QUICK
FACTS
The program was
founded in 1923 as the
School of Journalism,
with about 10 students
and one professor who
was also the dean. The
first curriculum was
entirely newspaper
oriented.
Degrees offered:
• Degrees offered:
Bachelor of Arts
(B.A.) in Journalism
and Mass
Communications,
Master of Arts (M.A.)
• Master of Mass
Communication
(M.M.C.) and Doctor
of Philosophy in Mass
Communication
(Ph.D.)
For more than 50
years the school has
been fully accredited
by the Accrediting
Council in Education
in Journalism and
Mass Communications
(ACEJMC). The program
was most recently reaccredited in Spring
2011.
Student Services
The Office of Student Services is here for you. We are happy to
answer any questions you have concerning the course curriculum in
the School of Journalism and Mass Communications or the university
as a whole.
This publication is designed to give each undergraduate an overall
view of curriculum requirements in the school at the time of
matriculation. The final authority resides with the University Bulletin
for the 2015 - 2016 school year.
It is important for you to visit www.jour.sc.edu often, especially the
“Current Students” page to learn important information regarding
advisement, making appointments and dates to remember, such
as when to be advised for classes and when to apply for certain
courses.
General Information
Sequences and Majors
The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers the
Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications in the
following six areas:
Advertising
Mass
Communications
Theory
Electronic
Journalism
Journalism
Public
Relations
Visual
Communications
You will select one program of study and complete all requirements
in that program.
A minimum of 120 semester hours of credit is required for the
degree. A minimum of 40 to 49 hours will be needed to complete
the Carolina Core requirements, along with either a 12 hour cognate
or 18 hour minor. A minimum of 48 hours must be completed in
Journalism and Mass Communications. See the USC Undergraduate
Bulletin at www.sc.edu/bulletin for information concerning bulletin
requirements. The bulletin is a binding document for the year you
entered USC.
Undergraduate students have a maximum of eight years, inclusive
and continuous, in which to claim the rights of a specific bulletin. If
6
you are out of the USC system for more than three years, you must claim the bulletin in force at
the time of return and will be subject to its curricular requirements.
You are responsible for understanding the degree requirements in your major field. Any exceptions
to those requirements must be requested through a petition process.
You may receive only ONE degree from the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. There
is NO double major option within the SJMC. If you wish to earn a second baccalaureate degree
from the SJMC, you must complete separate degree requirements
which would require you to take repeated courses to receive the
proper credit.
Consult the “Carolina
Community — USC
Student Handbook and
Policy Guide” for more
information.
Academic Integrity and Professionalism
The School of Journalism and Mass Communications is a rigorous
academic program and a professional school, and professional
conduct is expected of you. Attendance regulations are set in each
class and penalties may be assigned if classes are missed. If you
cheat or plagiarize, you are subject to penalty as stated in the USC
policies, which govern these areas.

Transfer Credit
x
Coursework ineligible for transfer consideration
Courses
which
• Have grades below “C”
• Are occupational-type courses from
technical or similar schools
• Are remedial or developmental
courses from any institution
Will
NOT
transfer.
Coursework eligible for transfer consideration:
Non-journalism and mass communications courses:
If you transfer into the school from another institution, you will have your previous
work evaluated by the director of Student Services under terms of general USC policies
as well as policies of the school. Where possible USC equivalents will be determined
for academic courses from other institutions. If there is no equivalent, the director of
Student Services will determine appropriate placement in the curriculum.
Journalism and Mass Communications courses:
Courses from institutions accredited by the national journalism and mass
communications accrediting body, the ACEJMC, may be accepted either as the
equivalents of required major courses or as elective courses, up to a maximum of 15
semester hours. You must submit either a course description or syllabus to the Office of
Student Services. Student Services will forward it to the appropriate faculty member for
review.
Courses from other institutions not accredited by the ACEJMC may be accepted as
journalism and mass communications electives only, up to a maximum of 12 semester
hours. In some cases, you must take a competency examination to establish equivalency
(or “validate” the equivalent course). You can try to validate a course from your other
college or university only if you earned a “B” or better. The validation score must be
completed within one semester of transfer.
7
Transfer students: If you are transferring to the University of South Carolina you must demonstrate
foreign language skills by scoring appropriately on the proficiency test.
You need to demonstrate in one foreign language the ability to comprehend the topic and main
ideas in written and, with the exception of Latin and Ancient Greek, spoken texts on familiar
subjects. This ability can be demonstrated by achieving a score of 4 on a USC foreign language
test. Those failing to do so must satisfactorily complete equivalent study of foreign language at
USC through the 122 level.
Progression
Upper Division
Admission to this division is based upon:
-a minimum 2.50 cumulative USC and collegiate GPA
-completion of Journalism 101 and 291 with grades of “C” or higher
-completion of 60 or more semester hours
-completion of any foreign language requirement. (see foreign language section)
-formal selection of a minor or cognate by the end of freshman year (or 30 hours)
Lower Division
Lower Division students may be freshmen, sophomores and other students who have
not completed Upper Division entrance requirements. You may enroll in 200-, 300and 400-level journalism courses as long as you have met all prerequisites, which can
be found in the USC Undergraduate Bulletin. You will NOT be eligible to enroll in upper
division journalism and mass communications courses, which are defined as 500-level
courses.
You should declare a minor or cognate by the end of your freshman year, or by the time 30 hours
have been accumulated. You are also encouraged to complete all required core and foundation
classes in a timely manner. A list of university minors can be found at www.jour.sc.edu/cstudents/
index.html under “Resources.”
You will not be allowed to register for upper division journalism and mass communications courses
in the semester in which you are enrolled for your 60th hour, but will be allowed to do so as soon
as you are certified for upper division status.
Freshman students: All freshman students entering the University of South Carolina must take the
university’s proficiency test in foreign language. If you earn below a score of 4, you must take one
or more courses through the 122 level to meet the foreign language requirement.
Good Standing: If you maintain a USC and collegiate GPA of 2.50, you are considered in “good
standing” in the school.
Probation
If you do not maintain a USC and collegiate GPA of 2.50 you will be placed on academic probation
until your USC and collegiate GPA are 2.50 or higher. You will be permitted to remain in the
J-school while on probation for only one semester. You must meet all probationary requirements
during the semester that you are on probation. You will receive detailed instructions from the
Office of Student Services.
8
Suspension
If you fall below a 2.00 GPA you are in danger of being suspended by the university. A full
explanation of the university suspension policy is shown in the current USC Undergraduate
Bulletin. The University of South Carolina has a specific policy regarding suspension and
readmission.
Illness/Death in Family: In case of death of a family member or student illness of a week or
more in duration, the Student Affairs Office (777-4172) will write your professors and academic
adviser to alert them. This does not constitute an excused absence. Not all professors may request
appropriate proof to waive class attendance for excused absences, but some will. An appropriate
proof of illness is a signed doctor’s statement on letterhead. In the case of a death in the family,
proof is required in requests for an extenuating circumstance withdrawal.
Readmission
1. If you enrolled as a journalism and mass communications major, but missed a full semester
or more, you must apply for readmission to the university and the J-school. If you have lower
than a 2.50 USC and/or collegiate GPA, you are not eligible for readmission to the School of
Journalism and Mass Communications. Call (803) 777-7700 to contact the Admissions Office.
2. If you are suspended by the university, you may not return to the SJMC for the next full
semester or summer school (see Bulletin for details). While on suspension, students may not
attempt course work at any institution. You may subsequently apply for reinstatement to the
J-school only through a formal petition process. The petition process does not guarantee
readmission.
Course Load
1. The normal course load in a full semester (fall or spring) is 15 to 18 semester hours. You are
strongly advised not to attempt 18 hours until you have successfully completed your freshman
year. Additional hours beyond 18 will be approved only if you have a minimum 3.00 GPA on all
work completed during the previous full semester. If you want to take more than 18 hours of
coursework, you must make a request to the director of Student Services after your previous
semester final grades are on file in the Registrar’s Office.
2. To be considered a full-time student, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours.
3. Students may earn up to 16 hours in summer.
4. Most of our programs of study have an intensive experience in the first or last semester of
the senior year that demands a great deal of your time and attention. You should plan your
curriculum progression so you can graduate even if one of your final semesters is limited to a
maximum of 12 hours.
Advanced Standing
1. If you make satisfactory scores, as determined by the USC Testing Offices (803) 777-2780,
on Advanced Placement (AP) tests in high school you may receive credit.
2. Certain College Level Examination Program (CLEP) scores may also be accepted as credit,
as determined by the USC Testing Office.
3. You might also obtain credit by examination in areas where you may have competency.
This is done by paying a fee and making a satisfactory score on an examination. Generally,
you cannot place out of skills courses by using credit by exam. Also, you can have no prior
enrollment history in the same or a similar course. Come to the Office of Student Services
9
for the forms and instructions.
4. No credit is given for “life experience” and Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
Academic Honors
The SJMC has several honor societies that you may be invited to join. Kappa Tau Alpha is the
largest and most prestigious of the journalism and mass communications honor societies. Our
students are also eligible for Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honorary society for liberal arts
and sciences. A list detailing the courses that would qualify you for selection to Phi Beta Kappa
is compiled and maintained by the USC chapter for use in the selection process.
J-school Scholarships
Get scholarship information from Beverly Dominick at (803) 777-3347 or visit our website at
www.jour.sc.edu. Other scholarship information may be obtained from the USC Financial Aid
Office at (803) 777-8134.
Student Advisement
You may choose any adviser you deem appropriate. You will be notified of advisement in
October and February via the School of Journalism and Mass Communications’ website “Current
Students” section, Facebook, Twitter, the SJMC listserv and posters around the Coliseum.
Change of College
If you have changed to the SJMC from another program or campus, you may
attend orientation sessions or meet with an adviser after your records folder
is prepared. In most cases, it is necessary for regional campus students
to attend the School of Journalism and Mass Communications orientation
session.

Advisement Sessions
There are mandatory advisement sessions during the fall and spring semesters. You must
meet with your adviser to obtain approval needed to register for the next term(s). Advisement
appointments can be scheduled online at
www.sc.edu/advising/journalismandmasscommunications
You are advised for the spring term beginnng in October and for summer and fall terms
(including transient work to be done at other institutions) beginning in February.
You should always allow adequate time for advisement in case your preferred adviser is
unavailable. Many forms require not only the adviser’s signature, but signatures of the sequence
chair and the director or dean as well. Often, forms must be left with the Office of Student
Services to allow time for consideration of the request, and picked up at a later date. Be certain
there is enough time for necessary forms to be processed.
10
Transient Courses at Other Institutions
1. If you are a fully admitted journalism and mass communications student in good standing (i.e.,
not on probation or suspension) and have a USC and collegiate GPA of 2.0 or higher and wish to
take courses at other institutions, you must receive advance permission. A minimum grade of “C” is
required for a course to transfer. You may take no more than 18 hours as a transient student.
2. You must complete your last 30 hours in residence and should apply to take coursework
elsewhere before you attain senior standing (90 hours earned).
3. You should request transient information (i.e. course descriptions and scheduled offerings) from
the other institution before the advisement period. Permission should be obtained during the
regular advisement period.
4. Normally, journalism and mass communication courses may not be taken at non-USC
institutions.
5. The bulletin states that “credit...will not be accepted for transfer if the student has previously
been enrolled in an equivalent course in the university.”
6. The bulletin states “credit for other courses will be accepted only under the conditions that each
course has been approved in advance by the head of the department or the dean of the college.”
However, the J-school requires approval by your adviser, and the director of Student Services will
ask for the SJMC director’s consideration.
7. When transient permission forms have been approved and signed, you can register for the
course. When the coursework is completed, you must request that an official transcript be mailed
to:
Office of the Registrar
University of South Carolina
1244 Blossom St.
Columbia, SC 29208
Transcripts should NOT be handled by you, nor should
they be mailed to the School of Journalism and Mass
Communications. According to national accrediting
standards, if this occurs, the transcript will be considered
unofficial and invalid.
Records and Privacy
Student Records
The Office of Student Services maintains a records folder for each undergraduate student. This
folder contains transcripts, curriculum outline sheets and other material pertaining to the academic
status of the student. Curriculum outline sheets are updated after each term. It is required by
the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, that a valid picture ID is
required for a student to see his or her own folder.
Grades and Transcripts
Federal law states that neither the Office of Student Services nor the faculty may release
information about any student’s grades, performances or progression to anyone, including parents,
without written permission from you. The Registrar’s office has the responsibility for release of
such information. Copies of grades will not be given to anyone, even the student.
11
You can request an official copy of your transcript by calling the Office of the University Registrar
at (803) 777-5555, or visiting 1244 Blossom St. You can access your grades and print an unofficial
copy on Self Service Carolina. Please address your requests to the Office of the University
Registrar.
Change of Address
Any change of address must be reported in one of two ways:
• Access your personal information page on the Internet at vip.sc.edu
• Contact the Registrar’s Office via phone or in person.

Electives: You may be able to take 3-12 hours of electives. Physical Education (PEDU) or skills
courses and journalism courses may not be used for elective credit.
Major Requirements
All journalism and mass communications courses (JOUR) must be completed with a grade of
“C” or better. JOUR courses completed with grades of “D” or “F” will not be counted toward the
degree, and will affect your grade point average. Journalism and mass communications courses
may be repeated once. When a course has been satisfactorily completed, it may not be repeated.
Minor or Cognate
All students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications must complete an 18-hour
minor or a 12-hour cognate, intended to develop a coherent basic preparation in a second area of
study. Non-journalism and mass communications required courses which are used for your minor
or cognate will be replaced with courses selected from a comparable area of study, provided that
at least 65 credit hours of these courses are in the liberal arts and sciences, as defined by the
university.
For descriptions of specific minors, you can go to www.bulletin.sc.edu and click on programs A-Z.
A minor or cognate form must be completed by the end of your first year and be approved by the
School of Journalism and Mass Communications before you register for minor courses.
•
•
•
•
No journalism and mass communications courses may be included.
Minors or cognates should be approved by the end of freshman year.
Minors or cognates must be approved before you can advance to the Upper Division.
All minor and cognate courses must be passed with a grade of “C” or better.
A cognate is composed of four courses related to a common theme, allowing you to combine
approved classes that suit your program of study. No 100-level courses may be applied to the
cognate. At least 6 hours must be at the 300 level or higher. You will develop a cognate program
of study with your adviser.
If you do not have an approved minor or cognate on file, you might experience delays in
progression or graduation.
Prerequisites
It is important to remember that most journalism and mass communications courses have
prerequisites that provide essential background material for the next course and to ensure smooth
progression from lower to higher-level courses. It is solely YOUR responsibility to check the
Bulletin (not the Master Schedule, which contains only a partial listing at best) to be certain you
meet the prerequisites. If you don’t meet the prerequisites you may be administratively dropped
from the course, possibly after the last day to receive a grade of “W.”
13
Independent Study or Internship Credit
You must be in Upper Division prior to registering for contract courses in the SJMC. If you wish
to enroll, you should plan to meet the Upper Division requirements by turning in all requirements
early in the term before the contract course experience. See Upper Division section for more
information on requirements.
Jour 598 - Independent Study must be approved in advance by the faculty member, adviser,
sequence head and the Office of Student Services, and requires a contract form to be
completed before registration. You must take the approved form to the Registrar’s Office for
clearance and then register via Self Service Carolina.
Jour 597 - Internship must be approved in advance by the internship coordinator, sequence
head and the Office of Student Services. Enrollment in an Internship for credit requires a
contract form to be completed before registration. You must take the approved form to the
Registrar’s Office for clearance and then register via Self Service Carolina. Please go to www.
jour.sc.edu/cstudents and click on internships to check eligibility.
You may not enroll for independent study or internship credit in a semester other than the one
in which the experience occurs. You may not enroll for independent study or internship credit
for work already begun or completed. If you are taking independent study or internship for
credit during the summer, you must pay full tuition for the course and may do the work during
Summer I and Summer II.
Graduation
Submission of the Graduation Application
When you submit your graduation application during the first
two weeks of your last semester, we will identify any problems
and inform you of necessary corrections, if time allows. If you
are a third-year student, ask your adviser to do a “senior check”
before you register for each of your two last semesters. You will
be tentatively cleared or disapproved by the Registrar’s posted
date if complete forms are submitted on time. If you change your
schedule after having been tentatively cleared, you must notify
the Office of Student Services and be cleared again. You will be
cleared for final approval only after final grades are available
following the commencement ceremony. The Office of Student
Services will contact students who have barriers to graduation
and help them resolve those. If no resolution is possible within
the university’s deadline, the application must be disapproved.
Disapproval and Reapplication
If your first application is not approved, you may file a second
application before completing the requirements as long as you
are concurrently enrolled in the necessary courses. However,
before a third graduation application may be filed, all graduation
requirements must be successfully completed.
General Guidelines
In addition to meeting all
course requirements for the
degree, you must:
a. Have a minimum USC and
collegiate GPA of 2.50.
b. Have a grade of “C” or
better in all journalism and
mass communications courses
(with a maximum of two
attempts for each course).
c. Have a grade of “C” or
better in all minor and cognate

d. formally apply for
graduation during the first two
weeks of the term in which
you expect to complete all
requirements. Applications
are available in the Student
Services Office.
