ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL
God our Father, your Son Jesus gave up His life to free us from the power of sin
and death.
He showed us that the greatest love is in giving up one’s life for others.
We remember those who fought and died for our freedom. We ask you to bless
and console them together with their families.
Help us to understand the sacrifices they made in leaving their loved ones to face
the horrors of war. May we never forget their generosity.
May your Holy Spirit give us the courage to resist evil in all its forms and show us
how to be peacemakers through prayer and action, lest we forget those who
fought, suffered and died that we might have the freedom and peace we enjoy today.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: CONSCIENCE
This month we will celebrate the virtue of conscience. A person of conscience allows
prayer and scripture to influence him / her. A person of conscience:

Chooses to do the right thing and feels good about it

Can see how his/her actions may hurt others

Says sorry and tries to make up for mistakes

Keeps promises
Our next Virtues assembly is scheduled for November 26th at 1:35 p.m.

UPHOLDING THE CATHOLIC CODE OF CONDUCT
The Philosophy of Progressive Discipline
Central to the practice of progressive discipline is a caring community that collaborates, and consults in crafting
a comprehensive system of supports that ensures the school’s collective commitment to uphold the standards
of the Catholic Code of Conduct. Progressive discipline exists at all times to support the growth of all students.
It includes a range of proactive strategies that foster Catholic community and aim to prevent problems before
they occur. At the school level, progressive discipline includes classroom management strategies and schoolwide programs that teach pro-social skills, provide support for vulnerable students, promote virtue formation
and foster the Catholic values that are implicit in the Catholic Code of Conduct. If there are bullying or other issues that occur with your child, please contact your child’s teacher immediately so we can
deal with the issue. Thank you.

APPROPRIATE DRESS - COLD
WEATHER
The days are getting colder and pretty soon winter will arrive. We ask that students dress appropriately; i.e. coats, gloves, mitts, boots etc. If
they are dressed warmly, they are better prepared to participate in outdoor activities during
recess and noon hour. Please do not send students who are ill to school. We do not have the
capacity to keep students in at recesses. If your
child comes to school they are expected to go
outside for recess unless indoor recess has
been called.
LUNCH DELIVERIES
When delivering your child’s lunch to school,
please advise your child in advance that you will
be doing so and write his/her first and last name
and the teacher’s full name on the bag. We ask
for all parents to leave the lunch on the lunch
table. Please deliver your child’s lunch by 11:40
as they get delivered at 11:45. A reminder that
FAST FOOD lunches are NOT compliant with
our Anaphylaxis Board policy.
CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to the following students who competed in the board finals for Cross Country. Our top
placements were in grade 6 with Matthew S. placing 15th and Sierra R. placing 1st.
All of our students represented SJB with lots of enthusiasm and hard work.

REMEMBRANCE DAY LITURGY
Twelve Steps To Increase Your Child’s Math
Achievement And
Make Math Fun!!!
1. Never praise children by telling them they are “smart.”
Remembrance Day this year is Wednesday,
November 11. Our school memorial service
will be conducted in the school on that day at
10:45 a.m. There will only be one liturgy
on this day. Please join us in remembering
those who have made a difference.
HEAD INJURY DURING SCHOOL POLICY
When a student receives an injury/bump to the head
(however minor), it is a Board Policy that we inform
parents. A call will be made to one of the contacts.
This is precautionary only and we ask that you check
your child when they get home for any signs of a
concussion or illness.
2. Never share stories of math failure or dislikes.
3. Always praise mistakes and say that you are pleased your
child is making them.
4. Encourage children to work on problems that are challenging for them, so they can make mistakes.
5. When you help your children, do not lead them through work
step by step, as this takes away important learning opportunities for them.
6. Encourage drawing out their answers with pictures, numbers, and words whenever you can.
7. Encourage students to make sense of math at all times.
8. Encourage students to think flexibly about numbers.
HEAD INJURY OR CONCUSSION OUTSIDE
OF SCHOOL
Parents/guardians are required to inform school administration in the event of any serious injury to the
head or concussion sustained outside of school. Parents/guardians will then be provided with a form that
ensures the students have been seen by a doctor.
Once this form is completed, the student will then be
able to return to school. This may require the development of a plan to facilitate returning to the classroom. Thank you for your cooperation.
9. Never time children or encourage faster work.
10. When children answer questions and get them wrong, try
and find logic in their answers.
11. Give children math puzzles.
12. Play games!!

ATTENDANCE
Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu Season
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in
ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school
communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene
and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an
ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu
prevention with students and staff. Many resources are
utilized from our regional health units.
A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be
contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are
transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December
through February, but can start as early as October.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin
Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their
websites. As always, children who are unwell, should be
kept at home.
Flu Clinics
Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites, are
the schedules of local Flu Clinics.
For more information, visit the health unit websites:
The Education Act states that it is mandatory for all students, between the ages of six years and eighteen years,
to attend school every day. School Social Workers are
mandated to intervene with students and their families
whenever students are identified as truant.
Some reasons why students do not attend:
Mental health problems:
Peer difficulties
Academic struggles
Boredom
Lacking motivation
Parent/child conflict
Family issues
Some reasons why students should attend school:
Academic success
Increase ability to gain employment
Develop social skills
Keep out of trouble in the community
Learn social norms
Increase self-esteem
Develop routines

school. Students are kindly asked to change into their indoor shoes when in the building. This will assist in keeping
our classrooms clean and dry. Wet floors can cause slips
and falls. Also, in the event of a fire alarm, students will
not be able to stop to put their boots on, so it is important
for students to wear shoes at all times.

Halloween Fundraiser a Success!
Students of St. John the Baptist helped raise money for
Project Hope. Successfully, the students came together as
a school community and donated $2.00 at the Halloween
Dance. As a school, we managed to raise $500.00 for this
worthy cause to help support the refugee crisis.
This initiative as Cardinal Collins said,"Sparks a culture of
care, love and mercy in our community. To welcome the
stranger, clothe the naked and feed the poor is at the
heart of our faith. Let us put these words into action."
Thank you SJB students for your generous donation!
Thank you to Pierro Carbone at Garden Foods in Bolton
who donated pumpkins for our students to decorate. Our
student DJ's rocked the house at our dance and prizes
were awarded for best costume. Way to show your school
spirit SJB!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------“WEDNESDAY’S” WALK TO SCHOOL”
We are encouraging all students to walk to school on
“Wednesday’s” as part of our Healthy Schools initiative!
Walk, bike, skip or hop to school…but don’t drive!
Parking for Parents/Visitors
A reminder to our parents and visitors that parking is available at the front and side lot (by the park) of the school.
Please respect our “Staff Only” parking lot at the side of the
building and please DO NOT park in this lot. Also, in the
interest of student safety we do not want cars coming and
going throughout the day through this lot as it is parallel to
our crosswalk where our students cross to get to school.
Please do not remove the pylons that are set out at
the end of the day. They are there for student safety.
Thank you.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
St. John the Baptist will once again be participating in Operation Christmas Child. Please begin collecting
items to fill the shoeboxes. Our students will be delivering the shoeboxes on December 4th. More information to follow.
