1 |Dare to Learn! Dare to Dream!
As Christians, we begin our Advent journey, which prepares us for Jesus to come into
our world. How shall we prepare in our classrooms and school communities and within
our families for the arrival of our Lord and Saviour? Most importantly, how shall we
prepare our hearts for Jesus?
God's sending of Jesus is an act of mercy for the world, and so the season of Advent is
a perfect time for reflection upon themes of mercy and hope. Pope Francis has called
upon all Catholics to be a living sign of God's love for the world. By embracing the call to
mercy, we will know the full grace of the season.
Our schools will offer us opportunities through prayer and liturgy, through pageants and
works of charity. Our churches will invite us to prepare our hearts through Sunday
Eucharist, through the sacrament of reconciliation, through prayer and by inviting us to
renew our participation at Sunday Eucharist with our families. And our homes will be
adorned with Christmas decorations and Advent wreathes. All of these are ways in
which Catholics answer John the Baptist’s call to “Prepare ye the way of the Lord.” May
the blessings of the season be upon you,

Virtue of the Month:
HopE
God helps up to keep working on a more peaceful world even when we feel
discouraged.
Our Daily Prayer for December:
Let us pray for the grace and courage to be people of hope, people who can see,
participate in and contribute to God's goodness emerging around us.
AMEN
A hopeful person is...
inspired and inspires others…optimistic…one who seeks good things from life…
one who sees the good in the world
From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate Expectations, a person of Hope…
 Sees more good than evil in the world
 Acts legally and morally
May the God of hope fill you with all the joy and peace in believing, so that you
may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans: 15:13
Sometimes in life, bad things happen to us that we cannot explain. During these times
we tend to get mad at God for putting us through so much pain. We forget God is
always there for us and He does not want to hurt us. When you feel sad and alone,
remember to never lose HOPE, pray to Jesus and things will get better.

and to prepare our hearts, as a community, for the coming of our Saviour. Prepare the way of the
Lord!
GRADE 2 Students Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation:
What a wonderful evening we had as we prayed and celebrated with our Grade 2 students
as they made their sacrament of First reconciliation on November 25th. Together with
family, friends and staff, under the spritiual guidance of Fr. Tim, we were all lead through
prayer and a reflection period before the sacrament. The Rite of Reconciliation stresses
the healing presence of Christ. After an examination of conscience, students seek
forgiveness, as they begin to recognize their continuous dependence on Jesus’ love and mercy.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN: A School Council Lead Initiative
St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church has called upon us to continue to support
their Christmas campaign for needy families in our area. As in the past, they
are requesting gift cards to be donated in lieu of actual presents or food. By
requesting gift cards, the giving process is simplified during this busy time of
the year. More importantly however, parents in need can purchase what they
wish in order to give their families a special Christmas. Gift cards from
NO FRILLS, WALMART, and FOOD BASICS are the ones most requested in
our area. SVdP will accept cash donations as well, and then purchase cards on
our behalf. Last year, through the St. Vincent de Paul society, we helped
94 families including 186 children, all of whom reside in our immediate neighbourhood. Please
submit your gift cards to the school before December 11. Volunteers will then coordinate and distribute
these gifts of hope. If you wish to receive a tax receipt from SVdP, please pick up a tax receipt form
from the main office. Thank you in advance, your gift this Christmas season will make the holidays very
special for our neighbours in need.
OUTDOOR PLAY
Snow season is here. Please ensure that your child is properly dressed for outdoor
play in a Canadian winter. It is a school expectation that all students go outside
for recess for exercise and fresh air. If your child is unable to go outside for
recess because of illness, please consider keeping them home until they are feeling
better. We also ask that your child have a pair of indoor shoes for classroom
use, labeled with their name for easy identification. Many students are not
remembering to bring a separate pair of shoes, and are tracking the mud from the
field into the classrooms, hallways and bathrooms. Your help with this is appreciated. We would also
appreciate your support in reinforcing the school rule that all snow stays on the ground. For
everyone’s safety we do not allow snowballs, kicking snow, or any other snow\ice activity that could
lead to potential harm or injury.
After a strong and thrilling ending to this year’s volleyball season, the boys can feel proud to have
finished 2nd in their division and going the distance in the playoffs by losing to St. Luke by only 4 points
in the 3rd and final set. Great season boys! Go Wildcats.
The girls intermediate Volleyball showed great improvement since the beginning of
the season. They finished it off by going the distance against St. Mark losing only
by 1 point with a 25-24 final. Great season Girls. Wildcats on 3 - 1,2,3 Gooooooo

BUS CANCELLATIONS
During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption to bus transportation
and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close
schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the local radio stations:
The message usually takes the following form, “The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board and the Peel District School Board buses are cancelled.” This means that
buses are cancelled for the entire day. Or, to indicate school closures, “The schools
and offices of the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have
been closed.” Should the announcement refer to cancellation only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this
does NOT affect our school.

From Your Catholic School Trustee
Sharon Hobin
I am so pleased that Marianne Mazzorato is our new Director of Education Designate. She will become
our Director on January 15, 2016. As you know our current Director John Kostoff will be retiring in the
New Year. John has devoted many years as a teacher, superintendent, Associate Director and Director of
Education for Dufferin-Peel. It is with much gratitude that we wish him well.
Ms. Mazzorato has been a teacher, principal, superintendent, and spent a few years working with the
Ministry of Education in the EQAO department. She brings to us much enthusiasm, a true belief in Catholic
education and a goal to provide the best opportunities for each student. Ms. Mazzorato believes “positive
relationships imbued with trust, confidence and competency increases the likelihood that Dufferin-Peel
will continue to be a vibrant board as evidenced through increased student achievement and well-being,
system morale and well-being, growth and leadership of everyone in the organization and the confidence
of parents, our partners in Catholic education, parishes, and the public at large. Each and every child
deserves our collective commitment to help them succeed in all aspects of their growth, well-being and
development.”
Thank you to all of our schools for the heartwarming tributes to our veterans on November 11th. We
owe a great debt of gratitude to our veterans of all wars and conflicts. We are blessed to live in this
great country and with the events of the last weeks we continue to value freedom and resolve to always
stand for and protect that freedom. My parents were veterans of World War II. So I wear my poppy
with great pride and in remembrance of them.
Thank you to all of our administrators and teachers for their hard work. It shows again and again and as
ever, in our 2015 EQAO scores. And while we can always improve we know that we can be assured that
our students are reaching the goals that have been set for and by us. Each school will continue to
develop their own plans for improvement. Results can be found on our Dufferin-Peel web site.
During this Advent season many of our schools will be taking part in Advent Masses, liturgies, concerts,
breakfasts with Santa and many other activities. I love this time of year in my schools and I encourage
you to attend one or more of these Masses and events. These touching events will bring the true
meaning of Christmas to the forefront in your minds and hearts.
Please consult the Dufferin-Peel web site for minutes of meetings, meeting schedules, current events,
news and more. The web address is www.dpcdsb.org
I wish you a happy and blessed Christmas and the very best for 2016. May God continue to bless us and
to change hearts from evil to good, bringing peace to all.
St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Campaign
Dear All Saints Families,
St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church has called upon us to continue our support of their Christmas
campaign for needy families in our area.
By requesting gift cards only, the distribution process has been simplified during this busy time of
year. More importantly however, parents in need can use the gift cards to purchase special gifts for
their children. Parents will also have the ability to prioritize individual needs and wants and give their
families a very special Christmas. They can also go as a family to purchase the food they want to
celebrate the Christmas season, especially if by culture or dietary restrictions, there are particular
things they prefer or must avoid.
All Saints donors have always been very generous and we hope that you will continue in your
generosity by supporting a family. Since many of the families have no access to a vehicle, the
committee kindly requests that gift cards are from No Frills, Food Basics, or Walmart. If you wish
to make a cash donation, the St. Vincent de Paul Society will purchase gift cards on our behalf.
Last year through the St. Vincent de Paul, we helped 94 families including 186 children, all of
whom reside in our immediate neighbourhood. This year, the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Loyola
will continue their great work to help needy families in our community. Along with families within the
Parish who donate; families at All Saints, St. Clare, St. Mark and Loyola H.S. are asked to help meet
these needs.
People who apply to the Church for financial help are visited by SVP society members, who then
assess their needs and qualify the family for assistance if warranted. It could be single parent
families, people with physical or mental disabilities, families dealing with illness, seniors, new
Canadians, or simply families who are affected by a difficult economy.
To facilitate distribution, please submit your donation by Friday December 11th. If you wish to
receive a tax receipt, please fill in and submit the attached form with your donation. You will
then receive a tax receipt from St. Vincent de Paul in the New Year. Thank you in advance for your
continued support. Your gift this Christmas season will make the holidays very special for our
neighbours in need.
All Saints School Council
St. Vincent de Paul 2015 Christmas Campaign
How can we help in 2015?
All donated gift cards will be distributed among the 90+ families that qualified for help. Please be
sure to send in your donation to the school office by Friday December 11th.
Grocery gift cards: Since transportation may be an issue, the Church has requested that the
grocery cards come from No Frills, Food Basics or Walmart.
Family gift cards: Walmart does offer one stop shopping for groceries, clothes, toys or other
household needs.
Cash/Cheque: If you prefer to make a cash donation, the money will be used by the SVP Church
committee to purchase additional gift cards as appropriate. Please be sure to put it in an envelope or
Ziploc bag and include the donation form below.
Cheques can be made out directly to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Tax Receipts: Donations over $25 will be eligible to receive a tax receipt. Please fill in the
information below and return this portion of the form with your gift card, cash or cheque donation in
the same envelope. If you wish your donation be added to your St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church
receipt for 2015, please mark down your envelope number, otherwise it will be sent to your home
address.
Thank you for your continued support. Merry Christmas!

Geometry
Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth
The ability to identify and describe
shapes, sizes, positions, directions, and
movement is important in many work
situations, such as construction and
design, as well as in creating and
understanding art. Becoming familiar
with shapes and spatial relationships in
their environment will help children
grasp the principles of geometry in
later grades.
What do we mean by “mindset”?
Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have for
ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our behavior
and influence our responses to daily events.
- Dr. Robert Brooks

Support
Web Resource: (Intermediate Level)

 Expectations should focus on habits, effort, and
growth, not grades.
 Provide your child with other supports (extra help,
additional resources). Don’t assume that “you could

Financial Literacy!
Let’s discuss some factors affecting “Money
Decisions”…
 Ask your child to keep a log for one
week of all the times, instances, or
circumstances that he/she has an
encounter with money (e.g., a bus ride,
buying gum at a store, going to the bank
or ATM, buying an app or music).
 Ask your child to make a list of all the
ways in which money enters into
his/her daily life.
 Discuss with your child his/her money
encounters (e.g., what was the total
value of your money encounters?)
