WELCOME TO AP ART HISTORY AT NORTH PENN HIGH SCHOOL
Instructor: Mr. Werner - wernermj@npenn.org
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This year-long Advanced Placement course provides high achieving students with a learning experience equivalent to a college level
introductory art history survey course. The course involves critical thinking and should develop an understanding and knowledge of
diverse historical and cultural context of architecture, sculpture, painting and other media. In the course, students examine and
critically analyze major forms of artistic expression from the past and present. While visual analysis is a fundamental tool of the art
historian, art history emphasizes understanding how and why the works of art function in context, considering such issues as
patronage, gender, and the functions and effects of works of art. THIS IS NOT A STUDIO COURSE.
NOTE TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
Students entering the AP Art History program are required to complete the following reading and writing assignments during the 2015
summer. The summer assignments and readings will be submitted on the first day of class. Failure to complete the required reading
by the first day of school 2015-2016 will result in an “F” grade and 0 points for the summer reading and research assignments.
All students need a copy of the textbook Gardners Art Through the Ages, 13th Ed. which will be available for pick-up from K-43 on
June 13, 15, or 16 at 2:30 PM. This book retails for over $150.00 and must be returned at the end of the 2015-2016 school year in
perfect condition.
STUDENTS: Please sign the below form indicating that you will sign out a textbook on June 13, 15, or 16 and assume all
responsibilities regarding that textbook and it’s return in perfect condition. If the book is lost, damaged, pages torn, highlighted, or
vandalized in any other way the student will be held responsible and charged a replacement fee that must be paid prior to graduation.
I have read the assignments and requirements and understand my responsibilities for the beginning of the school year in AP Art
History.

Book Descriptions:
A Short Guide To Writing About Art, 5TH edition or newer, Sylvan Barnet, is a guideline or manual for writing research papers. It is
highly recommended that you purchase it, as you will find it highly useful for all other classes involving writing about art even
through college. It is out of print , however. Check the used or student prices through a local college, Barnes and Noble, Amazon,
etc. if you would like to find a used copy for purchase. It is really cheap.
The Annotated Mona Lisa, is a condensed version of art history and its movements in a wonderfully written format. Many students
purchase it for their use during the school year. It is not required reading for the summer, however, it will come in handy for review
purposes as the course approaches the May test date.
LOOK! The Fundamentals of Art History introduces two basic art historical methods—formal analysis and contextual analysis—
revealing how to use these methods in class discussion and in written work. There is also valuable advice on writing art-history
papers, with real examples examined to highlight common strengths and weaknesses, and to show how to develop an argument
convincingly. To help students prepare for exams, D'Alleva explains the most effective methods of note-taking and outlines strategies
for reviewing images. Finally, D'Alleva provides a fascinating view of the study of art history within its historical context, which will
be particularly helpful for those considering majoring or minoring in this rewarding discipline.
