Workshop Presenters Wanted for the

Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult ESOL

The SABES PD Center for ESOL is seeking skillful practitioners to join our team in delivering workshops aligned to the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult English Speakers of Other

Languages in various locations across the state. The workshops focus on the following professional standards:

1.

Principles of Second Language Acquisition

2.

The Components of Language

3.

Intercultural Awareness

4.

ESOL Curriculum and Instructional Design

5.

ESOL Instructional Delivery and Classroom Management

6.

ESOL Assessment

Qualifications:

Applicants must have at least one of the following qualifications and a minimum of four years teaching ESOL, or providing ESOL professional development to ACLS-funded programs and/or providing education leadership in an ACLS-funded ESOL program.

BA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

MA in Applied Linguistics

Teaching English as a Second Language (certificate)

MA Teacher Certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages

Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA certification)

Applicants must possess strong written and oral communication skills including effective public speaking and/or experience in delivering presentations.

Applicants must have expertise in using technology, such as expertise in using laptops and

PowerPoint to deliver presentations.

Applicants must be familiar with the MA ABE Curriculum Framework for ESOL http://www.doe.mass.edu/acls/frameworks/esol.pdf; the College and Career Readiness

; and the ACLS Guidelines www.doe.mass.edu/acls/abeprogram

Applicants must have experience in implementing or providing professional development regarding the ACLS Policy for ESOL curriculum and instruction

Preferred Qualifications

MA TESOL or MA Applied Linguistics and a minimum of five years teaching adults in an ACLS funded program combined with additional graduate level courses in related areas including some or all of the following:

o Evaluation and application of knowledge of ESOL instructional approaches and best practices for promoting English language development for ESOL students o Application of knowledge of processes and stages of language acquisition o Application of contemporary English grammatical structures problematic for students. o Methods and techniques to assess student progress in English speaking skills. o Methods and techniques to apply knowledge of theory, research, and practice related to developing reading and writing skills and reading comprehension in English as a second language. o Methods and techniques for approaches to instruction for the diversity of ESOL students language needs and cultural backgrounds

Presented or published articles related to the acquisition of adult English as a Second Language and ESOL instruction in scholarly journals or other similar professional avenues.

Experience using Blackboard or other online learning management system.

Experience delivering professional development workshops, coaching, training, or technical assistance to ESOL practitioners.

Previously attended at least one of the ESOL Professional Standards trainings

Essential Functions

Participate in Training of Trainers (FY16): o Review Introduction to the Standards (online course) o Observe the Professional Standard workshop on which you will be presenting o Meet with trainers from the SABES PD Center for ESOL o Attend Blackboard webinar

Deliver Workshops (FY17): o Present 5-hour Professional Standard workshop o Facilitate online discussions between sessions on Blackboard (very basic Blackboard competency required - training and support provided) o Conduct follow up, continue post workshop discussions o Review and provide feedback on pre and post session assessments

Provide documentation and feedback to SABES PD Center on effectiveness and improvements needed in the ESOL Professional Standards professional development offerings

Compensation

$350 to participate in training of trainers in FY16 o Observe training (five hours) o Meet with SABES PD Center for ESOL trainers (four hours) o Participate in Blackboard training (one hour)

$975 to deliver each Standards workshop in FY17 o Preparing for the Standards workshop (five hours) o Presenting the Standard workshop (five hours) o Follow-Up on Blackboard and Pre-Post Assessment (five hours)
