VOCABULARY: Blending: technique of shading through smooth, gradual application of dark value. Chiaroscuro: method of arranging light shadow in two-dimensional art to create the illusion of three-dimensional form. This technique was introduced by Italian artists during the Renaissance and used widely by Baroque artists. Modeling: the forming of a three-dimensional form in a soft substance such as clay or wax. Also, the effect of light falling on a three-dimensional form, delineating its form by means of shadow and light. Also, representing this three-dimensionality of forms in a painting by means of light and dark values. Value: an element of design that relates to the lightness and darkness of a color or tone. PROCEDURE: do several quick sketches of your hand choose five (5) different poses and enlarge onto good paper (hands should be approximately life-size) place your hands in a well balanced composition finish in pencil using a full range of values MATERIALS: sketchbook 12” x 18” white drawing paper or larger (depending on the size of your hands) assortment of drawing pencils eraser
