A Prayer for September
Gracious and merciful God of all creation,
You have loved us since before we were born.
From our mothers’ wombs to our eternal place in heaven you
have given us the gifts to live and grow in safety.
We come to you now asking for the grace and strength to follow your plan and to form a safe, caring, inclusive community
here at St. Anthony.
May our faith in you and your plan lead us to know and feel
your presence among us.

Principal’s Message
On behalf of the entire staff at St. Anthony School, I would like to welcome everyone back to a new school year. We hope you all had a wonderful summer with
family and friends. A special welcome goes out to all new families and staff who
are joining us this year.
We would like to welcome Mrs. Power who will be teaching grade 2/3, Mrs. Reid
who is teaching grade 6, and Ms. Valentic who is teaching grade 1.
We would also like to congratulate Mrs. Nuzda and Mrs. Roussy on the birth of
their baby boys. We hope they have a wonderful year with their new little ones.
We wish everyone a successful school year filled with many exciting opportunities
for learning and growing together. We look forward to working with you and your
children.

SEPTEMBER VIRTUE: Faith
To begin the new school year, we will focus our attention on the first of our virtues – faith.
A faithful person believes that we are created, guided by and destined to be reunited with God.
A faithful person believes that God’s plan for us includes the right to be safe, especially at school.
A faithful person . . .
 Prays regularly and reverently
 Learns from scripture stories
 Honours people’s God given names
 Assumes that there is good in everyone
 Accepts the God given worth of themselves
and others

Student Attendance
If your child will be absent or late, please call
the school office at 905-792-2282. We have a
voicemail system so you may leave a message
24 hours/day. Please leave the following information:
 Child’s name
 Child’s teacher
 Reason for absence
Lunch Policy
Thank you for completing the Lunch Permission
Form and returning it to your child’s teacher. This
will ensure that the school is aware of where you
prefer your child(ren) to be over the lunch hour.
Any changes to the agreement throughout the year
must be submitted in writing to the teacher and/or
office. Thank you for your cooperation in this
matter.
Once children have arrived back at school, they
must remain on school property. They are not permitted to leave school again without written permission.
A table is located outside the office for lunches.
Lunches should only be dropped off on rare occasions. If you are dropping off a lunch for your child
please clearly label your child’s name and teacher’s
name on the outside of the lunch bag/container and
place it on the table. Please advise your child(ren)
to expect a lunch to be dropped off.

Visitors to the School
For information on bussing please visit:
Please note that all visitors to the school including parents/guardians must enter through the
front doors and report directly to the office.
To ensure the safety of all students, parents are
asked to remain outside the school yard boundaries when dropping off or picking up their children. Likewise, pets are not permitted within
the school yard boundaries. Please remember
that although you are a parent/guardian to your
child, you are a stranger to other children.
Please be assured that staff supervisors are on
duty in the yard from 8:15 AM to 8:30 AM each
day, and from 3:00 PM to 3:10 PM to ensure the
safe arrival and dismissal of our students.
http://businfo.stopr.ca
If your child does not currently qualify for bussing you
may submit a written request for a courtesy seat during
the month of September to Ms. Cassar. Please indicate
your child’s name, grade, home address and reason for
your request in the letter. Please note that courtesy
seats are not available until all eligible bussing has been
processed (usually early October) and that we may not
be able to accommodate all requests.
Homework Policy
Please be advised that teachers at St. Anthony will adhere to the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board policy
on Homework – Kindergarten to Grade 12. In particular, the policy states that homework shall not be assigned to
students in kindergarten. Homework in the early grades (grades 1-3) shall more often take the form of reading, playing, discussing, listening, viewing, and interactive activities such as building and cooking with the family. In later
grades (grades 4-8) homework may take the form of independent work, with a maximum of 40 minutes per day, and
a maximum of 60 minutes per day on average for intermediate students. A summary of the policy can be found in
your child’s agenda (grades 1-8).
Custody of Children
On rare occasions, we are faced with difficult situations in
which non-custodial parents arrive at school asking to visit
their child or to take their child home after school. We are
best able to serve and protect students when we are made
aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights and other special instructions. If legal custody matters affect your
family, please ensure that our office and classroom teachers
are aware of any custodial arrangements that may affect your
child during school hours.
PA DAY
Please note there is a PA Day on Friday, September 18,
2015. There is no school for students on this day.
Medications
It is crucial that you notify the office of any serious health
concerns. If this applies to your child you are asked to provide us with treatment procedures in written format.
There is a Board policy on the storage and administration of
medication. Where a student is required to take medication at school, medication forms must be completed by you
and your physician prior to the storage and administration
of any prescribed medication by the school. The storage
and administration of an Epi-Pen requires additional forms
to be completed by physicians. These forms are available
from the school.
To ensure the safety of all our children, please do not send
medication to school unless you have made arrangements
with the school in advance.

Kiss and Ride/Parking/Safety
Thank you to the many parents who continue to follow the
safety guidelines for the drop off and pick up of children.
These guidelines are in place to keep all children safe.
The following reviews the school protocol:
St. Anthony Catholic School Council
We would like to thank the St. Anthony Catholic
School Council for all of their support last year. We
value their input into a variety of educational issues.
We hope that last year’s members will consider returning this year. We look forward to your skills and
contributions.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
The KISS and RIDE LANE is designed to be a quick and convenient method to drop off children at school, without the need to
park or leave your vehicle.
Illegally parked vehicles pose a danger to students and pedestrians.
After dropping children at Kiss and Ride, parents are to use the
front drive through lane. There is no parking in this area.
If you wish to walk your child to school, please park in a designated spot or on the road. When walking from the parking lot
or road please use designated walkways and DO NOT walk
through the kiss and ride lanes or the drive through.
Your support and cooperation is appreciated.
If you are interested in being a member of the 2015 2016 St. Anthony Catholic School Council, or would
like to nominate an excellent candidate in the community, please fill out a nomination form. Nomination forms are due back at the school office no later
than 3:00 p.m. September 25, 2015.
Should the number of candidates be less than or
equal to the number of positions, the candidates shall
be acclaimed. Should an election be necessary, you
will receive information listing the names of the candidates. Elections will take place on October 5,
2015 at 6:30 p.m. by secret ballot if needed. Eligible voters must vote in person. Proxy voting is not
permitted. Our first meeting will take place on October 5, 2015 @ 6:30 p.m.
OPEN HOUSE BBQ
Our Open House BBQ will take place on Thursday, September 17, 2014. BBQ from 5:30-6:30 and classroom
visits from 6:00-7:00p.m. We hope you are able to join
us!

Scholastic Book Fair
Our Scholastic Book Fair will take place Monday, September 14 to Thursday, September 17, 2015. Students will have the opportunity to browse and purchase books during the regular school day. The book
fair will also be open on Thursday, September 17th from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm for families to visit. Please
stop by and check out the great selection of books and items available. All proceeds from the book fair
support the purchase of new books for our school library.
Allergy Alert – Sabrina’s Law
We have a number of students at St. Anthony School with life threatening allergies. Anaphylaxis is a severe and lifethreatening reaction caused by even very small quantities of the allergen. The most common allergens are food
(peanuts, nut products and by-products, sesame and shellfish, for example), insect stings, medications and latex. We
ask for the cooperation of the entire school community by NOT sending any lunches, snacks, or treats that contain
peanuts, nut products or fish (including Tim Hortons’ doughnuts and/or timbits, which are not nut free). Please be
aware that your child will not be permitted to eat a snack/lunch that contains even small quantities of these ingredients. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, please do not send food products to be shared
in the classroom. We suggest, instead, that you consider non-food items like pencils or stickers. Alternatively, you
could purchase an age-appropriate book to donate to your child’s classroom in his or her honour.

Personal Electronic Devices on Board Premises and/or
Board Sanctioned Events for Educational Purposes:
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students
are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices
(PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events
for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and
only with parent/guardian permission (GF 066, Network
User Application and Agreement). Students may register
their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network
Student Agreement” and the “Network User Application and
Agreement.” Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any
cost incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere
with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code
of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal
communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will
continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to
comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by
school administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during schoolsanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose
outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or
stolen devices.
Further information will be sent home in October
prior to our school going live with student registration of PEDS.
Sports / Clubs Corner
This year there will be a wide variety of sports teams
and clubs running at St. Anthony school. We hope to
have something to meet the interests of all students.
We encourage students to join a team or club this
year. It is a great way to learn new skills, meet new
friends, have fun and support your school. Students,
listen for information over the next few weeks for further details.
Pediculosis (Head Lice)
Please check your children frequently and if you find
them infested, we would ask that you let us know so we
can advise you on the proper treatment. If a child does
become infested, we will ask you to keep your child out
of school until he/she has been treated with the correct
medicated shampoo and his/her hair is entirely clear of
both lice and nits (eggs). When the child returns to
school, the child needs to come to the office to be
checked before going to class.
If we all cooperate in these procedures we can address
these occurrences in a sensitive manner. We may not
entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring
them under control.
ECO UPDATE
Congratulations to the St. Anthony School Community for achieving Silver ECO Schools Certification.
Thank you to our ECO Team for all your hard work
throughout the year and to all staff and students
who participated in our monthly ECO challenges!
Home Work Tip of the Month
Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure children have a well lit place that is free from distractions to complete homework. Keep supplies - paper, pencils, glue, scissors - within reach.
TERRY FOX WALK
On Friday, September 25, 2015 the St. Anthony
school community will participate in the annual
Terry Fox Walk. Over the next two weeks students
are working to fill a mason jar with coins as a donation to the Terry Fox Foundation. The class with
the most coins will win a prize.
Anti-Bullying Key Message
Every month we will focus on an anti-bullying key
message. This month’s message is “Everyone has
a right to be safe at school”. Throughout the
month students will explore ideas that will help
make our school a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations
Distinctive expectations for graduates of Catholic schools are determined and shaped by the vision and destiny of the human person emerging from our faith tradition. This Christian anthropology or world view, reveals the dignity and value of
the person. Our tradition tells us God creatively and lovingly calls each of us into the wonder of life, sustaining us by the
power of the Holy Spirit, throughout the human journey, into life eternal. We acknowledge that the journey includes moments of brokenness and sin.
We recognize in the person of Jesus, the risen Christ, the human face of God sharing our life in order to heal us of our brokenness and liberate us from sin. This Christian vision of the human journey is best understood within the context of relationship. It is accomplished in community, in solidarity with brothers and sisters in the Church and beyond.
Catholic education views human life as an integration of body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this vision, Catholic education
fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic quest. The expectations of Catholic graduates, therefore, are described not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but in terms of values, attitudes and actions.
The Graduate is expected to be:
A discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery of God's
presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living.
An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of gospel values.
A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral
conscience for the common good.
A self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who develops and demonstrates their God-given potential.
A collaborative contributor who finds meaning, dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of all and contributes to the common good.
A caring family member who attends to family, school, parish, and the wider community.
A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of
human life.
Throughout the year we will focus on these expectations with our students from JK to Grade 8 in age appropriate ways.
Watch for examples of these expectations in action in our monthly newsletter and on our twitter feed.
