Remembrance and Peace
Lord Jesus Christ,
Those who we remember this month are examples of your words.
“Greater Love than this no one has than to lay down one’s own
life for a friend.”
This month we remember all those who lived and died for us;
their energy and their effort to defend our freedom for our loved ones
and for our country.
Teach us to appreciate the value of patriotism…
a true and Christian love of country.
Let us grow in a love for our country that consists not of following blindly,
But of working together to make it the land of goodness that it should be.
Let our patriotism be such that it will not exclude the other nations of the
world, but include them in a powerful love of country that has room for
all others too.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
November is a time of remembrance. We honour and remember those who died
for our freedom and on All Saints Day and All Souls Day, we remember those who
meant so much to us. May our fondest memories of our lost loved ones bring us
peace. We encourage all students to wear a poppy during this time.
It was a busy month at school. Our junior girls and boys Volleyball team
represented St. Joachim with pride as did our Cross Country team at the Brampton
North East Meet and five students advanced to the Board finals.
Progress reports will be going home Tuesday, November 17th with parent/teacher
interviews to follow on Thursday, November 19th. Please be sure to connect with
your child(ren)’s teacher should you have any concerns. We look forward to the
month ahead as we prepare for the Christmas season, a season of giving. God
bless.

THE VIRTUE OF CONSCIENCE
“CONSCIENCE IS THE AUTHENTIC VOICE OF GOD TO YOU.”
Rutherford B. Hayes
A person of conscience …

chooses to do the right thing, even when it is hard

takes time to think and pray before making decisions

knows that their actions and decisions affect all those around them

thinks of others before themselves
From the perspective of the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations, a person of conscience...

 Makes decisions according to gospel values
Accepts accountability for one's own actions -
Therefore I do my best always to have a clear conscience toward God and all people.

IT’S GETTING CHILLY!
In order to protect the health and safety of school aged children in Peel, the Peel Health Department
has developed guidelines for periods of extreme weather conditions. Weather information is
gathered from Environment Canada and School Board guidelines are followed when sending students
outside. Students should come dressed appropriately for winter weather (hats, mitts, etc.) For
health reasons and to help keep the school clean, we would request that the students have a pair of
indoor shoes. Please ensure that they are properly labelled and have non-skid marking soles.
Students will be asked to leave their outdoor boots/shoes outside their classrooms. Please note that
in the event of an emergency evacuation, students will not have the opportunity to put boots on. This is another reason
for students to have indoor shoes. Thank you for your help and cooperation.
INCLEMENT WEATHER BUS CANCELLATIONS
Please be advised that during the winter months, inclement weather may cause
disruption to bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel
school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 am and will be
announced on the radio and television stations identified below.

at www.insuremykids.com (download brochure) or by calling toll free at 1-800-463-KIDS (5437).
COLD AND FLU SEASON
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be
vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding
good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the
prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as
reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized
from our regional health units.
A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the
year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person through hand contact.
Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October.
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as out-lined on the
Peel Health website. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at home.

Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth
Time
Students need to learn to tell time on both
analogue and digital clocks. The world is
increasingly digital but there are still analogue
clocks in use. Telling time helps develop skills in
proportional reasoning, fractions, skip counting
and understanding elapsed time.

What do we mean by “mindset”?
Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have for
ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our behavior
and influence our responses to daily events.

INFORMATION LETTER Partnering for Change Dear Parents/Guardians: At Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board, we believe that we are called to create a Catholic learning and working environment that is safe, caring, inclusive, and welcoming. Together with Central West Community Care Access Centre (CW CCAC), the Dufferin‐Peel community is continuing with a model of support for students that began last year in some schools. The integrated occupational therapist (OT) model of support was developed and studied by CanChild, a research centre at McMaster University. This model provides educational opportunities for our teachers to learn more about how children develop motor skills and how they can promote motor skill development through classroom activities. In this model, the OT works in the school with select students. She assists teachers, where appropriate, in learning more about motor development in all children and how to help children who may be having difficulty with some motor skills. OTs are health professionals who work with children in many different settings and who have an expertise in fine and gross motor skill development. Fine motor skills are related to tasks such as printing and writing, cutting with scissors, opening juice boxes and doing up zippers. Gross motor skills include activities like jumping, getting onto the school bus, climbing stairs and running. As you may know, the school has a team of staff (resource teachers, support staff) who work with educators to help students achieve their greatest potential. The OT will be part of the school team process and will be in the school on a scheduled basis. She will spend time in our classrooms, gym, and playground. She will observe children and work with school staff to offer instructional methods that may make it easier for children to learn and engage in motor‐based activities. If the OT feels that your child is continuing to have difficulty learning new motor skills, more than is typical for his/her age, she or another member of the school team will contact you. The OT will be spending much of his/her time in kindergarten and primary classrooms supporting the many activities children do at this age to help develop their motor skills. The OT will be working at the school with the broader school team and will be available to teachers to provide support as needed. She/he will work with teachers to share useful information and ideas that support student learning. Educational sessions will be offered for parents as well – watch our school newsletter for details. We hope that you will introduce yourself to the OT when you are in the school to attend a parent function or to visit your child's classroom. If you have concerns about your child’s ability to do motor‐based activities at home, feel free to let the OT know. If you have any questions about this project, please talk with your child’s principal. You may also contact Susan Wynes at CW CCAC, at 905‐796‐0040 ext. 2333. LOVING LEARNING AND LEADING We believe that each one, created in the image and likeness of God, is called by name into the Dufferin‐Peel community, to realize the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations to the fullest extent possible as we all journey from the early years to vocation. “Each one called by name” (Isaiah 43:1) October 2015 
