ST. JEAN BRÉBEUF CATHOLIC SCHOOL 63 Glenforest Rd. Brampton, Ont. L6S 1L8 Phone (905) 791-8529 January 2016 New Year’s Prayer God is in the stars and in the stables. Like the wise men in the gospel story, our journey has brought us once again into the light and warmth of your presence. We bring gifts, as they did, but in the light of your overwhelming generosity, they seem not more than tokens. Remind us of the power that you can infuse in the gifts we offer with loving hearts, and let us be changed by the giving, even as the wise men were changed. We pray it in the name of Christ, the Prince of Peace. Principal’s Message I’d like to extend a heart felt Happy New Year to this great community that is St. Jean Brébeuf. It is hoped that each of you enjoyed a break from the rush and bustle of work and school life while reconnecting with friends and family. It is my wish that our families realize good health and happiness in 2016. May we all be blessed with a continued partnership that is focused on meeting the emotional, spiritual, physical and academic needs of the children that walk through these doors each and every day. P. A. DAY MONDAY, JANUARY 18TH This day is dedicated to evaluation of pupil progress and report card preparation. There will be no classes for students on this day. PLEASE NOTE: Wed., Feb. 3 is NOT a P.A. Day, as indicated in the student agendas. The P.A day for interviews is Fri. Feb. 5, 2016. FAX (905) 791-6468 Newsletter #5 Principal Michael Araman Secretary This month we are celebrating the virtue of Self-Control. God has given us the ability to choose. We are able to control how we react to what happens around us. Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that we will regret. It also helps us to resist the temptation to do something that will harm ourselves or others. Each time you exercise self-control you grow stronger in the Lord and invite peace to settle over your life as you avoid any guilt you may feel from having made a poor decision. There were many food items donated for the Knights Table. Our lobby was filled!!. Through your generous support we raised approximately $300 in Candygram sales. All proceeds will be sent to St. Anthony’s Parish Share Life. Acts 20:35 “ In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ In order to ensure the safety of all students, St. Jean Brébeuf has a strict rule of forbidding the throwing of snowballs and ice, kicking snow at others and destroying other students’ ice creations. These activities therefore are not permitted in the schoolyard. Every student has been made aware of the importance of this rule. A snowball, which hits another student can result in a serious injury. In an active schoolyard, sliding and tunnelling in the snow can be fun; however, a child could still get hurt. Therefore, we are asking students to refrain from sliding on ice patches and to stay off snow piles made by the snowploughs. We encourage our students to constructively use the snow that winter brings us, to build snow people, forts, sculptures, etc. and to play cooperatively with others. Please assist us by reviewing with your child the dangers of throwing snowballs and the importance of preventing injury to other children. This will help to make our school yard a safe place for all our students during the winter. Also, students are reminded to dress appropriately for 40 minutes of outdoor recess, with a warm coat, mitts, hat and boots. Only during extreme cold is outdoor recess cancelled or shortened. All students must have indoor shoes to wear. If students are not well enough to go out for recess they should remain at home, as there is no supervision of students inside during recess time. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! We wish to express our gratitude to the many parents and members of our school community who have given generously of their time, energy and talents, to benefit the students of St. Jean Brébeuf Catholic School. Your contributions have made a positive difference. If you are interested and available to contribute to our school by volunteering, please contact the school. All volunteers in our school who wish to participate in school activities, including accompanying classes on school trips, must provide a Criminal Reference Check. Please see the office as soon as possible to receive paperwork in order to receive the reference check for free. The reference check MUST be completed before you can volunteer in the school. Newsletter #5 Bullying Prevention Education January’s Theme is: CONFLICT IS INEVITABLE. BULLYING IS NOT. The key message in January is “conflict is inevitable, bullying is not”. Students need to learn to differentiate bullying from the daily conflict situations they face. Everyone faces conflict in daily life and through it can learn to negotiate and build relationships. Bullying is a form of violence that leaves no room for negotiation and seeks to tear others down rather than build relationships. Tips for Parents: Help your children apply the definition of bullying to determine if a situation is bullying or conflict and ensure you do too. Page 3 BUS CANCELLATIONS/SCHOOL CLOSING DUE TO BAD WEATHER During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio and television stations or check Dufferin-Peel website www.dpcdsb.org or GeoQuery website www.stopr.ca Does one person have more power than the other? Is the behaviour intentional / on purpose? Does it keep happening?
