Systems by Graphing. Word Problems Homework 2
For each problem, write a system of equations, graph both lines, and then use the intersection point
to answer the question(s).
1. You want to deliver a package to Spain. The FedEx delivery service charges $30 flat fee plus
$4 per additional kilogram. You can also use the USPS Priority Mail which charges you
$6.50 per kilogram.
Write the equations that represent the total cost of Option A and B.
(The x-coordinate value will be the number of kilograms, the y – coordinate value will be
the total cost).
Graph these equations and solve the system.
For how many kilograms will the total cost of each option be the same? What is this total
cost?
2. You often go to school by bus. You have two payment options. Option A is to buy a monthly
pass and pay $1.50 per ride and a monthly pass costs $15. Option B is to pay $3 per ride.
Write the equations to represent the total cost of Option A and B.
(The x-coordinate value will be the number of rides, the y – coordinate value will be the total
cost).
Graph these equations and solve the system.
For how many rides will the total cost of each option be the same? What is this total cost?
3. You like to watch plays at the local performing arts center. You have two payment options.
Option A is to buy a discount card which will cost you $200, and then $25 per play. Option B
is to pay $50 per play.
Write the equations to represent the total cost of Option A and B.
(The x-coordinate value will be the number of plays, the y – coordinate value will be the total
cost)
Graph these equations and solve the system.
For how many movies will the total cost of each option be the same? What is this total cost?
(The x-coordinate value will be the number of plays, the y – coordinate value will be the total
cost)
