Dear God,
You have done such a marvelous job of
creating us and the world around us.
You have placed this creation, including all
the people we meet, in our care.
CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
We come to you now asking for the grace
and strength to love.
Opening Doors of Mercy
We want to love like Jesus loved -- without
holding back; without wondering what’s in it
for me; so that everyone around us will
know what your love looks like.
May we find the courage to forget ourselves on purpose for the good of your people.
We ask this in name of Jesus, our brother,
who lived to show us your way.
Amen.
May 1-6 2016
Catholic Education Week begins on a
Sunday to highlight the partnership that
remains the foundation of Catholic education between our Catholic schools and
local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education Week, we ask you to reflect
on the significance of Catholic education’s
presence and contribution in our Church,
and in our society. We invite all members
of our community, to participate in the celebrations and activities that will mark the
celebration of Catholic Education Week
2016 in our schools.
Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week 2016 May 2ndto 6th,
in ways that are appropriate to our students’ ages.

First Holy Communion will be celebrated on Sunday,
April 10th, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Church for those families that
have registered their child. We are celebrating with St. Marguerite Bourgeoys
School. Therefore seating and parking

ARE YOU PLANNING TO MOVE?
We are in the process of planning
staffing and organizing classes for
the 2016-2017 school year. If you
are planning to move out of the St.
Jean Brébeuf School area, or are
simply changing addresses within
our boundaries, please let the office
know as soon as possible.
Also, it is imperative that you keep us informed about
changes in your place of work, phone numbers and in
daycare arrangements. In the event of an emergency,
our records need to be up-to-date so that we are able to
contact you. Please contact the office when there are
changes in this information. Thank you for your cooperation.
DANCE CLASSES
We are pleased to again have Burlington
Dance conducting dance instruction for all
grades. Students will be learning a combination of Hip Hop, Latin and line dancing beginning
March 29th until April 28th. We will have
2 performances on May 5th, during
Catholic Education Week, for parents
to attend.
EQAO
The administration of Grade 3 and 6 Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics 2015-2016 will be taking
place at St Jean Brébeuf later in the year. Planning and
support for the students is ongoing throughout the year to
best prepare each student for the assessment. The administration of the grades 3 and 6 assessment will
take place from May 25th to June 8th.
Please assist us in supporting your child by not booking
activities or appointments on these days to allow them to
benefit from the instructions provided and the delivery of
the assessment. Detailed schedules will be sent home in
May.
Spring/Summer Weather-Spring/Summer Clothing!
As we all know, the weather during the months of spring
can vary greatly and change suddenly as witnessed in
the last couple of weeks! It is very important for students
to be prepared each day and from day to day for temperatures ranging from very cold to very warm. In addition,
the possibility of rain (hopefully not snow) is very real.
We ask that you monitor your child’s clothing so that they
can enjoy outdoor time regardless of weather conditions.
We also ask that you ensure your children dress modestly on very warm days. Please follow these guidelines:

shorts should be no shorter than mid thigh

halter tops, belly tops or tank tops are not to be worn
at all.

Shirt and t-shirt sleeves must cover the shoulder as
well as the top of the pants/shorts

Students may be asked to change or parents may be
called to provide alternate wear if needed. Your cooperation is appreciated.
WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN NIGHT
On Thursday, May 12th,
at 6:30 p.m. we will be
hosting a Welcome to
Kindergarten evening
for those students and
their parents who will
be starting school for the first time in September 2016.
Children and their parents will be involved
in activities that promote student school
readiness. At the end of the evening, each
child will take home a bag of materials to
promote readiness activities at home.
These bags are provided in conjunction
with The Learning Partnership.
St. Jean Brébeuf celebrated Earth Hour on Friday, March
11th by turning off unnecessary lights and electronics between 11:00 am to 1:00 p.m. to show that we care for the
Earth.
Our next school stewardship project will be for
Earth Day by participating in Brampton’s
‘Spring Clean Up’ on April 28th.

BULLYING PREVENTION EDUCATION
VIRTUE OF LOVE
APRIL’S THEME:
This month we celebrate the virtue of love. God has given us many guidelines and examples of how to live our
lives. He sent his Son Jesus to make sure that we could
see what life could be like. Jesus made one lesson clear
above all other lessons – the lesson to love. Love is not
about us – it is about forgetting ourselves and looking out
for the good of the other. That’s what Jesus did – he forgot about himself on purpose. He chose to give up his life
for the good of others – us!
IF YOU’RE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOU’RE
PART OF THE PROBLEM
In April the focus is on the role of the bystander/witness
in bullying situations. Research shows that bystanders
make or break bullying episodes – they hold the power to
stop bullying. They provide the audience for students
engaged in bullying behaviours. Therefore, the theme for
this month is ‘If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part
of the problem’. Every child should feel they have the
power to prevent and safely help in bullying situations.
Tips for parents:

encourage your children to show empathy for others
who are bullied (befriend them, include them)

teach your children to intervene appropriately by asking the person bullying to stop, take the person bullied away to play with or walk away and tell an adult

role model being ‘part of the solution’ when you
encounter difficult situations in your life
D.O GIBSON RAPS AGAINST BULLYING AT SJB
Duane Gibson aka D.O. is a Guinness World Record
setting rapper, author, and University graduate who recently performed at St. Jean Brébeuf. Mr. Gibson performed to the grades 1 to 8 student body, and then conducted a more intimate seminar with some of our intermediate students. Gibson has spoken at more than 500
schools focusing on anti-bullying, literacy and character
education. D.O. stands for “Defy the Odds.” As a child
growing up in small towns across Canada, no one expected a young Duane Gibson to become a rap star.
D.O.’s message to youth is that setting goals and persevering is the key to success. Growing up in communities
where he was the only child of colour, D.O. learned at an
early age what it is like to be different from the crowd. He
confronted bullies, dealt with racism, and overcame shyness by believing in himself and following through on his
goals. D.O.’s message to youth is that “Can’t nobody
hold you down!” We appreciated his connection to students and his ability to bring the same messages to our
students from a personal perspective.
FIRE AND LOCKDOWN DRILLS
As part of DPCDSB’s safety protocol, every school is
required to hold three fire drills and one lockdown drill
each term in order to familiarize students with procedures to follow in the case of emergency. Our students
have demonstrated excellent skill during these practices.
Becoming a truly loving person is challenging. It takes
prayer and concentration to get used to making little sacrifices for the good of others. Making little sacrifices on
purpose so that others will have a bit of food, a bit of
shelter, a bit of peace, a bit of quiet, a bit of fun, a bit of
friendship.
Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at
showing love to everyone we meet.
A Loving Person…
Wants the best for others
Is willing to make sacrifices for the good of others
Learns from the heroic lives of saints & holy people
Knows that we are all lovable
Prays for others

CLASS LISTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2016
We will begin work on next year’s class lists in June. If
your child(ren) will be returning to St. Jean Brébeuf School
and there are particular learning needs that you feel we
should consider when making up classes, please put this
in writing to the principal by April 30th. Only educational
reasons will be considered in this process. Please do not
make requests for specific teachers. If your family will be
moving from our school area, please let the office
know as soon as possible.
