February Prayer
Principal
Michael Araman
God of the winter sky,
Fill the night with stars,
For I need to lift my eyes
And raise my weary soul
Secretary
From shadows and short days,
Marilyn Kelly-Bernard
From dreary tasks and unending lists.
Shine bright lights into the darkness
And remind me
That new life and dormant seeds
Gather strength in the depths of the earth.
Open me to the newness inside me
Waiting to be born.
Amen
FAMILY DAY
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15TH
The school will be closed to celebrate Family
Day. There will be no classes on this day.
ADDITIONAL P.A. DAY
This month we will celebrate the virtue of
respect.
As brothers and sisters who share one
Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God.
We all deserve to be shown courtesy,
consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness, which are different ways of saying
respect.
Respect should come first and foremost
from ourselves. We have to respect our
selves and then we will be able to respect
others. We should also be able to expect
to be treated with respect by everyone we
meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus.

BULLYING PREVENTION
February – Telling an Adult about Bullying is Not Tattling
This month we focus on the difference between tattling and telling. In dealing with bullying situations, students are
encouraged to use the strategy, ‘telling an adult’. Although this sounds simple and logical, there are many difficulties and roadblocks associated with this strategy. Younger children struggle to understand the difference between
telling and tattling, while older children struggle with their desire to deal with situations independently. The goal of
telling an adult is to keep children safe.
Tattling/ratting is defined as telling in order to get someone into trouble, or telling when there is no one being
hurt and no rule being broken that could result in a dangerous situation.
Telling is defined as reporting unsafe behaviours to an adult in order to get help for someone – to get someone
out of trouble.
Tips for parents:

use incidences where one child is telling you about sibling behaviour to help children identify whether they are
tattling or telling

practice with your child how to ‘tell an adult’ about bullying (what happened, how they feel, what help they
desire)

develop awareness of the ‘reasons’ children state for not reporting bullying to adults

LIBRARY
February is a busy month in the library. Our students are going to be involved in the Forest of Reading
program which brings an excellent selection of Canadian children’s books to the attention of Ontario
children. Students from JK to grade 3 are reading Blue Spruce selections, These book selections focus
on current Canadian fiction and non-fiction appropriate to the student’s ages. The program rewards
them by making them judges in a province wide event. In late April, our groups will be participating with over 80,000
children across the province in voting for their favourite book.
As well, February is Black History month. Students will be invited to look at various books related to the experiences
and achievements of black men and women.
Please remind your child to take good care of their library book. It is strongly recommended to use a heavy plastic bag
inside the back pack when taking library books home and returning them back to school on their library day. Students
should not be leaving library books in their back packs and they are encouraged to keep them in a safe place at home
to enjoy. Damaged books are costly to replace.
FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
Our School Council has been hard at work preparing and organizing two opportunities to raise
funds for the school. The first is the easiest of all and requires very little effort on your part. If
you order pizza from Dominoes Pizza, the school will receive 10% of the total cost of your order
anytime between February 5th and March 19th. You can order as frequently as you wish. Simply
order online and enter the school code (SJBSS001). Keep us in mind for your Super Bowl parties!
This year, the school council decided to try Purdy’s Chocolates. Orders will
be sent home on Thursday, February 4th with delivery scheduled for March
23rd—just in time for Easter. A brochure will be included to support the order form. However, please note that not all items will be offered for sale
due to the ingredients contained in them.
Further details will be sent home with students soon.
