Required Materials and Supplies
A list of necessary tools and materials needed to
function in this class is attached to the syllabus.
Students are expected to have all necessary
materials needed for class when they arrive each
day. Failure to have the materials necessary to
work in class will result in the student being
marked absent.
Student Outcome Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should
be able to:

This course has a Service Learning Component
for the semester. Students enrolled in the course
will learn the previously stated objectives while
designing a project for a non-profit community
partner. This partner has selected a representative
to act as the client on the organization’s behalf.
Prior to project commencement, we will enter into a
Pro-Bono Design Agreement that both you and the
Community Partner Representative will sign. This is
a standard professional practice and is necessary
to maintain open communication and a solid
foundation for the project.
Student Responsibility --> You will be responsible
for assessing their needs, participating in class
critiques and completing the project based upon
the criteria provided to you in a Project Sheet.
Partner Responsibility --> Our Community Partner
Representative will be responsible for providing
accurate information about their project, attending
scheduled critiques, and providing constructive
feedback on your work.
Method of Evaluation --> You will be evaluated by
the Professor throughout the course of the project
based upon the methods of evaluation for the
course. The Community Partner Representative will
also provide an evaluation of the project once the

concerning the project)
Project Outcome --> Students will work individually
to design a solution for the Community Partner. The
project will be presented to the client based upon
specifications in the Project Sheet provided. Upon
completion of the project, the Community Partner
will select one design solution that best suits their
organization. Although this is a competition, you will
need to help each other by providing constructive
feedback to fellow classmates.
DO NOT LOSE YOUR PROJECT SHEETS.

Goals
Aesthetic: Create effective graphic symbols, logos,
logotypes, and corporate identity systems which are
client/project specific and relevant.
500 sheets Xerox/ Typing Paper (turned in on
second class day)
Conceptual: Meaning through words and images;
how the symbol communicates.
External Hard Drive (Lacie, Western Digital, Iomega
are all good brands)
Structure: The underlying structure (visible or
invisible) that holds the piece together.
USB Flash drive (1GB or higher)
Technique: Utilize various methods of image making
specific to the project intention.
Course Content / Course Requirements
Logotypes: Effective use of typography revolving
around design principles: balance, movement,
rhythm; spatial relationships/interrelationships,
dynamic space to create an effective identity;
computer illustration; type.
Symbol Development (Trademarks and Logos): Role
of graphic symbols, symbols as identity, trademark
development, icons and supergraphics
Corporate Identity Systems: Research and
Development of successful stationary systems to
identify a client or organization
Formal Presentation and Class Critique
The content and due dates for each step in the
project process is outlined on the Project Sheet.
High Quality Inkjet Photo paper (various sizes)
25 pack of CD-R and DVD-R with plastic cases or
sleeves

*Xylene (Colorless Blender) Marker (can be purchased

19 x 24 Tracing Paper (for sketches and covers)
18-24” metal ruler with non-slip back
X-acto knife/ no. 11 blades
