TheEarliestOrganizaFonofMedicalPhysicistsintheUnitedStates
HistoryofRAMPS
Duringthemid1940’s,physicistsassociatedwithmedicalinsFtuFonsinthemetropolitanNewYorkCityregioncommencedmeeFngstocompareinstrumentaFonandtheirmeasurementsofthe
quanFtyofradioacFvityinsoluFonsinmedicaluse.Thiswasnecessaryforuniformity,andalsoforaccuracysincethenaFonalstandardavailableappearedtobeinconsistent.Thiswasjustpriortothe
availabilityofmegavoltagexraysandelectrons,andtheprimaryconcernofthephysicistswasassociatedwiththeusesofradioacFvenuclides.Theclinicalusesofiodine-131andotherradionuclides
(phosphorus-32,ydrium-90,etc.)werebeingacFvelyexploredandagreementontheamountofacFvitybeingadministeredwasessenFal.Suchmeasurementsledtothe‘‘NewYorkMillicurie,”which
servedavitalpurpose.
By1948themeeFngsofthesemedicalphysicistswereonascheduledbasiswithelectedofficersandrecords.ThoseiniFallyacFveinRAMPSincludedMonesBerman,HansonBlatz,CarlBraestrup,
GiacchinoFailla,SergeiFeitelberg,ElizabethFocht,HiramHart,LillianJacobson,RobertLoevinger,LeoMarinelli,EleanorOshry,EdithQuimby,EdwardSiegel,AaronYalow,RosalynYalow,and
others.Thisgroupestablishedthemeasurementprocedureforthe‘‘NewYorkMillicurie,’’andtheirmeeFngsservedbothscienFficandprofessionalfuncFons.AconsFtuFonwaswridenin1954byR.
YalowandJ.Laughlin,andrevisedin1957bythem.RAMPShasconFnuedtogrowfromitsmodestbeginningtoacurrentmembershipofabout150andconductsmonthlymeeFngswhicharewell
adended.TheirmeeFngsusuallyincludescienFficpresentaFonsbyamemberorguestonphysicalaspectsoftreatment,diagnosis,nuclearmedicine,orprotecFon.Also,asymposiumonaperFnent
scienFfictopicisheldannually.RAMPSwelcomedtheiniFaFonoftheAAPMandbecameachapterinit.

wasadministeredonavoluntarybasistoradiologicalresidentsin
theNewYorkCityareaatasessionheldattheNewYorkAcademy
ofMedicinewiththecooperaFonoftheNewYorkRoentgenRay
Society.TheresponsewassoenthusiasFcthatthisexaminaFon
hasbecomeanannualevent.Itisnowbeingusedthroughoutthe
UnitedStatesthroughthecourtesyofRAMPSandoftheAAPM.In
recentyears,separateexaminaFonsforDiagnosFcRadiologyand
RadiaFonOncologyhavebeenproduced.Teachinghasalways
beenanimportantacFvityofthemedicalphysicistinhis/her
insFtuFonandtheestablishmentofthisexaminaFonprocedure
wasamethodofassisFngtheeducaFonofresidentsinthe
physicalaspectsofradiology.
