David Henley; player; 1980,81,82,83. Describe the proudest moments of your playing career. (Answer) My two proudest moments were in 1975, when my dad was the head coach and we won the regional championship over Paducah Tilghman to go to the Sweet 16 (I was the waterboy!). Also, making the two “winning” free throws in the 1983 semi-final game of the Sweet 16 over Owensboro High School. We were up 59-57 with 30 seconds to go. I got fouled, went to the free throw line for a one and bonus. I made both, which made the score 61-57. We won 61-59. Describe the most disappointing moments of your playing career. (Answer) Losing the semifinals of the regional tournament in 1982 to Ballard County and losing in the state championship game in 1983. Describe the funniest moments of your playing career (Answer) Just being around Coach Slone on a daily basis. He was tough, and very, very demanding. But some days, just out of the blue, he would do something or say something that was funny! But we were all too scared to laugh! He told one player (who was very tall) who had two rebounds in a particular game, “That’s only two more rebounds than a dead man got.” He also used to tell us, “God gave you an a** for two reasons, one to go to the bathroom (not exactly in those words), and two to block out with.” Describe the fondest moments of your playing career. (Answer) Basically growing up in the gym at the CCHS. I couldn’t believe the time we went to the gym after the tornado took off the roof. I was stunned, the Taj Mahal was in ruin! After school was out in the afternoon, going to watch the Comets practice. In the summers going to the Comet basketball camp. Riding the bus to games when I was a little kid. Sitting on the bench and getting towels and water for the boys. Shooting on the side goals during practice, and when my ball ricocheted out onto the floor, getting yelled-at by my dad. Pretty-much, from the time I was old enough to walk until I graduated high school, my life was spent in the gym between September and May. My whole life has been shaped/formed, to this day, by my time spent around Comet basketball. It’s been the foundation of everything I am today. As for playing, there are too many fond memories to list. Just the fact that I played at Carlisle County High School is a huge source of PRIDE for me. I love telling people I played basketball at Carlisle County. With that said, comes a respect from others that you cannot get from most places! What was the most amazing things you ever saw in a game? (Answer) 1981; Finals of the Tilghman Christmas Tournament. One second on the clock. Carlisle County and Ballard County tied (I forget the score at the time, but it was at the end of overtime). We had the ball out of bounds, 84 feet from our hoop. We called timeout, Coach Slone drew up the play we had worked on many times before in practice. I threw it the length of the court, Mike Tyler caught it, turned and scored! We won the game by two points. Also, at the end of the first quarter against Hickman County in 1982-83, Hickman County scored with about 1 or 2 seconds left. I grabbed the ball and stepped out of bounds, the horn went off. I went ahead and threw it the length of the floor, and it went in. It went in from 85 feet. Only problem, I was out of bounds and the horn had already sounded, so it didn’t count. In your own words, what has Comet basketball meant to you over the years? (Answer) I am an assistant principal and head basketball coach at Covington Holmes High School, in Covington, KY. In my office, hangs one of the posters of Comet Basketball with the Region 1 Championship teams on it. It is awesome. Everyone asks about it, and I proudly tell them, my dad was the b-team coach in ’71, he was the head coach in ’75, and I played on the ’83 team. It’s really hard to put into words what Comet basketball has meant to me over the years. It has honestly been the foundation of my life. The amount of pride with Comet Basketball is unmatched anywhere, and I am quick to point that out to anyone that will listen! We have been very successful here at Holmes with our basketball program. The same things I learned in the CCHS gym are the things I try to teach our players. Discipline, toughness, mental toughness, commitment, the list goes on, all the things I learned in the gym at CCHS, are the exact things we try to teach our kids and they are the things that have helped to make me successful. In your own words, what do you think Comet basketball has meant to the Carlisle County citizens over the years? (Answer) It’s a source of county pride. If you travel throughout the state, as I have been able to do, you mention that your from Carlisle County to anyone, and they’ll remember the basketball teams we’ve had! We have good people in Carlisle County and much to be proud of, but Comet Basketball is Number one! David Rambo; player; 1981,82,83. In your own words, what has Comet basketball meant to you over the years? (Answer) When I reflect back on the 1983 team the thing that stands out in my mind is how deep the talent was. Everyone that had a varsity uniform was a very good player. What made us so successful was the work ethic at practice. Coach Slone really pushed us hard and all the guys responded. We won 40 games that year, but those games were not won in front of the big crowds on game night, but rather in the practices well before, when no one was watching. The games we had in practice were much more competitive than many we had on the schedule. Tom Buchanan; Coach; 1969-70, 71,72,73,74 What was the best team that you coached? Why this team? (Answer) The 1970-71 team. This team had leadership, intelligence, size, ability, depth, dedication, great desire to win and they were family Who was the best all around player you ever coached? Why this player? (Answer) David Sams; Size, strength, shooting, rebounding, determination and a great team player. Who would be your best starting 5 that you ever coached? (2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center) Why these players? (Answer) I coached too many “Best” players to just name five. Many of them, on any given night, could have been the best. Who do you think would be the best starting 5 in the last 50 years? (2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center) Why these players? (Answer) I can’t name the best five, but I do know that Carlisle County has produced more players who rose to the occasion and preformed above their ability than any school in the first region. What was the best overall game (in your opinion) that was ever played while you were a coach? Describe the game. (Answer) The best game as a coach for me was against Symsonia in the St. Mary Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 27th, 1971, and most particularly the fourth quarter. The final score was 102-100. Jeff Bean, a senior guard for Symsonia, demonstrated the best shooting exhibition that I ever witnessed from a high school player (37 points total, 23 in fourth quarter alone, with no 3 point shot). I’m not sure if a record for most points in a quarter was set (45 by Symsonia, 27 by Carlisle, a total of 72, in an 8 minute quarter), but it would have to be right up there. What would be (in your opinion) the best game ever played overall in the last 50 years? Describe the game. (Answer) No doubt about it. The Carlisle County, Lexington Henry Clay game for the Kentucky State Championship in 1983. The Knights, though, turned in a lackluster performance in losing to the graduationriddled Carlisle five. Carlisle led at every quarter stop. The Comets were on top 9-7 at the end of the first quarter, 26-19 at halftime, 42-29 at the end of the third quarter and held the lead through the final period. Fouls cost the Bombers the game last Tuesday night as the Comets cashed in 18 free throws to the Bombers 5, to give the Comets their 13 point winning margin. Ballard got into trouble early into the game as they fouled time after time trying to double team big 6”8 Tyler, the Carlisle County pivot man. Tyler scored almost at will as he drove from a two man screen to shoot a short jump shot from about 10 foot out to give him 25 points for his evenings work. Johnny Glisson turned in a good job for the Bombers, if there was such a thing. John was consistent in his shooting, and did a good job against Tyler on the boards. He also took scoring honors for the night tallying 11 points for a losing cause.
