FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP
Congratulations to HSA core faculty member Eddie Hooker, MD, DrPH, whose collaborative article was published in the
CLINICAL GERONTOLOGIST: THE JOURNAL OF AGING AND MENTAL HEALTH, Vol. 34, September 2011, p. 399-412, entitled,
“Maximizing the Impact of a Symposium to Facilitate Change in Student Attitudes About Interdisciplinary Teamwork”. This was a
collaborative effort among several faculty within CSSHE (College of Social Science, Health and Education) including Renee
Zucchero, PhD, Psychology: Barbara Harland, MSN, Med, RN, CNL (Nursing); Shelagh Larkin, MSW (Social Work); and Joan
Tunningley, Med, OTR/L (Occupational Therapy) and Eddie Hooker, MD, DrPH (Health Administration). The article explained that
interdisciplinary education for healthcare students can have a positive effect on them and a positive application in the field.
Here’s an added message from Dr. Hooker dated 10/20/11: I wanted to let you know that the hard work by my students and
the press that was given to the community health assessment may already be having an effect. One of the huge problems with
the epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases in Ohio is the state law that prohibits physicians from giving a patient drugs for
their partner unless they personally examine them. Obviously, if you don't treat the partner, the patient gets re-infected. I
pointed this out in multiple media interviews, and now the state board of medicine is going to consider revising the state code to
allow for partner therapy. Partner therapy, without personally examining the patient, is recommended by the CDC and is law in
many other states. This is fantastic news. I will be in Columbus on November 18th to help push this forward. This is just another
example of Xavier making a difference in the community!
ALUM-N-I-C-E
Our 1,408 Alumni are the pride and joy of Xavier and our HSA Department. We applaud your achievements and commitment to
the highest quests in health services administration, we hold you up as models for our students to emulate, and we happily claim
you as “ours”. We also thank you, Alumni, for your ongoing interest in and support of the Department, including being
preceptors for our administrative residents as well as assisting our students in their careers. Because I believe that our Xavier
HSA Department is a community – students, faculty, staff, Alumni, preceptors, Advisory Board Members, program partners, and
donors, it’s important to keep the fires of belonging and family-feelings lit. This section, called “AlumNice”, celebrates news about
several of our Alumni. (And please email in your news so we can celebrate you, too!)
• Rob Wolterman, MHA ‘99, and Laura Leighton, MHSA ’11, made a presentation to our second-year students on
September 13, 2011 about the Ochsner Health System’s Administrative Fellowship.
• David Baytos, MHA ’77, Senior Vice President and CEO for Mississippi and International Healthcare Services, is overseeing a
new $137M 100-bed hospital for Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare in DeSoto, MS.
• Chuck Conole, MBA/HHSA ’67, CEO of E. J. Noble Hospital in Syracuse, NY is looking to “pass the torch”, so a fellow Xavier
alum interested in the CEO opportunity of a small, sole community hospital setting (90 beds – 47 acute and 40 LTC plus
several primary care clinics) may be drawn to contact Chuck: 315-287-1000, X231 or cconole@ejnoble.org
• Thomas F. Zenty III, ’MHA 80, is on MODERN HEALTHCARE’s list of “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” for 2011.
• Larry Kloess, MHA ’83 will retire as President of HCA TriStar Division in Nashville on 12/31/11 after 28 years. Larry has
been a preceptor for our administrative residents.
• On a bittersweet note, Mary Santarsiero MHA ’70 passed away in May 2011 but she named our HSA Program in her will.
The proceeds are to go toward financial assistance to HSA students.
