UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA SYSTEM Student Advisory Council (SAC) A RESOLUTION OPPOSING HOUSE BILL 413 WHEREAS, the Student Advisory Council for the University of Louisiana System is comprised of the Presidents of the Student Government Associations of the eight system universities; and WHEREAS, there is deep concern about the safety and welfare of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to our campuses; and WHEREAS, House Bill 413, which would allow for licensed, concealed weapons on college campuses has been filed during the 2011 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature; and WHEREAS, this legislation increases the risk for gun-related violence on college campuses and the surrounding communities; and WHEREAS, the knowledge that individuals – students, faculty, and/or staff – could be carrying concealed firearms would increase tension within the campus environment; and WHEREAS, the passage of House Bill 413 would have an adverse effect on the recruitment and retention of students; and WHEREAS, in light of the current issues involving funding for higher education, we urge our legislators to focus on the overall needs of the state's colleges and universities, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Student Advisory Council for the University of Louisiana System, strongly oppose House Bill 413 and urge the Legislature of the State of Louisiana to oppose House Bill 413.
