Course Description
In Geometry, students will develop reasoning and problem solving skills as they study topics such as
congruence and similarity, and apply properties of lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles. Students
will also develop problem solving skills by using length, perimeter, area, circumference, surface area, and
volume to solve real-world problems and to promote higher-order thinking skills.
Geometry includes exercises in algebra, data analysis, and probability. These math topics often appear on
standardized tests, so maintaining students’ familiarity with them is important.
Geometry is a subject that will require you to build a body of knowledge. Concepts learned in the
beginning of the year will be used repeatedly throughout the year and your understanding of new
concepts will depend on your grasp of previous concepts. It is essential that you concentrate each
day and focus on the subject matter at hand in class and at home. To succeed in this course, you must
exhibit a strong work ethic and you must accept responsibility for the material presented on a daily
basis.
Topics Covered:
 Points, Lines, Planes, and Angles
 Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
 Triangle Congruency
 Relationships within Triangles
 Polygon Similarity
 Right Triangles and Trigonometry
 Properties of Quadrilaterals
 Properties of Circles
 Length and Area
 Surface Area and Volume
Classroom Procedures:
We will utilize a variety of class activities and students will be expected to follow some general classroom
procedures to ensure the best possible learning environment. These include the following:
1. Policies in Penncrest’s Discipline Code and Policy handbook will be applied in this classroom.
2. Come to class ON TIME and BE PREPARED. Please have class materials, pencils, and
calculator for class each day.
3. iPads and phones must be away unless you are instructed to use these devices during class.
iPads and phones are not to be used as calculators.
4. Courteous and respectful behavior towards peers, teachers, and any person present in the
classroom is expected at all times.
5. ASK QUESTIONS and use mistakes as a learning opportunity!!
Grades:
Tests:
Quizzes:
Classwork:
Homework:
60-100 points per test
10-40 points per quiz
10 points per assignment
Checked for completion/and or accuracy 5 points per assignment
Classwork and Homework:
This is your opportunity to practice what you have learned in class and/or prepare for an assessment.
Procedures for grades are:
1. Homework is generally graded for completion and that a correct attempt is made. Classwork
may be graded for accuracy.
2. Work not completed will be counted as a zero. If the assignment is completed, late work will
entered into HAC at the end of the week. Late assignments should be left in the “late bin.”
3. Missed work due to an absence is expected to be completed. Late work from any day in the
previous week can be found in the files at the side of the classroom or found on my website.
4. Classwork and Homework is a great way to boost your grade, so ALWAYS do/makeup
work.
Absences :
1. When absent from class, it is your responsibility to find out what was missed and schedule a
make-up if necessary. All missed notes/note keys and assignments can be found on my
website.
2. You should make up work in a timely manner.
3. If you are absent before a test, you may still be responsible to take the test on the day
you return so be prepared.
4. If you are absent on the day of a test, you will likely take the test the day you return.
Extra Help:
If you are even slightly confused, please see me to stay after for extra help. I am available most days after
school, except Mondays, and will coordinate a day with you that works. I encourage students to take
advantage of math peer tutoring opportunities available at Penncrest as an additional resource.
Materials:
1. Text: McDougal Littell Geometry. Students will be given a textbook to leave at home. A set
will remain in the classroom. You DO NOT need to bring your textbook to class each day. We
also have online textbook access. The website can be found on the Geometry Page of my
website. Username: penncrest Password: penncrest.
2. You will receive a “Notes Book” to be used during class. Please bring it to class each day, do
not loose it very few extras are made.
3. Suggested: Folder and notebook to do practice problems and file math papers.
4. iPads will be used sporadically in class. Free apps will be downloaded and expected to be used.
5. We will be using TI Graphing Calculators frequently. I will have a small class set that can be
used or leased for the year; however, it is highly recommended that you purchase your own
Graphing Calculator.
The TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, or the TI-84+ Silver Edition are great investments!
