ALGEBRA 2 6.0
TEST – MONDAY 10-01-15
CHAPTER 1
NO CALCULATORS
You must be able to do the following for this assessment:
 Factor trinomials

Factor polynomials by grouping (as in the puzzle you did)

Square binomials

Write linear inequalities in interval notation

Given a linear equation in one variable, solve for the variable.

Given a linear equation with multiple variables (a literal equation), solve for the indicated
variable.

Given a linear inequality in one variable, solve for the variable.

Given a compound inequality (one with the word AND or OR) solve the inequality. Write the
solution in interval notation and graph the solution on a number line.

Given an absolute value equation or inequality with the variable appearing in the absolute
value only, isolate the absolute value, if necessary, and solve geometrically. That is, find
the solution using the definition of absolute value as the distance between two points on the
number line. You MUST show work on a number line.

Given the graph of the solution of an absolute value equation or inequality, determine the
absolute value equation or inequality.

Given an absolute value expression, rewrite it in piecewise form.

Given an absolute value equation or inequality with the variable appearing on BOTH sides,
isolate the absolute value, if necessary, and solve algebraically. That is,
 rewrite the absolute value in piecewise form,
 using the information from the piecewise form, rewrite the equation or
inequality, showing two cases without absolute values, separated by OR.
 solve each case separately
 give the final solution
Remember, these equations and inequalities can NOT be solved geometrically.

Translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions, equations or inequalities, and vice
versa (“word problems”)
