Here are some things you need to know to help
you child learn their addition fact quickly.
Parts of an addition problem.
5+7=12
The numbers next to the addition symbol are called addends.
The answer to an addition problem is called the sum.
In the above example, 5 and 7 are addends and 12 is the sum.
Turn-around Facts
Facts that have the same addends in a different order.
5 + 7 = 12
and
7 + 5 = 12
are turn-around facts.
The addition facts are grouped into several groups
based on the types of addends they have and how
they are solved.
ZEROS
DefinedTo solveExample-
These are facts that have a zero as one of the addends.
The sum is the other addend.
5+0=?
One addend is zero, so the sum is the other addend, 5.
5+0=5
COUNTING ON
DefinedTo solveExample-
Exceptions-
These facts are ones that have 1, 2, or 3 as one of the addends.
Put the bigger addend in your fist, and COUNT ON using the fingers on
the same hand.
6+3=?
Make a fist and say “6”. Then count on by lifting fingers saying…
“7, 8, 9”. 6 + 3 = 9.
9 + 1=
8+2=
7+3=
The above and their turnaround facts are considered EQUALS TEN facts.
2+3=
3+4=
The above and their turnaround facts are considered NEAR DOUBLES
facts.
DOUBLES
DefinedTo solveExample-
Facts where the addends are the same
Memorize these answers.
5 + 5 = 10
NEAR DOUBLES
DefinedTo solveExample-
Exceptions-
Facts where the addends are sequential numbers and their turn-around
facts.
Double the smaller number and add one.
6+5=?
or
5+6=?
5 doubled (5+5) is 10. Add one… 11
6 + 5 = 11
0 + 1= 1
This fact and its turnaround fact are considered
ZEROS facts
1+2=3
This fact is and its turn-around fact are considered
COUNTING ON facts
ADDING NINE
DefinedTo solveExample-
Facts that have a nine as an addend
Make the “other” number one less and put a ten in front.
(The “other” number is the addend that is not a nine)
6+9=?
The other number is 6.
Make it a 5.
Put a ten in front of it. 15.
6 + 9 = 15.
EQUALS TEN
DefinedTo solveExampleExceptions
Facts whose sums equal ten
Memorize
8 + 2=
7+3=
6+4=
9 + 1= is considered a COUNTING ON fact.
5 + 5= is considered a DOUBLES fact
TOUGHIES
Defined-
To solve-
Example-
These five facts and their turn-around facts.
4 + 7 = 11
5 + 7 = 12
4 + 8 = 12
5 + 8 = 13
6 + 8 = 14
Memorize, or use the same strategy as adding nine, only instead of making
the “other” number one less, make it TWO less for the facts with 8 as an
addend, or THREE less for the ones with 7.
5+8=?
Think, to make a ten, add two to 8, take two from 5, and put the ten in
front. Two less than 5 is 3, put a ten in front 13
5 + 8 = 13
