAMILY MASS Thank you to Father James for celebrating an Advent Family Mass for our school community at St. Anne’s Parish. This mass will be held on Wednesday, December 9th at 7:00 P.M. We hope that all families come together to celebrate this wondrous season as a school community. Our school choir will be singing. GIFT CARDS This year, as always we would appreciate your help in supporting the less fortunate in our school and church community. We are asking your support in purchasing gift certificates/cards only for our Christmas Drive. No gifts will be collected. Parents and students are asked to buy a gift certificate/card in any denomination and bring it to school by December 11th, so that we have time to distribute them to those in need. WINTERY WEATHER Winter is here and it is important that your children are dressed appropriately. Children who are too sick to go outside at recess should be resting at home. We ask parents to ensure that children come with mitts/gloves, winter outerwear, hats, boots and scarves. Please put your child’s name first name and last initial in articles such as snow pants and boots. It saves a great deal of confusion when they are all hanging on the racks outside the classrooms. INDOOR SHOES We also recommend that students bring an extra pair of socks and mitts and have a pair of indoor running shoes. Running shoes are the minimal safety requirement for the mandated Daily Physical Activity. It is imperative that all students have a proper pair of running shoes for Physical Education classes. Running shoes with platforms or wheels are not safe. Please ensure your child has a proper pair of running shoes left at school or in their school bag on a daily basis. PED POLICY – PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES POLICY The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission. Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be advised that the DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans. PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration. The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school-sanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas. Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices. BREAKFAST CLUB REMINDER Just a reminder that the Breakfast Club doors do not open until 8:30. You may not drop your children off prior to 8:30 as they will be unsupervised. The new centre will be modelled after St. James Catholic Global Learning Centre in south‐east Mississauga. Like the St. James Catholic Global Learning Centre, the learning experience to be offered at the proposed Catholic Global Learning Centre North embraces a global focus. Modelled after an internationally recognized program, the Catholic Global Learning Centre North will teach the Ontario Curriculum via an integrated, inquiry‐based approach aligned with the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations. All students attending this school will participate in this program. Once the program has been established, the plan is to apply for formal certification as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program and Middle Years Program site. Interested parents and guardians are asked to complete an online survey that can be accessed from the board website’s main page at www.dpcdsb.org or, also, from any Dufferin‐Peel elementary school website. Participation in this survey is voluntary and parents may choose to stop completing the survey at any time. Parents will not be asked to identify themselves or their child/children. The information collected through the survey is for planning purposes only and will be used to inform recommendations about the potential site and more details which will follow at a later date. Please note that the survey closes on December 5, 2015. DATE EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 18, 2015 Board Policy 24.00 ‐ Access to Elementary Regional Programs of Choice The process for accessing elementary regional programs of choice must be equitable for all eligible pupils within the Board’s jurisdiction. If applications received by the due date exceed the available pupil places allotted to the regional program, a lottery process specific to the regional program will be activated to fill available pupil places. All eligible applicants, including siblings of pupils currently registered in the regional program, will participate in the lottery process.
