SUSTAINABILITY EMPHASIS Students seeking a BIS degree with a Sustainability Emphasis gain exposure to a diverse selection of courses in related fields. Students interested in this program will have a desire to make positive change in society and communities, whether that change emphasizes environment, society, or economy. Courses will emphasize inquirybased, problem-solving, interdisciplinary systems approaches and critical thinking. Sustainability education promotes the following underlying values: Respect for the dignity and human rights of all people throughout the world and a commitment to social and economic justice for all. Respect for the human rights of future generations and a commitment to intergenerational responsibility. Respect and care for the greater community of life in all its diversity, which involves the protection and restoration of the Earth’s ecosystems. Respect for cultural diversity and a commitment to build locally and globally a culture of tolerance, nonviolence and peace. Suitable careers might be in sustainability education for a corporation, community group or municipality; nonprofit environmental or social/economic justice work; “green products” testing and marketing; urban and regional planning; community development; or other. Courses selected from the following list may be used in this area of emphasis. Other courses may be considered on a course-by-course basis. Be aware that some courses have prerequisites or are restricted. Students are encouraged to take at least one course in Categories A, B, and C.
