November 2015
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
Remembrance Day
Each year on November 11th, Canadians all across the country pause to remember the men and women
who gave their lives in war or who are currently serving in peacekeeping missions around the world.
November 11th was selected as the day to remember our war dead because the World War One
Armistice was signed on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 in the war that was
supposed to end all wars. Our students will be remembering those that have made sacrifices for our freedom at a
special assembly on Wednesday November 11, 2015 at 10:30 a.m.
Celebrating our Faith
On Wednesday November 18th, 2015, our students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will have the opportunity to
receive Reconciliation.
On Thursday December 17th, 2015 @ 10:00 a.m., our school will be celebrating mass as a faith community
during the Advent season. We cordially extend an invitation to parents/guardians to join us.
We are always most thankful to Father Grima for his constant support of our students’ faith formation journey.
Virtue Corner
Our Virtue for the month of November is Conscience. God helps us to choose to be good people.
Conscience is the voice of God within us. As you develop your conscience, you will learn to make
decisions that will make sure you will always have love in your life. Our conscience reminds us
how to act towards other people and how to be a good friend. Sometimes it is hard for us to do
the right thing, but we must always remember that the right thing to do is not always the easy
thing to do.

Welcome
We are excited to welcome new staff members to our school.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Canal, who joins St. John Fisher School as
our new part-time secretary. We would also like to welcome our new planning time teacher,
Mrs. Vancardo, who is working in our Kindergarten classrooms. And finally, we are pleased to
welcome Ms. Pavao back to our school who has taken over for Mrs. Dinucci in our Grade 3
classroom. We would like to take an opportunity to thank Mrs. DiNucci for all her contributions and dedication to
our school over the last several years and wish her all the best at her new school.
Visitors In The School
In order to maintain a safe school environment for your child, please remember that if you are visiting
our school, you MUST sign in at the front office and obtain a Visitor’s Pass to identify yourself as a
visitor. Teachers will be questioning adults on school property without proper identification. If you are picking up
your child, please send a note to your child’s teacher or notify our office to inform us of this arrangement. If you are
picking up your child after school, we ask that you use the Kiss’n’Ride laneway. We thank you for adhering to this
policy.

Dressing Appropriately for the Weather
Now that the colder weather is almost upon us we respectfully remind you to ensure that your
children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities. When weather conditions are severe we may reduce the outdoor play time, or have indoor recess entirely, but fresh
air and exercise are vital components for successful learning, so we will endeavour to have children play outside whenever possible. Help your children by having them come to school appropriately dressed with scarves, hats and mittens. For health and safety reasons and to help keep the
school clean, we would ask that students have shoes to be worn indoors that are different from those worn outdoors.
St. John Fisher Breakfast Program
Research shows that starting the day off with nutritious food contributes to improved learning. As part
of our “Healthy Schools Initiatives”, our school is resuming our Breakfast Program.
The Breakfast Program has begun running from 8:15-8:30 a.m. from Monday to Friday on days when
school is in session. Participating students enter through the front and go to the staff room to eat. A
variety of foods are being served during the week such as yogurt, fresh fruit, cereal, milk, cheese, toast,
pancakes, etc. We are grateful to the many parent and staff volunteers who give of their time to make this
program possible.
Attendance and Punctuality
We ask that parents/guardians continue to support their children during their morning routines so
that they can arrive to school on time. This ensures that your child learns an essential life skill, participates in the entire school day , and that disruptions to the learning environment are minimal. PARENTS, please note, if you are late dropping off your children, please bring them to the front doors
so that we can mark their attendance. Please do not go to the back doors of the school.
