Ambrose and Ermangarde are hoping the cash prize will persuade Horace to allow his niece to marry her boyfriend. Cornelius and Irene, and Barnaby and Minnie also enter the competition because they cannot afford the lavish dinner they ordered. Unbeknownst to any of them, Dolly will be a guest judge in the competition; her special dinner guest is Horace Vandergelder. Once they leave the restaurant, Cornelius, Barnaby, Irene and Minnie go to Central Park for a stroll. Dolly leaves Horace alone at the restaurant and heads back to her home. The next morning, Horace finds out Cornelius and Barnaby quit as his store clerks and decide to open their own Hay and Feed Store (at the suggestion of Dolly). Ermangarde and Ambrose get married. Unsettled and confused by the recent days’ happenings, Horace becomes humbled and admits that his life is dull without Dolly. He agrees to make Cornelius a business partner and gives Barnaby Cornelius’ old job of head clerk. Dolly agrees to “never go away again” and the story ends. Dolly makes a living as a matchmaker (and various other jobs). She is currently looking for a wife for grumpy store owner Horace Vandergelder. Dolly, however, has every intention of marrying him herself when she visits him in Yonkers, NY. Ambrose Kemper, an artist, wants to marry Horace Vandergelder’s niece, Ermengarde. Horace does not think Ambrose can provide the ‘good life’ for his niece and so denies the marriage. Mr. Vandergelder leaves Yonkers to visit New York City to meet Irene Malloy in hopes of making her his wife. He leaves his two store clerks, Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker in charge of his store, Vandergelder’s Hay and Feed. While he is away, Cornelius and Barnaby close the store and travel to NYC following Dolly’s impromptu suggestion. They do not know Mr. Vandergelder will be in the same town that very same day. Irene Malloy owns a hat shop in NYC. Her assistant is Minnie Fay. At Irene’s hat shop, Cornelius and Barnaby almost get caught by Horace Vandergelder. Mrs. Levi directs him away and he heads to the 14th Street Parade. Wanting to make up for embarrassing Irene and Minnie, Cornelius and Barnaby take the pair to the prestigious Harmonia Gardens Restaurant, which they cannot afford.
