March 31, 2015 Volume 4, No. 27 OSU CASE COMPETITION The Ohio State University Health Administration program is sponsoring its third annual “Case Competition” for first-year MHSA students. This is scheduled for next week, Friday, April 10, 2015 in Columbus OH. As many of you know, a case competition is a unique experience that allows a team of students to “show their skills” at presenting a case to a panel of judges. The competition part comes in the fact that students from different schools go head-to-head to see which teams present the best and most creative overall solution to the case assigned. For the students, it’s a chance to show how they can draw from the various MHSA courses, e.g. finance, quant, management, planning, etc. For the schools, it’s a chance to see how our students’ skills and learning compare to other programs. Because OSU is sponsoring this competition, we at Xavier encourage our students participate. Xavier and OSU are the only CAHME-accredited MHSA programs in Ohio; we not only want to support this OSU effort but also want to give our students the chance to participate in a geographically close-by event. A school can send only two teams of three first-year students each. The coach needs to be a second-year student and not a faculty member. Based on fall semester 2014 grades and overall performance, including oral presenting, creative thinking, clarity of speech and thought, overall readiness, etc., the faculty and I selected the following first-year students to participate: XAVIER UNIVERSITY MHSA CASE COMPETITION TEAMS for the OSU Event on April 10, 2015: ALL FOR ONE Team ONE FOR ALL Team Team Members Patrick Adams ‘17M Tara Haskell ‘17M Eric Morris ‘17M James Horne ‘17M Yogita Pradhan ‘17M Andrew Rehagen ‘17M Team Alternates Michael Cirino ‘17M Sadath Hussain ‘17M D’Artagnan Sophia Boxold ‘16M Andrew Jackson ‘16M (2nd Year Coach) Sophia Boxold and Andrew Jackson were on our Xavier teams last year and so have been generously sharing their wisdom and experience with these first-year students. Sophia, Andrew, and the team members have been “training” since early in the spring 2015 semester. I’m sure you join me in offering well-wishes to these students as they go to OSU in two weeks. XAVIER ETIQUETTE DINNER FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS Thanks to the special efforts and initiative of Megan Trimbach ‘16M who is also president of Xavier’s Graduate Student Association, Xavier held an Etiquette Dinner open to all graduate students on Friday, February 20, 2015. This was the first time that the dinner was open only to graduate students; in the past it was an undergraduate/graduate student event and our thenfirst year class of 2016 attended in fall 2013. Because this was such a valuable experience for her class, Megan made sure that the dinner was held again so that the first year MHSA class of 2017 also had this learning opportunity. Special thanks to alumni Pamela Coyle-Toerner ‘88M and Leslie Burford ’90 who participated with other graduate program alumni as “table professionals” to guide the networking conversation and model the etiquette dinner concepts.
