We wait in joyful hope for the Nativity of Jesus, our Lord. The staff and students of St. Francis of Assisi School will enter into the spirit of the season by preparing to help those in the community who require our assistance. As a school community we have many special activities planned for the season of Advent; we know that small acts of kindness can have a big impact and can help to make a difference in the lives of others. These special activities also help to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. Our Family Advent Mass will be held on Thursday, December 3rd at 9:00a.m. at the Church. Parents and family are welcome to join us in celebrating the season of hope and preparation for our Lord, Jesus Christ. We hope to see many parents, family and friends at the Mass. The holidays are a time of year to be with family and friends, a time to rejoice and give thanks for our many blessings. On behalf of the staff of St. Francis of Assisi School, may you and your family have a peaceful and joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year! ADVENT PRAYER Heavenly Father, during Advent, may we remember the greatest gift ever given: Your only Son, Jesus Christ. Fill our hearts with joy day by day as we think of our Savior putting aside His heavenly glory and coming among us. As a newborn, only a stable roof sheltered Him and ordinary, impoverished parents cared for Him. Your angels couldn’t contain themselves, but broke into the quiet night-watch of a group of humble shepherds. The heavenly messengers proclaimed the glorious news of the Savior who would pay the price for our sins, the sign of Your goodwill to all men, and Your desire for peace on earth. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, may we grow in understanding and wonder of His birth. By Christmas day, may our hearts overflow with rejoicing and thanksgiving. Let our gratitude overflow to each person we meet by demonstrating the peace and goodwill in our hearts -- not just at this joyful season but all year long. VIRTUE OF THE MONTH Yours sincerely, Father Bernard Vellozo Mrs. Donaghue and Ms. Ragozzino School Council Chair Mrs. S. Perrotta Mrs. O. Steele St. Francis of Assisi is now on Twitter! For the latest school information, follow us @DPAssisi In the month of December we will celebrate the virtue of Hope. God helps us to keep on working for a more peaceful world even when we feel discouraged. People of Hope, keep up a positive attitude, can bounce back from tough situations, set and stick to their goals and know that Jesus will help us. SCHOOL NEWS FAMILY ADVENT MASS Our Family Advent Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Thurs. Dec. 3rd at 9:00 a.m. Please note this date on your calendars. It is a wonderful way to capture the “true meaning” of Christmas with your family. This year families have had the opportunity to sponsor a family in need in our community during the holiday season. Christmas morning is a happy time for so many of us and there is nothing better than giving a gift to someone else. Thank you to all for helping us make every family’s Christmas morning a happy and joyful one. We are still collecting gift certificates for food (Metro, WalMart, No Frills, Metro) to add to our Christmas gift baskets. Please call Mrs. Franke at 905-822-3183 for more information. A toy can put a smile on a child’s face this Christmas! We are asking for unwrapped donations of gifts for adults and for children of all ages. We are gratefully accepting donations of new toys, games, sports equipment, DVDs and books, gift cards, food cards, certificates for restaurants, hair salons and family activities. NEWSLETTER INSERTS Letter from Trustee Sharon Hobin Bus Cancellations/School Closing due to Bad Weather Info. Math @ Home Volume 3 Parent Evening To Support the Transition of Student with Differing Abilities into Kindergarten Information Session DRY FEET, DRY CLOTHING Colder weather is upon us! Please ensure that your child comes to school prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. All children should have hats, scarves, gloves, warm coats and boots. As the rainy season gives way to slush and snow, all students are reminded to bring an extra pair of shoes to wear indoors during the winter months. Fire regulations dictate that all students must have footwear on at all times. In anticipation of a cold and snowy winter, we would also like to advise parents of children in the primary grades to send an extra set of clothes (track pants, sweatshirts, socks, underwear) to school in January. These clothes will be kept at the school to be used when the child is wet from playing in the snow. INDOOR RECESS REQUESTS Drop off non-perishable food items to the school. What can you bring? Canned goods (soup, stews, fruit, meat or vegetables), pasta sauces, pasta, macaroni & cheese, crackers, jam, cheese spread, mustard, relish, ketchup, tuna, salmon, beans, rice, cereals, powdered milk, sugar, flour, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, bottled juices, fruit cups. We are accepting food donations until December 11th . In the colder weather we often receive requests to allow children to remain indoors when they have a cold, flu, etc. Please note that we cannot comply with these requests, as we have neither the facilities nor the staff to supervise these students. If you feel your child is not well enough to go outside, it would be best to keep your child at home. REMEMBER: Health officials indicate that fresh air is beneficial, as long as students are dressed appropriately. COLD WEATHER Children will be kept in at recess if the wind chill equivalent temperature is between the range of -20 and -25 degrees Celsius or lower. This is in accordance with the policy of the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board. We will, of course, monitor the weather situation (such as wind chill and wind speed) on a daily basis. The safety of our students is always of utmost concern. We obtain our weather information from the Environment Canada Weather Information Line and follow School Board guidelines. With the exception of these occasions, all children will go out for recess and the lunch break. WHAT IS SEASONAL INFLUENZA? Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by Influenza Viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year. The flu is spread easily through coughing, sneezing or through touching contaminated surfaces or objects like unwashed hands, toys and eating utensils. BE SMART, GET A HEAD START Head lice are always present in the community. By checking your child’s head once a week for head lice, you will catch it early and treat it before it has a chance to spread. Should you suspect that your child(ren) have head lice, please notify the school. Remember, an infestation of lice is not a reflection on the cleanliness of your child. In fact, students with appropriate hygiene habits are as susceptible to lice as any other group. A reminder to all to refrain from sharing hats at any time, but especially during the winter months. The treatment for pediculosis is simple. Specially medicated shampoo or cream rise is available from your pharmacist. Carefully follow the manufacturer’s directions and remove all nits from the hair. Any infected student will need to be checked before re-entry to class. Thank you in advance for your co-operation. Peel Health (www.peelregion.ca/health/) is available to provide advice to parents, school staff and students about treatment and prevention. They can be contacted at (905) 7917800. During Advent, the Church prepares for the birth of our Saviour. As we prepare externally by decorating our homes and putting out our Christmas trees, we are also invited to prepare spiritually by meditating on the wonderful mystery of God's love for us. The Gospel of John informs us that God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life. (3:16) May our gratitude for God's gift of love be reflected in the way we live; through our daily prayers, our participation in the Sacraments of the Church and our charity to all those God has placed in our lives. She will become our Director on January 15, 2016. As you know our current Director John Kostoff will be retiring in the New Year. John has devoted many years as a teacher, superintendent, Associate Director and Director of Education for Dufferin-Peel. It is with much gratitude that we wish him well. Ms. Mazzorato has been a teacher, principal, superintendent, and spent a few years working with the Ministry of Education in the EQAO department. She brings to us much enthusiasm, a true belief in Catholic education and a goal to provide the best opportunities for each student. Ms. Mazzorato believes “positive relationships imbued with trust, confidence and competency increases the likelihood that Dufferin-Peel will continue to be a vibrant board as evidenced through increased student achievement and well-being, system morale and well-being, growth and leadership of everyone in the organization and the confidence of parents, our partners in Catholic education, parishes, and the public at large. Each and every child deserves our collective commitment to help them succeed in all aspects of their growth, well-being and development.” Thank you to all of our schools for the heartwarming tributes to our veterans on November 11th. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our veterans of all wars and conflicts. We are blessed to live in this great country and with the events of the last weeks we continue to value freedom and resolve to always stand for and protect that freedom. My parents were veterans of World War II. So I wear my poppy with great pride and in remembrance of them. Thank you to all of our administrators and teachers for their hard work. It shows again and again and as ever, in our 2015 EQAO scores. And while we can always improve we know that we can be assured that our students are reaching the goals that have been set for and by us. Each school will continue to develop their own plans for improvement. Results can be found on our Dufferin-Peel web site. During this Advent season many of our schools will be taking part in Advent Masses, liturgies, concerts, breakfasts with Santa and many other activities. I love this time of year in my schools and I encourage you to attend one or more of these Masses and events. These touching events will bring the true meaning of Christmas to the forefront in your minds and hearts. Please consult the Dufferin-Peel web site for minutes of meetings, meeting schedules, current events, news and more. The web address is www.dpcdsb.org I wish you a happy and blessed Christmas and the very best for 2016. May God continue to bless us and to change hearts from evil to good, bringing peace to all. Volume 3 December Geometry Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth The ability to identify and describe shapes, sizes, positions, directions, and movement is important in many work situations, such as construction and design, as well as in creating and understanding art. Becoming familiar with shapes and spatial relationships in their environment will help children grasp the principles of geometry in later grades. What do we mean by “mindset”? Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have for ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our behavior and influence our responses to daily events. - Dr. Robert Brooks Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset: Tip # 3. Set Appropriately High Expectations and Provide Support Web Resource: (Intermediate Level) www.wiredmath.ca Expectations should focus on habits, effort, and growth, not grades. Provide your child with other supports (extra help, additional resources). Don’t assume that “you could do it easily if you just tried harder.” Family Math Activity K – 3: There are many ways to Big Ideas: represent a given shape. Use 20 toothpicks to make 3 shapes. None of the shapes can use the same number of toothpicks. Talk to your child about the shapes they made. What are the names of the shapes you made? Why did you decide that those would be good shapes to make? Family Math Activity 4-6: Big Idea: There are many ways to represent a given shape. We invite you to explore these dynamic interactive games with your child: http://www.kidsmathgamesonline.com/geometry/shapes. html (geometric properties) http://www.kidsmathgamesonline.com/geometry/interac tiveshapes.html (spatial awareness) http://www.kidsmathgamesonline.com/geometry.html (variety of geometry games) Grades 7 & 8: Continuing the Conversation about Financial Literacy! Let’s discuss some factors affecting “Money Decisions”… Ask your child to keep a log for one week of all the times, instances, or circumstances that he/she has an encounter with money (e.g., a bus ride, buying gum at a store, going to the bank or ATM, buying an app or music). Ask your child to make a list of all the ways in which money enters into his/her daily life. Discuss with your child his/her money encounters (e.g., what was the total value of your money encounters?) “God has also given each of us different gifts to use.” Romans 12: 6-8 INFORMATION SESSION Parent Evening to Support the Transition of Children with Differing Abilities into KINDERGARTEN Including: Vision, Hearing, Speech, Autism, Physical/Medical and/or Developmental Delays in the cognitive and/or motor areas.
