The period from Easter Sunday through Divine Mercy Sunday (the Sunday after Easter Sunday) is an especially joyful time. But the Easter season doesn't end there: Because Easter is the most important feast in the Catholic calendar – even more important than Christmas - the Easter season continues on for 50 days, through the Ascension of our Lord to Pentecost Sunday. So keep on celebrating and wishing your friends a happy Easter! God wants us to be kind to everyone we meet. Being kind is about more than just pretending to be nice. It is about helping and playing with others because we want to and not because we feel we have to. God helps us to be kind to our family and friends because by being kind we are able to see God in every one we meet. Kindness can only be seen through actions. It is not enough to say I will be kind or I am kind. We must show that we are kind by our words and our actions. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at showing kindness to everyone we meet. 940 North Park Drive A Kind Person . . . May God bless you during this Easter season and keep you throughout the year. May God give you all the faith it takes to make your dreams come true. May God’s love and wisdom always help to guide you on your way. Wishing you all a Blessed Easter! Page 2 Dear God, Our Catholic School Heritage continued . . . You have done such a marvelous job of creating us and the world around us. You have placed this creation, including all the people we meet in our care. We come to you now asking for the grace and strength to keep a sense of kindness. We hope that by recognizing and honouring this fruit of the Holy Spirit, we can contribute to making our school a safer, more caring, more inclusive community. May kindness, the fruit of your Spirit, help us to feel the courage to act on behalf of people around us who are in need. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our brother, who lived to show us your way. Amen Inclement and Cold Weather The weather conditions this winter have varied drastically. We ask that students and parents check weather reports on a regular basis and have the students dress appropriately; i.e. coats, gloves, mitts, boots etc. If they are dressed warmly, they are better prepared to participate in outdoor activities during recess and noon hour. Please be advised that students are kept indoors at recess during the winter ONLY when the weather conditions are extremely cold (when the wind chill equivalent temperature is minus 20 degrees Celsius as per school board policy). ECO Update Our National Sweater Day event was a great success. We saw so many wonderful and creative sweaters. Students learned about the benefits of lowering the thermostat by 2 degrees – families can save money on energy costs and according to WWF Canada it is estimated that across Canada that a two-degree-Celsius drop on building thermostats could reduce national greenhouse gas emissions by four megatons, which is equal to annual emissions from about 300,000 vehicles. So keep your thermostat down and show off those amazing sweaters! St. Anthony is on Twitter! For the latest news and information please follow us @AnthonyBrampton 13. How did Catholic high schools survive? Catholic parents and students paid tuition after grade ten. Parental groups raised money from draws, lotteries and school events. Parish priests contributed money from their Sunday collections. Many separate school boards, including Dufferin-Peel, opened intermediatedivision (i.e. grades seven-to-ten) schools. With the vital assistance of the religious teaching Orders (which taught in and administered grades eleven to thirteen for little or nothing), the diocese continued to operate private Catholic high schools and opened new ones. In fact, Philip Pocock, the Archbishop of Toronto, decided in 1971 to open one new Catholic high in the archdiocese every year until the government approved tax and grant funding for grades eleven to thirteen. 14. How was the Catholic high school issue resolved? In 1984, Premier William Davis, edified by the commitment to Catholic high schools of the Catholic community and convinced of the injustice of truncated separate schools, announced that the government would be completing the separate school system to the end of high school. The Supreme Court of Canada unanimously responded to a court challenge against the ensuing legislation by asserting that separate schools before Confederation were operating secondary school education with funding from taxes and government grants and, therefore, section 93(1) of the Canadian Constitution guaranteed the right of separate school boards to administer from junior kindergarten to the end of high school. After almost sixty years of financial sacrifice by the Catholic community, Catholic high schools once more became an equal partner in Ontario’s publicly funded school system. Special Occasions Parent(s)/Guardian(s) are asked not to send in food items for children to share for special occasions. If families would like to mark a special occasion perhaps consider donating a book to your child(ren)’s class that all students can enjoy. Any food items sent to school will be returned home. Thank you for your cooperation. Page 3 Healthy Eating: Smart Snacking Healthy Snack Ideas Growing children need more energy and nutrients than meals alone can supply. Think of snacks as "mini-meals" that include choices from one or more of the four food groups in Canada’s Food Guide. You can find healthy snack options throughout the grocery store. Remember: many of the foods advertised as "snacks" on TV - like chips, crackers and cookies - are often low in nutrients and high in fat and sugar. Bus Cancellations/School Closing Due to Bad Weather During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio stations: VIRGIN RADIO 99.9, CFTR 680, CFNY 102.1, EZ ROCK 97.3, CJCL 590, CHFI 98.1, CFRB 101, CHIN 100.7 FM/1540 AM, CJBC Z103.5, 93.1 FM, CITYPULSE, GLOBAL NEWS, CBC Snack Facts: You will hear one of four standard messages: Granola bars with chocolate, marshmallows or frosting are nutritionally more like chocolate bars. Choose granola bars with more fibre and less fat. Fruit snacks and fruit rolls are often high in sugar and low in nutrients, with little or no actual fruit. Read the ingredient list. Is the first ingredient real fruit, or sugar? Use the Nutrition Facts label to compare two similar products to help you make a decision. When to Snack Snacks offered midway between meals and at bedtime won't spoil your child's appetite. In fact, well-timed snacks help kids arrive at a meal feeling hungry, but not "starving". This is the best way for kids to eat well. For more information please visit www.peelregion.ca/ health/. Late Arrivals We continue to seek your support in encouraging your children to arrive to school on time. Students arriving late cause significant disruption to the classroom, and late students miss important instruction and learning time. Students should be in their designated area of the school yard no later than 8:25 so that they are ready to begin their day before the bell rings at 8:30. Thank you for your cooperation with this serious matter. MARCH BREAK There will be no school for students and staff from March 14th to 18th. We wish you all a safe and restful week. Classes will resume on Monday, March 21st. 1.”Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board buses serving St. Andrew, St. Benedict and St. Peter elementary schools and R.F. This message does not affect St. Anthony 3.”The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Peel District School Board Buses are cancelled”. ALL transportation services provided by the DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board have been cancelled for the entire day. 4.”The schools and offices of both the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Peel District School Board are closed” ALL schools are closed to students and staff. Pediculosis (Head Lice) Please check your children frequently and if you find them infested, we would ask that you let us know so we can advise you on the proper treatment. If a child does become infested, we will ask you to keep your child out of school until he/she has been treated with the correct medicated shampoo and his/her hair is entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs). When the child returns to school, the child needs to come to the office to be checked before going to class. If we all cooperate in these procedures we can address these occurrences in a sensitive manner. We may not entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them under control. Poetry Slam Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations (OCSGE elementary version) Congratulations to Christopher G. in Grade 5 and to Britannia F. in Grade 7 for winning St. Anthony School’s junior/intermediate poetry competition.
