NATIONAL RESEARCH EXPLAINED
Our first-year MHSA students and faculty along with Nursing students and faculty learned about the NHANES (National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) Study that is going on in Hamilton County. On Thursday, April 4, 2013, Vicki L.
Burt, ScM, RN, Chief, Planning Branch, NHANES, for Health Statistics at CDC gave introductory presentations in Kelly
Auditorium about the study.
The NHANES is administered annually in the United States in various locations. This year, Xavier University was chosen
as one of the 15 sites to host the study. NHANES operates from modular units located on the east side of campus. HSA
faculty member, Dr. Eddie Hooker, associate professor, was instrumental in having NHANES select Xavier.
The survey examines a nationally representative sample of about 5,000 persons each year. These persons are located in
communities across the country, and 15 locations are visited each year. The NHANES interview includes demographic,
socioeconomic, dietary, and health-related questions and includes physical exam elements. Findings from this survey are
used to determine the prevalence of major diseases and risk factors for diseases, nutritional status and its association
with health promotion and disease prevention, and also provide the basis for national standards for such measurements
as height, weight, and blood pressure.
