I would like to extend a warm welcome to those families new to our community and a special greeting to our Junior Kindergarten children who are beginning their school journey. I hope that everyone has had an opportunity to relax and to enjoy some time with family and friends. The smiles on the children’s faces are a true reflection of the sense of excitement and contentment the students have in returning to school. Our school has been buzzing with activity as our staff has been preparing for what promises to be another memorable school year. I would like to thank our staff and secretaries for all they have done to welcome our students and their families. A special thank you to Mr. Thompson and Mr. Muniz who worked very hard this summer to make our school a clean and safe environment. St. Luke School is an active school that relies on cooperation and teamwork. We are blessed to have a devoted School Council and Parish Team. In partnership, our staff, parents, students, and parish continue to embrace activities that bring members of our school community together. These activities respect everyone, celebrate diversity and acknowledge that the Lord’s presence is evident in all we do together. I strongly Principal’s Message continued ... encourage this cooperative partnership between home, school and parish to promote a positive learning experience for all students. At the bell students are to enter the school by their assigned door. Students are not to enter the school by the front doors, unless arriving late. Students arriving late must report to the office. Parents are reminded that dismissal time is 3:00 p.m. In order to ensure that your child is safely dismissed we request that dismissal routines remain consistent and don’t change on a daily basis. If you are picking up your child at a time other than dismissal, we ask that you sign him/her out at the office. In cases, where someone else is to pick up your child, please provide the classroom teacher with a note or inform the office. Arrangements will be made for your child to meet you at the office. Outside supervision of students begins at 8:15 a.m. Please do not drop-off your children before this time. STUDENT ABSENCES Attendance Line: 905-274– 2760 PRESS #1 As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days your child is absent. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. Please provide us with your child’s full name, grade level, teacher’s name and reason for absence, when leaving a message. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. Please continue to call each day that your child is absent. When your child returns to school, please provide the teacher with a note regarding the specific reason for the absence. SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE SCHOOL The safety and security of all children in our care is one of our prime concerns. We are asking all visitors to the school, including parents, to enter through the front door. This will allow us to welcome you. We will also ask you to sign in and wear a visitor’s tag while you are in the building. To most students in our school you are a stranger. These procedures helps us to ensure that students and staff know you are a welcomed guest/volunteer in our school. As a reminder, we are now required to keep all outside doors locked, including the front doors. The only access point will be via the front doors. Please be patient as there will be times when Mrs. DiMauro and Mrs. Lister will need to be away from their desks and may not be able to admit you in as soon as you press the buzzer. Messages and drop-offs will be handled through the office. STUDENT AGENDAS A very special “thank you” to the School Council who have, once again, purchased agendas for all students in grades 1 to 8. The agenda is used daily to help assist your child with organization and time management skills. It is also an effective tool used to keep parents/guardians informed on what is happening in class and in the school. The Virtues program and our Catholic Code of Conduct are outlined in the agenda and provided for your to review with your child. HOMEWORK POLICY In November 2008, a Dufferin-Peel homework policy (Kindergarten to Grade 12) was adopted to foster consistency across the Board in this area. Please refer to your child’s school agenda for information about the homework policy. The homework policy may also be viewed at: www.dpcdsb.org/homework STUDENT INSURANCE COVERAGE As required by the Education Act and the Ministry of Education, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents/ guardians with information about cost-effective student accident insurance coverage via student carrier. Although enrolment is voluntary, the Board encourages families to take advantage of this inexpensive insurance coverage, especially if their child/children participate in sports, excursions/field trips, or if you do not have dental insurance coverage. Enrolment is required in writing. There are two options for enrolment: 1. Complete the traditional form sent home by the school and mail it in. OR 2. Photocopy the form and fax it to Reliable Life at 1-905-7211 or 1-800-463-KIDS (5437). Parents/guardians alone have the right to insure their child/children. Allergen Aware School As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that St. Luke School is an ‘allergen aware school.’ There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and lifethreatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut products and/or milk products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life-threatening reactions. Although this may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in ensuring our environment is safe for all. Further to this, as part of “Sabrina’s Law,” we are no longer permitted to allow treats for sharing with other students. In order to respect the caution required for bringing food into the school, parents are asked to use alternate methods to recognize birthdays and special occasions. This could be in the form of a book donated to the class in your child’s name or a non-edible treat (i.e., pencil, sticker Storage and Administration of Medication Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually for any student who requires medication to be administered at school. If your child requires medication please have the necessary forms completed and return them, along with any medication, to the office as soon as possible. Please be reminded that children are not allowed to keep any medication in their desk, backpack or classroom (with the expection of an epi-pen in the case of severe allergies). All dispensing of medication requires medical permission and medication must be stored in the office. Custody of Children We are best able to serve and protect students when we are made aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights and other special instructions. If legal custody matters affect your family, please ensure that our office staff and classroom teachers are aware of any custodial arrangements that may affect your child during school hours. Volunteers Criminal Reference Check Volunteers play an important part in the life of any school community. At the school level, they help to enhance the learning opportunities available to students. They can make a difference in the academic life of a student. They assist students with reading, writing, reinforcement, educational games and in other activities that help to improve a specific needs area. If you are interested in contributing as a volunteer, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Any school volunteers who will come into regular contact with students are required to produce a Criminal Reference Check obtained through Peel Regional Police. If you have already submitted one to the school a Criminal Offence Declaration must be completed yearly prior to commencing any volunteer work at St. Luke School. Copies of application forms are available in the office. Please note: Recent legislation requires that Criminal Reference Checks be submitted within 90 days of the volunteer activity. This includes volunteering on school trips. BUS TRANSPORTATION BUS SAFETY EXPECTATIONS Students eligibility for bus transportation is determined by the following grade level and distance criteria: JK to Grade 1 1.0 km or more Grades 2 to 4 1.6 km or more Grades 5 to 8 2.0 km or more … from their designated school of attendance. Bus stops have been posted at the front of the school and parents/guardians are reminded to regularly check the stopr website for any changes to timing or stops that may occur. Students must adhere to safe and considerate behaviour while travelling to and from school and follow the expectations outlined on this page. Parents may apply for a “courtesy seat” if their child has been designated “ineligible” according to the criteria listed above. If empty seats on buses permit room for riders in addition to designated bus students, parents who have applied for a courtesy seat will be notified. Students who travel to school by bus must adhere to the rules for their own safety. Students shall: Remain seated at all times when the bus is in motion. Keep all parts of their body inside the bus. Obey the instructions of the bus driver. Avoid excess noise and rowdiness, which may distract the driver and thus endanger all students on the bus. Refrain from throwing objects out the bus window. Be prepared to pay for any deliberate damage to the bus and/or its equipment and furnishings. All students who receive a Bus Discipline Form (pink slip) from the school bus driver will have a meeting with the Principal or VicePrincipal. Second “Bus Discipline Form” results in a phone call home to parents. A third “Bus Discipline Form” may result in a suspension of bus privileges. Students may be suspended from the bus immediately for serious offences Permission to ride under the courtesy seat policy is provided under the following conditions: The youngest students who live farthest away are considered first Riders must use an existing stop—no NEW stops will be added. Requests are only valid for the current school year and are dependent on availability. Courtesy seats may be withdrawn at any time as they are subject to compliance with behaviour expectations and changes made by the transportation department (e.g., size of bus, change in route, seats available to DP riders). Bussing Questions & Concerns STOPR (Student Transportation of Peel Region) deals with all bussing issues on behalf of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Important: Please have your child's OEN (Ontario Education Number) ready when calling. STOPR will not be able to give out student information without it. You can find the OEN number on your child’s most recent report card. Telephone: Transportation EAST 905-890-6000 Special Education Transportation: 905-890-6362 Website: businfo.stopr.ca This website provides information about pick-up and drop-off times for specific bus stop locations and up-to-date delay and inclement weather cancellation information. It offers parents specific information such as whether their child is eligible for transportation. Please note: Transportation operations prioritizes stranded students (eligible students with no bussing arrangements) and bus run and route adjustments (timing and runs) ahead of stop adjustments requests. Notifications of stop of adjustments will occur in early October. NEW SCHOOL ACCESS PROTOCOL: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FRONT DOORS LOCKED Under the province’s Safe School Welcome Program, out school received a grant that provides for the installation of a front door speaker/buzzer/video monitoring system. The installation of this system allows us to proactively enhance the safety and security of students and staff by locking the front doors after classes begin. This change in access to our school requires a new access protocol that applies to all visitors, including parents and guardians. The new system has now been installed and activated. Visitors may gain entrance by pressing the buzzer mounted on the wall to the right of the front door. The buzzer activates a twoway speaker and camera system. Office staff will then be able to determine who is at the door, by observing on a video monitor. This will enable better regulation of visitor access to the school. The co-operation and understanding of parents/guardians will be an important factor in the success of our new protocol. In this regard we respectfully request that parents/guardians: assist their children in arriving in time to enter the building with their classmates send lunch with your child in the morning to limit front door traffic during lunch time. limit visits to the school during the daytime to protect instructional time and reduce interruptions. STUDENT EMERGENCY INFORMATION Please ensure all Student Emergency Information package forms are accurate and up to date. All forms need to be returned to school as soon as possible, even if there are no corrections required. It is crucial that we have accurate phone numbers and contact persons in the event of an emergency. KISS ‘N RIDE The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is now on TWITTER! For the latest Board news and information FOLLOW US ON Twitter @DPCDSBSchools TREASURES / PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES In the interest of the safety of our children, please use the Kiss ’N Ride to drop off and pick up your child/children. Please be mindful of your speed as you enter and exit school property. When picking up at the end of the day, please do not leave your car. Your child must meet you in the Kiss ’N Ride area. We are still in need of volunteers to assist with helping things to run smoothly in the Kiss ’N Ride area. If you are available to assist us, please call the school. Valuables such as cameras, cell phones, iPods, electronic games should not be brought to school. It is Board policy that all Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) must be kept out of sight, turned off and not used within the school premises during school sanctioned activities such as retreats, field trips, sports events, etc. If you require your child to have a cell phone, it must be kept out of sight and not be used on school property. Other items of importance such as trading cards and money should be kept at home. The school does not accept responsibility for the above. It is recommended that all personal items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name. EMERGENCY EVACUATION If an emergency required the total evacuation of the school, students and teachers would walk to: Tecumseh Public School 1480 Chriseden Drive, Mississauga, ON, L5H 1V4 An emergency may affect more than one neighbourhood. Parents will be informed as soon as possible as to the safety and whereabouts of their children. We have a detailed fire safety plan and lockdown procedures which will be practiced several times over the course of the school year. A reminder students must wear shoes in the school building at all times. Please ensure that your child has an indoor pair of shoes at school. If an alarm goes off, students will not be permitted to put on shoes, coats, hats, etc. Their safety is our first priority. Message from David Amaral, Superintendent of Education September 3, 2013 Dear Families: Welcome back to what promises to be another exciting academic year filled with opportunities for learning within the context of our Catholic Faith! A special welcome to all of our students who may be joining our Mississauga South Family of Schools, and, in particular, to our Junior Kindergarten students who are beginning their journey in learning in their Catholic School. It is my honour to have been called to serve this Family of Schools as Superintendent. I wish to thank all of the Administrators, teachers and Board Staff who have made me feel so welcome! The Mississauga South Family of Schools is a very active and vibrant Family of Schools where the love of Christ can be found in our hallways, our classrooms and in our daily endeavors. Jesus is indeed the reason for our schools; He is the unseen but ever present teacher in our classrooms. He is the model of our faculty and the inspiration of our students. We will continue to celebrate the gift of Catholic Education this year within the theme of Catholic Education Week, “Serving in the Love of Christ”. The Family consists of 22 elementary schools and 4 secondary schools, all of which are served by extremely dedicated Administrators, teachers and support staff who put the needs of every child first and truly believe in the potential of each and every child. 8 parishes support our schools’ liturgical plans, working in partnership with teachers and students to provide spiritual nourishment and development of our students and their teachers. Furthermore, our school communities are privileged to be served by 4 dedicated trustees: Mario Pascucci (chair of the board, Wards 1 and 3), Sharon Hobin (Wards 2 and 8), Peter Ferreira (Wards 6 and 11) and Bruno Iannicca (Ward 7), each of whom brings with them a wealth of experience and a relentless passion for Catholic Education and the success of all students. The education of any child is indeed a co-operative endeavor. As parents, you are requested to be part of your child’s education. Research has indicated that there is indeed a correlation between parental involvement and student learning, achievement and well being. You are encouraged to ask questions about your child’s learning and to work collaboratively with your child’s teacher and school to ensure that your child is receiving the highest quality Catholic Education. For over 170 years, Catholic Schools in Ontario have been producing quality young men and women… young men and women who are not only solid academically but well rounded citizens who have contributed positively to our society, both locally and on a global scale. It is my hope that we all can reflect at what an awesome opportunity we have been given in the ability to learn in a Catholic school and to continue to advocate for this right. I wish you, the families within the Mississauga South Family of Schools, a very successful and productive year full of wonder and learning and witnessing the love our Lord has for us. Our vocation in providing your child with the highest quality Catholic Education is a privilege and one we hold very dear; it is indeed a sacred trust. David Amaral Superintendent of Education Mississauga South Family of School From Your Catholic School Trustee Sharon Hobin Welcome back! Summer seems too short. As we begin another school year we ask God to bless all of our students, parents, teachers, administrators, senior staff and all employees of Dufferin-Peel as well as the Board of Trustees. I pray that this will be a successful year for all. I would like to welcome all new Mississauga South staff and a special welcome to our new superintendent, David Amaral. We have many changes in our schools in terms of leadership. I am very pleased and proud to be working with such gifted Catholic leaders and I know you will feel the same. We are also very blessed to have so many wonderful priests and pastoral teams who continue to provide support, school Masses and sacraments for our schools. Many of our priests will come into the schools to celebrate Mass as well as visit our classes. I am most appreciative to all of them. A special welcome to our Kindergarten students. Some of you will be in our Full Day Learning program. We know that this may be an anxious time for students and parents who are just entering Dufferin-Peel but we want to reassure you that a Catholic education is filled with opportunity, positive experiences and fun all wrapped in the loving Word of God. As ever, the school year will fly by. I know you may not be feeling that way now but believe me it is true. To our grade eight students…..you made it! You are finally the senior students in the school. Take leadership roles and be positive examples to your fellow students who are looking to you. To those of you who are joining us for Extended French or our Gifted program, please know that you are most welcome and we are very happy to have you join your new school communities. I wish our Mississauga South staff God’s blessings as they move forward this year. I appreciate their time and talent and especially their donation of treasured volunteer hours for extracurricular activities. Parents, please support and join your Catholic School Council. It is a great opportunity for input and better understanding of what is happening in education both locally and provincially. Dear Lord, send your spirit upon us and fill us with wisdom, patience, perseverance and kindness. I wish you all the best and may the good Lord always hold you in the palm of His hand.
