Christ is risen! He has come to bring light to the darkness! He comes so that we are witness to the many signs of spring. The hills of snow have begun to melt and we begin to see tulips, crocuses and other spring flowers trying to pierce the ground and begin the cycle of rebirth. The beginning of spring is a time to evaluate what needs to be done in order to have our environment looking it’s best. The gardens around us will begin to come alive again. This continuous cycle of rebirth represents our hope for the future and God’s challenge for each of us to embrace the many gifts and talents that we have. Spring is also a time when the daylight hours become extended. The symbol of light offers us a positive image of the risen Christ and represents His challenge to us since He asks us to light the path for others. We hope that this season of spring brings a period of health and rest to our entire school community. We wish you all the Blessings of Easter! Mrs. N. Levey and Mrs. A.J. Hilario Dare to Learn! TWITTER: Follow us on Twitter: @ALLSAINTSDPCDSB CLASS PLACEMENTS The staff at All Saints will meet during the month of May to begin discussing an appropriate placement for each student for next year. When determining placements, some of the criteria we consider are: Academic ability Date of birth Individual work habits Social considerations and study skills Placement history Maturity If you have any concerns about your child’s class placement for September, please complete the attached Parent Input for Class Placement. You are asked to return these forms to Mrs. Levey. Please refrain from making a personal request for a specific teacher as staffing is always tentative and changes often take place between the time of tentative class placements and September. Our decisions are made after careful consideration of all relevant information and are based on the individual strengths and needs of each child. | Dare to Learn! Dare to Dream! ALL SAINTS: APRIL Newsletter Welcome to Kindergarten On May 3, at 7:00 p.m. we will be running the “Welcome to Kindergarten” program for students new to kindergarten in September 2016. The evening will begin with a brief presentation by the current FDK educators. Parents and children will then be part of different inter-active activities in preparation for their start in kindergarten. Each child will receive a bag of materials to support their learning. EQAO testing of our grades 3 and 6 students will take place from May 30th to June 10th. Please try to avoid scheduling any appointments or anything else that will take your child out of school during these dates. A letter to grades 3 and 6 parents will be sent home closer to the testing dates. ONLINE REPORTING TOOL The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board has developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and inclusive school environment. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed to the principal and/or vice principal and will be dealt with accordingly. It is important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the school. HEAD INJURY POLICY When a student receives an injury/bump to the head (however minor), it is a Board Policy that we inform parents through a phone call. This is only precautionary and we ask that you check your child when they get home for any signs of a concussion or illness. ARE YOU MOVING? If you are planning a move, or have already moved, please let us know. If you are moving to a new school we will give you a Transfer Form to take with you to the new school. We will be preparing classes for next September and this information will be helpful in determining class sizes. STUDENTS ARRIVING LATE TO SCHOOL We have had an increase in the number of students who arrive late to school in the mornings. Especially as more wintery weather approaches, it is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional activities and classroom routines. School starts at 8:45 am and student supervision begins at 8:30 am. Students should be at school with enough time to line up and enter with their classes. Please note that if they do not arrive on time to make it to their line as the bell rings, they need to enter through the front doors and check into the office to pick up an admit slip before going to class. Dare to Learn! Dare to Dream! ALL SAINTS: APRIL Newsletter ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION As part of our Safe Arrival Program we ask that you notify the school if your child will arrive late or will be absent from school for any reason. We ask that you inform us by calling the school at 905-828-6348 and leaving details regarding the absence. The answering machine is on 24 hours daily so your information may be relayed at any time. This practice will greatly assist us to track and verify student attendance at school. ENTRY AND EXIT We are attempting to control the flow of traffic through the front doors of the school. To that end, we appreciate support from parents in reinforcing our message to students: students are to use their recess doors for entry to school in the morning and for exit from school in the afternoon. Students are welcome to use the front doors of the school when accompanied by an adult (i.e. when leaving or returning from scheduled appointments, etc.) SPRING WEATHER BRINGS MUD! With the long, wet winter and the unpredictable temperatures, our schoolyard alternates from icy and slippery to soggy and muddy. When conditions become dangerous or too wet, we will close the field at recess. When the weather improves and the field becomes dry, students will be able to use the field. Students should also come dressed appropriately for the weather (water boots, change of pants, etc.) For health and safety reasons we must insist on indoor shoes. Students cannot walk through the school with wet boots or shoes. For their safety and comfort they need to have indoor shoes. Please note that in the event of an emergency evacuation, students will not have the opportunity to put boots on. LOST AND FOUND The bin is full! All of this stuff has an owner somewhere in our school… it was brought here by the students, so it belongs to someone. If you are looking for that lost hat, winter coat, snow pants, pair of running shoes, or lunch box you can probably find it here. All classes will have an opportunity to walk past the lost and found but you are welcome to come in and check as well. Unclaimed items will be bagged up and donated to a local charity. Please ensure that your child’s items are labelled with their name so that if they do get lost, they can be returned. HATS OFF TO KIDZ MAY 2, 2016 All Saints once again will lead the fight for Leukemia research for Sick Kids Hospital within our annual HATS OFF TO KIDZ walk- a-thon. Our event take place on Monday May 2nd . Hats off to Kidz is a charitable organization in the support of Leukemia research for the Hospital for Sick Children and the Sick Kids Foundation. We invite all members of our school community to “be the voice of children” and join us on this very special day. On the event day students are asked to wear blue and white, and bring a hat. | Dare to Learn! Dare to Dream! ALL SAINTS: APRIL Newsletter Battery Collection Thank you to all students, parents and staff for a very successful battery challenge! As a school community, we fulfilled our mission by recycling as many used batteries as we can to ensure they do not end up in landfills, where they are not only added to soil waste but can be harmful to the environment. With your help we collected enough batteries to fill 7 Call2Recycle collection boxes! The battery collection for this school year has ended. Please continue to recycle used batteries by taking them to a designated collection site. Visit Call2Recycle.ca to find the closest battery collection site near you. The Great Gulp Challenge On Wednesday, March 23rd All Saints School took part in ‘The Great Gulp’ by organizing a school-wide, synchronized drink of tap water. The event created a learning experience where students had the opportunity to learn about tap water in Peel. Students were also encouraged to drink from a reusable water bottle, instead of plastic bottles, to reinforce the importance of creating less waste. Earth Week begins April 18th – April 22nd. She maintained an appointment for 8 years as Assistant Professor (PT) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University where she conducted research on prevention and intervention with anxious and depressed children, provided treatment in the child, adolescent, and adult hospital programs, and trained residents and interns in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). She has worked on the CBT Unit at the former Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto (now CAMH), at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, the Mood Disorders program at the former Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital, the Adolescent Program and Eating Disorders Clinic at McMaster University Medical Centre, and the Child and Family Centre at Chedoke Hospital, Hamilton. Children who are excessively stressed or anxious can underachieve in school, have low self-esteem, be angry, sad and lonely, have difficulty with schoolwork and have difficult family and peer relationships. Parents have a significant impact on how well children respond to stress and anxiety. Therefore, it is important that we, as parents, teach ourselves healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety so we can pass on this knowledge to our children. We also need to follow some fundamental parenting principles so children learn how to self-regulate when stressed and anxious. Healthy habits learned in childhood promote lifelong healthy habits and a happier and more productive life. This presentation will describe some reasons why children are more stressed and anxious than before and help parents develop resilience, reduce stress, improve their child’s overall well-being and create a happier home. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. Keynote Address 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon A Being Catholic is Cool!! Focus in these areas can effect a child’s behaviour, growth and development, both mentally and physically Volume 3 April Fractions Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth While whole numbers represent quantities of whole units, fractions signify parts of whole units or parts of sets. Although fractions are all around us, learning about fractions may be challenging for some children. Identifying fractions in our environment makes them meaningful and easier to visualize. What do we mean by “growth mindset”? Mindsets change is not about picking up a few pointers here and there. It’s about seeing things in a new way… changing from a “judge and be-judged” framework to a “learn-and-help learn” framework. – Carol S. Dweck Web Resources: CLIPS (Critical Learning Instructional Paths Supports) Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset: Tip # 7. Provide Honest, Constructive Criticism That Emphasizes Growth Work with your child to identify strategies for improvement. Use phrases like: “Let me add new information to help you solve this…” or “What parts were difficult for you? Let’s look at them.” http://oame.on.ca/CLIPS/ Family Math Activity K – 3: Big Idea A fraction shows the relationship between a part and a whole. With your child, gather several similarly shaped objects, such as a piece of paper, a towel, a placemat, a picture frame, a magazine and a book. Ask your child to show you one half of each object, perhaps by using a ruler to mark the halfway point. This is an opportunity for your child to see that fractional portions must be of equal size. Extension: Ask your child to show you one fourth of each object. Family Math Activity 4-6: Ask what real-life situations might these fractions describe: Two fifths 2/5, Three sixths 3/6, Five eighths 5/8 (e.g. Five eggs have been eaten from the dozen. This represents 5/12 of the set. Can your child describe the fraction of eggs eaten (5/12) and the remaining eggs (7/12)?) Grades 7 & 8: Continuing the Conversation about Financial Literacy! Explore Career Possibilities Talk to your child about: What two things do you enjoy most in life? o What career possibilities are there in these two areas? What are you best at in terms of your own abilities? o Are there career possibilities that fit with these talents? All intermediate students have access to My Blueprint (Career Pathways Planning): - Have your child go online and share his/her profile with you. http://www.myblueprint.ca/ “Give to the Emperor what belongs to him, and give to God what belongs to God.” Matthew 22: 17-21 Extraordinary lives start with a great Catholic education.
