AMERICAN CULTURES
MR. BORGMANN
AMERICA in History 3 RESEARCH
I. Objectives of the American Cultures Research:
A. All students in America in History 3 are required to complete research. Research has
two primary objectives. The first is to allow the individual the opportunity to explore a
topic of American History that interests them. The second objective is to allow the
individual to work with the processes of standardized research methodology.
II. Basic Research Requirements:
A. The research must be on a teacher approved subject in American History
between the years 1945 (Causes of the Cold War) and 2016.The textbook
chapters include 13 through 22. Students may not change the assigned topic after
the research proposal has been submitted and accepted.
B. Research Requirements:







12 bullets / 24 point note sheet
Research proposal including thesis
Thesis/Quote-Paraphrase/Works Cited Sheet
Separate Properly formatted MLA work cited page
4 page / 1000 word 3 component research paper
Picture / Visual Analysis
Be on time to receive full credit
III. Research Methodology:
A. Recommended research procedure...
1. Select one primary topic of interest and two alternate topics. The
student should be prepared to work with any of the three topic areas selected.
(Ex: Cold War, Red Scare, Civil Rights.) Narrow the general topic into a specific
topic. ( Ex. Cold War.... Examples of American containment) Develop a question
that guides your
research. (Ex. How did the US contain communism in
Europe?)
2.
Use an encyclopedia or other quick reference to gain basic
understanding of the topic. While reading pay attention to people,
events and terms that may extend your formal research.
3. Find material on your topic from several sources and complete the
working bibliography. Begin sifting through the material for a deeper
understanding of the topic.
4. Develop a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a statement that predicts the
relationship between two or more variables. Most importantly the hypothesis is a
statement that can be proven by the data available. It is a tentative answer about
your subject. The hypothesis is very important as a departure point for your
investigations, (Ex. The US wanted to contain communism for national security
and so capitalism could prosper). Review the sample thesis statement provided
for you in this packet. (See section VIII.)
5. Develop analytical questions. Formulate questions that you want your
research to answer. Formulating these questions prior to intensive investigation
saves considerable time and gives direction to your research. Find materials to
answer the questions. Answers provide the body of your paper.
6. Evaluating sources. The researcher must try and remain objective in his
research. Avoid materials or sections of material with unfounded generalizations,
bias, prejudice, slanted viewpoints, vested interests, etc. Good sources are able to
stand the tests of critical examination and time. .Org cites are preferred over
.Com cites. Not everything on the internet is true.
7. Accept, reject or modify the thesis. Your research and answers to
analytical questions should result in conclusions from factual evidence which
result in your acceptance, rejection, or modification of your thesis.
IV. Sample thesis statements....
The formation of the Committee for Industrial Organization in 1935 served to broaden the basis of
social democracy in the United States and expanded workers’ rights.
House Un-American Activities Committee unsuccessfully (or successfully) searched for communists and
fascists within the government and elsewhere for thirty-seven years before quietly expiring.
The riots in Detroit and Harlem during World War II vividly demonstrated the contradiction between
the United States’ fight for freedom abroad and the denial of basic freedoms for African Americans at
home.
The integration of Central High School became the first major test of civil rights after the 1954
Supreme Court decision banning segregation.
For almost sixty years, racial segregation had been established by law in the United States; the
Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education changed race relations in the United States.
Jackie Robinson established himself as a major league baseball player and reinforced the hypocracy of
racism in the “land of the free.”
Immigration legislation in 1921 created a quota system that favored the nations of northern and
western Europe and put an end to the idea of the United States as a melting pot.
The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, giving women the right to vote, was the
culmination of several decades of struggle.
Ku Klux Klan violence against both blacks and whites in the name of racial and moral purity reached a
high between 1921 and 1924.
The United of Nations was created in the attempt to preserve international peace by means of
multicultural diplomacy and collective action against any state committing an act of aggression.
V. The Work Cited Page










All sources used in your research must be included in your works cited page.
The works cited page is a separate page.
Title the work cited page: Works Cited.
The title is centered and is one-inch form the top of the page.
Alphabetize the entries by the author's last name. If the author is unknown, list by the first
word in the title other than A, An, or The.
The first line of each entry is aligned with the left margin. If the entry is more than one line
indent five spaces from the left margin for each new line.
Double space the entire work cited page.
When information taken from a given source is limited, include the range of pages the
information was taken from.
Must Contain 4 (3+1) sources preferably all primary sources
General Reference, the textbook, and electronic (CD ROM) encyclopedias may not
be used in your final research. You may not use Wikipedia. They do not appear on
your note-cards / thesis-quote-paraphrase-works cited sheet and your final works
cited page.
