St. Francis of Assisi School 2480 THORN LODGE DRIVE, MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO, L5K 1K5 (905) 822-3183 Fax (905)-822-7540 Wednesday, MaWednesday, March 25, 2009 Wednesday May 2, 2012 Dear Parent/Guardian: It has been brought to our attention by our Board’s Instructional Council that schools have been approached by representatives of WOWBUTTER, promoting their product as peanut free and safe for students. The WOWBUTTER product is a soy product that simulates peanut butter and has recently been brought to schools by students as a peanut butter alternative. Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board staff has consulted with the Anaphylactic Society and Peel Health Department to ensure due diligence and whether this product should be allowed at schools. Both the Anaphylactic Society and the Peel Health Department have indicated that Dufferin-Peel has created safe measures to ensure that students with food allergies are safe in schools. Several measures have been put in place for these students, as well as education for other students regarding foods that can cause an anaphylactic allergy. Peel Health has identified that one of the foods that can cause an anaphylactic allergy is soy. Therefore the WOWBUTTER product would not only present a risk to students with a soy anaphylactic allergy, but a concern for staff and for students who have a peanut allergy. To that end, it is the Board’s recommendation with the support of both the Anaphylactic Society and the Peel Health Department that schools do not encourage the use of WOWBUTTER. Please contact us at the school if you have any questions. Sincerely, S. Palmateer Principal
