St. Aidan Catholic Elementary School 34 Buick Boulevard Brampton, Ontario L7A 3B9 Phone: 905-840-3042 Principal D. Clifford Fax: 905-840-0820 December 2014 ADVENT Vice-Principal M. Moncur Head Secretary C. Moore Assistant Secretary T. Gout Superintendent S. Steer Trustees The liturgical season of Advent prepares us for Christmas, when we recall Christ’s first coming among us. Advent is a season of joyful expectation. During Advent, each Sunday’s gospel has a specific theme. The Old Testament readings, especially those taken from Isaiah, are prophecies about the Messiah and messianic times. The selections from the writings of the apostles present exhortations and instructions on different themes of this season. During this time of “joyful preparation” to celebrate the Nativity, let us pray a little more, attend Mass – perhaps even during the week, read the Gospel according to Matthew, and control the “shopping urge.” Do something good for others. Teach your children to enjoy this season with Christ because Christ is the reason for this season! D. B. D’Souza F. Di Cosola Parish Guardian Angels Pastor Advent Wreath Fr. Jan Gogolewski Formed from sprigs of green foliage in a circular shape (sign of eternity and everlasting life), which surround four candles (one pink and three purple), the Advent wreath sits on a table, or near the altar, or hangs from the ceiling. Lighting a distinct purple candle on each of three Sundays of Advent (on the third Sunday the pink candle is lit as a sign of joy for the near birth of Jesus) symbolizes the coming of Christ, the Light of the World. Family prayers are recited and hymns sung each day or each week. Parents, try this year to have a wreath on your dining table, or in a familiar spot of the house and gather around it with your children. Thank you to all participants. It is that time of year when students need to be reminded of the necessity of dressing properly for the weather (mittens, hats, scarves, boots, etc.). Labelling items would be helpful, as many boots and mittens look similar. We ask that each child have indoor footwear and boots to wear outside when it is rainy or snowy. Except during extreme cold or rain, students go outside during recess and the lunch hour. Homework Tip Create a homework supply kit. This kit can include materials that your child will use on a regular basis such as pencils, pens, ruler, paper, crayons, markers, glue, scissors, etc. By having these supplies on hand, time is not wasted searching for them when they are required. Our Catholic School Heritage Each month we will highlight some key questions/answers related to our Catholic School Heritage. 1. Was there opposition to separate schools before Confederation? Yes, as now, there were advocates of one school system. Protestant spokespersons believed in the adequacy of the common (now public) school’s basic non-denominational Christianity, which constituted an important element of the common school’s religion lessons and their readers. They held that beliefs specific to certain religions should be taught in the churches and homes. 2. Why did Catholics find the non-denominational religious education of the common school unsatisfactory? Catholics wanted separate schools where all the beliefs of the Catholic Church would be taught, where the pupils would live their faith in a sacramental and community manner in proximity to the parish church and priest, and where religion would permeate the reading, literature and history curriculum. Furthermore, as modern times arrived, the multiculturalism of the public school’s student body necessitated the eradication of the teaching of Christianity. 3. What sacrifices did Catholics have to make to send their children to separate schools? Because the United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West roughly had consisted of members advocating non-denominational common schools and half were in favour of them, separate school legislation, for about fifteen years, contained three obstacles to their existence: (a) Catholics could establish and support a separate school, but had to continue paying common school taxes. Thus, they paid tuition for their children in the separate school; (b) The separate school had no permanence of existence. If the local common school board hired a Catholic as one of its teachers, then Enlightened by Knowledge, Enriched by Faith the separate school ceased to exist. Separate schools kept opening and closing in the early years; (c) In the cities the separate school board required the permission of the common school board to open a new or an additional separate school. Sometimes the permission was not forthcoming. (d) The legislation required twelve Catholic heads of family resident within a city, town or township common school section. The townships’ common school sections were so small that often there were not twelve resident Catholic families.
