Chapter 2 Section 2
Simplifying Expressions
Objective: To simplify algebraic expressions using properties of operations
Like Terms: terms that have the same variable factors
(the same base and same exponents)
Coefficient:
Examples:
a numerical factor of a term with a variable
2a and 5a
5x2 and 12x2
6ab2 and 7ab2
Unlike Terms: terms with different variable parts
Examples:
8a and 8b
6x2 and 7x
15a2b and 45ab2
Combining like terms: the process of adding or subtracting like terms
Distributive Property: allows you to multiply each term inside a set of
parentheses by a factor outside the parentheses

= 3n + 6
