RAMAIAH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MSRIT)is a Self Financing Institution Established In Bangalore in the year 1962 by the industrialist and philanthropist, Late Dr. M S Ramaiah. MSRIT, as well as 17 other reputed institutions offering Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Hotel, and Business Management and Legal Education are managed by the Gokula Education Foundation(GEF). The mission statement of GEF is “To deliver education and health for the betterment of mankind”. MSRIT has an ISO9001:2008 certification from BVQI.. NBA has accredited all eligible Engineering Departments offering Bachelor degree programmes. MSRIT is one of the few institutes with faculty student ratio of 1: 15 and achieves excellent academic results as indicated by the significant number of VTU ranks bagged every year. The institute is a participant of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), an initiative of the Government of India. All the departments have competent faculty, over 98% of them being postgraduates or PhD holders. Some of the distinguished features of MSRIT are: State of the Art Laboratories, Individual computing facility to all faculty members, Campus wide networking connecting all 2000 systems to the net. All research departments are active with sponsored projects and more than 130 scholars are pursuing PhD. The Centre for Advanced Training and Continuing Education, Centre for Research and Industrial Consultancy, and Entrepreneurship Development Cell are set up on campus. MSRIT has a strong Placement and Training Department with a committed team, a fully equipped Sports Department, Large Airconditioned Library with over 80,000 books with subscription to more than 300 International and National Journals. The Digital Library subscribes to several online ejournals like IEEE, JET etc. MSRIT is a member of DELNET, and AICTE INDEST Consortium. MSRIT has a modern auditorium, several hitech conference halls, all airconditioned with video conferencing facilities. It has excellent hostel facilities for boys and girls. MSRIT Alumni have distinguished themselves by occupying high positions in India and abroad and are in touch with the Institute through an active Alumni Association. MSRIT obtained Academic Autonomy for all its UG and PG programmes in the year 2007. MSRIT celebrated its Golden Jubilee during the academic year 2011 2012. MSRIT, along with other institutions managed by the GEF, is situated on a sprawling 85 acres campus locatedin the heart of the city, and is only 7 kilometres from Bangalore City Railway Station/Central Bus Stand and is 25 kilometres from Bangalore International Airport. About the Workshop: Music has always been appreciated 'qualitatively' by the listeners. Is it possible to 'quantitatively' analyse the musical data? Is it possible for a machine to 'learn' these musical analytics techniques of how to recognize a 'raga', 'taala' and what makes a combination of 'swaras' musical? Is it possible for a machine to find digital signatures of musical stalwarts such as 'Thyagaraja' and quantitatively give proof of how one composer has influenced the work of another composer? Objective: This workshop aims to introduce the participants to the extremely interesting domain of analysing musical data, specifically South Indian classical music, using computers. Our brain is instantly able to recall the lyrics, tune and composition details of a song the moment we hear it. In Carnatic music, we are able to identify which 'taala'(rhythm) the song being rendered belongs to, which 'raga'(scale) it is etc. It is indeed intriguing to study how our brain is able to recognise between a musical note and a nonmusical note among the various permutations of the seven basic 'swaras', used in any 'raga', namely, 'sa','ri','ga','ma','pa','da','ni'. Music has always been appreciated 'qualitatively' by the listeners. These questions can be answered by understanding the realm of machine learning, specifically neural networks. This workshop will provide answers to these questions by having speakers from the realm of music, neuroscience (medicine) as well as machine learning. A set of demonstrations of projects done in the area of musical data analytics is arranged. There will also be a field visit to Radel Electronics Pvt Ltd, a pioneer in manufacturing musical instruments. About the Presenters: Dr Shantala Hegde is a clinical psychology consultant in Adult Psychiatry Unit of NIMHANS. Currently she is engaged in research work in the area of musiccognition and neuromusicology. She is presently leading several projects in the area of music cognition and neuromusicology funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). Aspects such as the pitch perception and identification of Ragas of the Indian Classical music using electrophysiological parameters (EEG/ERP), appraisal of emotion induced via music, specifically Indian Classical music are being examined under these projects. Dr.N. Raghu is a Programme Executive & a graded music composer at All India Radio. His specialities include voice trainer, broadcast media training, radio play, scriptwriting, radio media planning, music composing, Kannada light music and musicological research. His publications include among others 'RASAMSHA A New Hypothesis in Indian Music', 'PRAJAVANI', a weekly column about 'Voice Culture for Media Enthusiasts' (Specific to Kannada Language). He has won many National Awards for his radio plays and productions. Mr.Vijay Raghava S R completed his Masters Degree in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University, New York. He is currently working at National Instruments, Bangalore, as staff software engineer and is doing his research in Carnatic Music Information Retrieval using neural networks. He comes from a family of musicians and has many musical concerts and publications to his credit.
