God has given us the gift of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us out along the way. Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God – and so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ. As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all deserve to be shown courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness, which are different ways of saying respect. That respect should come first and foremost from ourselves. We have to respect ourselves and then be able to respect others. We should also be able to expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus. Black History Month Every year, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of black Canadians, past and present. We take this time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation we are today. During Black History Month, Canadians can gain insight into the experiences of black Canadians and the vital role this community has played throughout our shared history. (Source: Citizenship and Immigration Canada) This year in celebration of Black History Month: *The library will have on display a host of books related to Black History. *Daily announcements will include quotes and historical facts relating to Black History. *Students will participate in a variety of activities in their respective classrooms. *Students are encouraged to share stories and artifacts from home to enhance the knowledge and understanding of peers. Page 2 Lent Ontario Catholic School Graduate History tells us that Lent was not only to be a time of fasting and abstinence (meat was only to be eaten on Sundays) but all were directed to live the forty days in deep prayer, penitence and meditation. Expectations No parties were to be celebrated. No social activities were to be scheduled. For 40 days and nights, all but the most essential activity was to be stopped. Even little children were expected to make an effort not to enjoy life too much during Lent. Today Lent has still a strong spiritual meaning in that we are called to do penance, to repent for our sins, to change our hearts for the better, to think more to our spiritual life and to the eternal life. No question there is room, even today, for giving up certain things; but the most important work during Lent is, surely, to give up sin and to spend more time in prayer, in reading the Holy Scriptures, in becoming more Christ-like people; in other words, to die and to rise with Jesus to a new life - the life of grace. Let’s make Lent a time of quiet togetherness for family (turn off the T.V. a day a week, etc.), prayer, fasting, and good works. Lent is the season in which we prepare joyfully for the mystery of Easter with minds and hearts renewed. During Lent, the community of faith is blessed with a spirit of loving reverence for God and of willing service to neighbor. The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 18) and concludes before the evening mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. ECO Update Our National Sweater Day event was a great success. We saw so many wonderful and creative sweaters. Students learned about the benefits of lowering the thermostat by 2 degrees – families can save money on energy costs and according to WWF Canada it is estimated that across Canada that a two-degree-Celsius drop on building thermostats could reduce national greenhouse gas emissions by four megatons, which is equal to annual emissions from about 300,000 vehicles. So keep your thermostat down and show off those amazing sweaters! (elementary version of the OCSGE) I AM A TEAM PLAYER! I cooperate with others in all that I do I value everyone’s work I respect and listen to others I think of others before myself I follow rules of fair play I work hard in school so that I can build my community and make it a better place SAVE THE DATE Our virtue assembly will be held on February 16, 2016 @ 10:30 am in the school gym. School Lenten Mass will be held on February 19, 2016 @ 10:00 at St. Anthony Church Grade 7 and 8 Confirmation will be held on February 21, 2016 @ 2:30 at St. Anthony Church National Flag of Canada Day February 15th was declared National Flag of Canada Day in 1996. It marks the day in 1965 when our red and white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and indeed, hundreds of communities across Canada. Red and white were designated as Canada’s official colours in 1921 by His Majesty King George V. Our flag is a sign of freedom, democracy and human rights, and it reminds us of how truly fortunate we are as Canadians to live in this vast and beautiful land. February 15th is a perfect opportunity to celebrate our flag and what it stands for: a Dominion that is the envy of the world. Please visit http://www.canadianheritage.gc.ca for more information. Section 93(1) protects all the provisions of the last separate school legislation passed before Confederation, the Separate School (Scott) Act of 1863. Among others, the Act provided the following rights: to form a separate school board with five or more Catholic heads of family resident in a public school jurisdiction; to receive government grants equitable with those of the public school system; to receive equitable funding; to have separate school boundaries enlarged; to elect separate school trustees with all the powers of public school trustees. 11. Once section 93(1) was enacted, why did Ontario’s separate school supporters continue to suffer financial hardship? The Separate School (Scott) Act of 1863 did not anticipate the creation and/or growth of corporations and public utilities in Ontario, or the creation of public high schools. These two omissions caused over 100 years of financial hardship and inequity for separate school supporters. 12. Why did Catholic parents and students have to pay tuition to attend a Catholic high school after grade ten? In 1871 the Ontario government passed an Act to Improve the Common Schools and Grammar Schools of Ontario. This Act abolished common and grammar schools and created public schools for grades one to ten and high schools for grades nine to thirteen. The highest official with the Department of Education, Egerton Ryerson, commented that the 1871 Act did not affect separate schools. The separate school boards operating secondary school classes carried on, receiving funding from grants and taxes. However, early in the twentieth century the government passed legislation which forbade a separate school board from offering education beyond grade ten if its boundaries fell partially or fully within the boundaries of a high school district. Thus, all but one separate school board (in Dublin) lost their ability to receive tax or government grant financing beyond grade ten. Furthermore, if a separate school board chose to continue operating grades nine and ten, it received only elementary school grants for them. Pediculosis (Head Lice) Please check your children frequently and if you find them infested, we would ask that you let us know so we can advise you on the proper treatment. If a child does become infested, we will ask you to keep your child out of school until he/she has been treated with the correct medicated shampoo and his/her hair is entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs). When the child returns to school, the child needs to come to the office to be checked before going to class. If we all cooperate in these procedures we can address these occurrences in a sensitive manner. We may not entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them under control.
