Xaviour Trustee (905) 890-1221 St. Anthony of Padua Parish 940 North Park Drive We understand that both the world and its people are from God and so are essentially good. Furthermore, God has given us this Advent season year after year in order to focus our minds and our hearts on the good all around us. Year after year, we are reminded that God chose to send his Son to us because we are worth it. God knows how great we can be when we all come together. When we look at the world through the eyes of God we see it becoming more and more like the reign of God that Jesus describes. People of Hope . . . Brampton, Ontario (905) 793-8030 Father Joseph Pham Pastor Father Massillamani Zacharias Pastor Keep up a positive attitude Can bounce back from tough situations Set and stick to their goals See the good in others even when they make mistakes Work to include others Let others know that they are good people Advent has a two-fold nature: it prepares us for Christmas , when we recall Christ’s first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to his second coming at the end of the ages. Advent is a season of joyful expectation. During Advent, each Sunday’s gospel has a specific theme. The Old Testament readings, especially those taken from Isaiah, are prophecies about the Messiah and messianic times. The selections from the writings of the apostles present exhortations and instructions on different themes of this season. During this time of “joyful preparation” to celebrate the Nativity, let us pray a little more, attend Mass even during the week, read the Gospel according to Matthew, and control the “shopping urge”. Do something good for others. Teach your children to enjoy this season with Christ because Christ is the reason for this season! Page 2 Advent Wreath Formed from sprigs of green foliage in a circular shape (sign of eternity and everlasting life), which surround four candles (one pink and three purple coloured) the wreath sits on a table, or near the altar, or hangs from the ceiling. Lighting a distinct purple candle on each of three Sundays of Advent (on the third Sunday the pink candle is lighted as a sign of joy for the near birth of Jesus) symbolizes the coming of Christ, the Light of the World. Family prayers are recited and hymns sung each day or each week. Parents, try this year to have a wreath on your dining table, or in the most familiar spot of the house and gather around it with your children. Safety First when dropping students off at school The safety of all children and staff must be considered as paramount at all times when dropping students off at school. These incidents include vehicles entering the site in the wrong direction, parking and pulling out of no parking zones, parking in bus lanes, leaving vehicles in the kiss and ride lane. Was there opposition to separate schools before Confederation? Yes, as now, there were advocates of one school system. Protestant spokespersons believed in the adequacy of the common (now public) school’s basic non-denominational Christianity, which constituted an important element of the common school’s religion lessons and their readers. They held that beliefs specific to certain religions should be taught in the churches and homes. 5. Why did Catholics find the non-denominational religious education of the common school unsatisfactory? Catholics wanted separate schools where all the beliefs of the Catholic Church would be taught, where the pupils would live their faith in a sacramental and community manner in proximity to the parish church and priest, and where religion would permeate the reading, literature and history curriculum. Furthermore, as modern times arrived, the multiculturalism of the public school’s student body necessitated the eradication of the teaching of Christianity. 6. What sacrifices did Catholics have to make to send their children to separate schools? Because the United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West roughly had consisted of members advocating non-denominational common schools and half were in favour of them, separate school legislation, for about fifteen years, contained three obstacles to their existence: Catholics could establish and support a separate school, but had to continue paying common school taxes. Thus, they paid tuition for their children in the separate school; The separate school had no permanence of existence. If the local common school board hired a Catholic as one of its teachers, then the separate school ceased to exist. Separate schools kept opening and closing in the early years; In the cities the separate school board required the permission of the common school board to open a new or an additional separate school. Sometimes the permission was not forthcoming. The legislation required twelve Catholic heads of family resident within a city, town or township common school section. The townships’ common school sections were so small that often there were not twelve resident Catholic families. From the entire staff at St. Anthony, have a wonderful and blessed Christmas. Part of our work in this area includes providing students with consistent messaging about bullying prevention. During the month of December we will be focusing on the following key message: “ We all want to feel included”. Students will learn about the meaning of empathy, explore feelings associated with being excluded, learn friendship building skills and how to help someone feel included. Each month we will focus on an additional key message with students. Please take some time to discuss these key messages with your child(ren). I HAVE IDEAS! *I have thoughts and opinions that matter *I make good choices *I have hope for the future *I solve problems with knowledge, understanding and prayer *I know we are all equal and special BECAUSE I HAVE IDEAS, I HAVE A PURPOSE, AND I WILL LIVE MY LIFE LIKE JESUS. Christmas Spirit Week and Activities Homework Tip Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, or phone calls. Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be helpful. Our Christmas Spirit week will take place from December 14 to December 18, 2015. Each day we will have a special focus. Monday 14: Christmas Sweater Day Tuesday 15: Dress up as a Christmas Tree Day Wednesday 16: Santa Hat/Antlers Day Thursday 17: Elf Yourself Day Sports Corner We would like to congratulate our Intermediate Volleyball teams for representing St. Anthony at their respective competitions. The hard work and determination showed as you participated in the Mini Tournament. We wish our intermediate boys luck as they advance to the Family of Schools Finals. Many thanks to the staff who give so much of their time to coach teams. Pediculosis (Head Lice) Please check your children frequently and if you find them infested, we would ask that you let us know so we can advise you on the proper treatment. If a child does become infested, we will ask you to keep your child out of school until he/she has been treated with the correct medicated shampoo and his/her hair is entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs). When the child returns to school, the child needs to come to the office to be checked before going to class. If we all cooperate in these procedures we can address these occurrences in a sensitive manner. We may not entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them under control. Friday 18: Christmas Pajama Day Also, taking place this week we will have our annual used toy sale. All toys will be priced between $0.05 and $3.00. Thank you to those who have already donated used toys to our sale. Christmas Concert and Sing Along On Thursday, December 10, 2015 our FDK classes will be performing a Christmas Concert. The concert will take place in the gym from 1:30 to 3:00. On Wednesday, December 16, 2015 we will have a Christmas Sing - A - Long starting at 10:30 in the gym. Please join us if you are available. ECO UPDATE On Friday, November 27th members of our ECO team had the opportunity to participate in the Brampton North East Family of Schools Ecofest.
