Welcome!
This is your SLMS Band Handbook and Supplementary Materials. This
book contains materials pertaining to student responsibilities, expectations,
schedule overview, SmartMusic, grading, home practice, instrument storage
(care & maintenance), concert performances, concert attire, concert seating,
performance schedule, procedures and supplementary band materials.
Please refer to your handbook for any questions.

Student Responsibilities and Expectations
1. All students must be ready (on time) for class with their instruments, pencils, method books and music.
2. Demonstrate proper behavior during class and rehearsal.
3. Practice appropriate material at home to be prepared for the next class/rehearsal. Here
at Springton, I rely heavily on SmartMusic software. I highly encourage you to purchase
a yearly subscription to SmartMusic which we will discuss in a later chapter of the book.
4. Attend all performances in proper attire (depending on the venue)
5. Represent Springton Lake with pride and class.
6. Respect other people, their property, and the school’s property at all times.

Each student signed up for full time band will have band 3 times a cycle. Each student signed
up for band/chorus or band/orchestra will have band two times a cycle. In sectional rehearsals,
days other than Day 7, students will focus on the fundamentals of playing their regular instrument. On Day 7, all students will come together for a double period rehearsal.
Full-Time Band Students
Example: Full time flute students in 6th grade will have group lessons on day 1 and 4. On Day 7,
flute students will have a full band rehearsal for both special periods in the school day.
Dual-Ensemble Students
Students doing two ensembles will have band on one lesson day, then the other ensemble on
the other lesson day. On Day 7, those students will attend both rehearsals for 1 special period
each.

Materials
Students will need to purchase a method book:
6th Grade-Standard of Excellence Book 1 (Red Cover)
7th Grade-Standard of Excellence Book 2 (Blue Cover)
8th Grade-Standard of Excellence Book 3 (Green Cover)
SmartMusic software - Optional but Highly Recommended, see SmartMusic handout for
more information.
Instrument
Pencil
Instrument and Folder Storage
All students will be assigned a locker and folder slot. Students are expected to take care of
their belongings. It is up to the student to routinely bring the instrument home for practice. It is
also the student’s responsibility to handle instrumental returns/maintenance with the music
store. The school is not responsible for student rentals. We ask that you follow the policies in
your rental contract.
Concerts/Performances
All bands perform at least twice a school year. All performances are mandatory. This is a major
part of the grade, and your absence will affect the band’s overall performance. Students may
miss a performance for reasons such as illness, family obligations, and travel. It is up to the discretion of the director to excuse any absence.
Concert Attire
Standard concert attire is the red polo shirt with black dress bottoms (pants or skirt). Order
forms for the red polo shirts will be distributed at the beginning of the school year.

records can be included in my
gradebook. A software subscription (not required, but HIGHLY
recommended) can be purchased. Please refer to the
SmartMusic handout for further
details.
• Content Standards will be taken
from the Standard of Excellence
Book, concert music and from
this handbook.
• Students will be introduced to
content standards as they are
introduced in the Standard of Excellence for Band, in the concert
music as well as in this handbook.
• Student achievement of content standards will be
measured through performance on his/her chosen instrument through assignments posted and collected
through SmartMusic. A rubric will be used to measure student achievement of content standards.
• Parents will be able to track student progress online
by visiting the SmartMusic online gradebook (SmartMusic software not required to visit gradebook). The
website is gradebook.smartmusic.com. Parents will
need their child’s login information in order to view progress. Grades will be uploaded to the school district’s
HAC closer to the end of the marking period.

Brass Fingerings by Design
The fingerings, and alternate fingerings, on the brass instrument can be learned just by
looking at the design of the instrument. This method can also be applied to the trombone.
