Enrollment
Process
(application, orientation, PEP, placement tests)
(Short) Ambassadors: how to use them more effectively/more?
That’s going on now. Transfer Club and Ambassadors are present at PEP
Alternative placement:
● (Long) A. Use high school transcript grades as a factor in determining placement.
For a variety of reasons, consider requiring the transcript with matriculation (AP scores, foreign language requirements, counseling appt help, etc.)
● (Long) B. Using capstone projects, such as Senior
Projects, as an alternative placement. In addition to
AP and SAT/ACT/EAP scores.
● (Medium/long) C. Norming rubrics among English depts. (high school depts. collaborate with college dept.)
Placement Testing
● Off testing
(Long) paper
(Short/medium) electronic
Think about first generation college-bound students.
Students ‘don’t know what they don’t know.’
How can we at high school level and community college level help them know it?
Off-site placement testing with paper? (one-toone mobile devices) CAN WE REMOVE THIS:
IT’S CLEAR FROM THE IT FOLKS THAT
THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE POSSIBLE.
High school students are ‘hand-held’. How do we help students make the transition to their first year? “Medium” hand holding…
Variety of times for PEP (later, Saturdays, mornings during spring break, etc.) Scheduling for student needs rather than staff needs/preferences. Increase numbers (40 rather than 30), knowing there will be noshows.
WHAT IS THE CONCERN? IS THIS A
COMMENT OR AN IDEA? (IF IDEA, NEEDS
TO GO IN MIDDLE COLUMN.)
Interactive Enrollment/Orientation Process:
● (Short) A. Streamline orientation (IE: complete more activities in one fell swoop, less ‘talking at’ students, and shorter orientation.)’ Provide only enough information needed to move students from one step to another (segmented program). Look at different models ( Los Angeles Trade Tech?) Do we frontload too much information? Mid-semester check-in
● (Short) B. Make enrollment process/orientation more interactive Interact with current CSM students as part of orientation.. Enrollment process is new for students. Incentives for arriving for PEP.
● (Short) C. Expand “Summer Bridge” or “Spring
Bridge” with First Year sub-committee (students with
C avg or lower, or recommendations from counselors?) What is the curriculum?
● (Short) D. Have high schools transport students as a cohort to engage in enrollment process.
● (Short) E. Can CSM consider offering Connect to
College prior to any PEP orientations?
● (Short) F. Increase the variety of PEP times offered.
Saturdays? More morning opportunities. More earlier afternoon appts.
● (Short) G. Increase # of students in a PEP appt time to 40 (to counteract no-shows)
● (Short) H. Late registers: Handout/bookmark of matriculation steps.
Orientation for late registrants? (students starting process in May, July, August?) WHAT
IS THE CONCERN?
Require students to submit a transcript with their application. WHAT IS THE CONCERN?
Category
Public relations
(tours, outreach ON campus during enrollment and outreach OUT to feeder schools, social media)
Ideas already generated
● (Medium/Long) A. Increase PR staff to focus on communications with feeder high schools.
● (Short/medium) B. Improve summer communication/ activities/clubs/ visibility of how fun CSM is. Summer Bridge program.
● (Short) C. Outreach around financial aid.
● (Medium) D. CSM hosts counselors/college and career advisors yearly . IS THERE MORE TO THIS IDEA? IT IS ALREADY
BEING DONE.
● (Long) E. More directed outreach with HS staff; create a partnership.
● (Short) F. Encourage students to take college classes at the
Notes/ To Think Abouts
Think about first generation college-bound students.
How to make students feel welcome and a part of the school
college while a HS student.
● (Long) G. More college classes at the high schools
Category Ideas already generated Notes/ To Think Abouts
Counseling connection between high school feeders and community college
Creating a partnerships with feeder schools
● (Medium) A. Counselor Watch
(high school counselors meet with
CSM counselors around at-risk students.) for example: work against “summer melt”
(activating summer time to be sure the most at-risk students come to class Day 1.)
MORE IDEAS NEEDED ABOUT HOW TO
COUNTERACT.
Academic link to summer melt article
● (Short/Medium) B. Dedicated CSM counselor per feeder high school to act as conduit between CSM and high schools during the high school year a summer.
Dedicated high school counselor ON the
CSM campus who is dedicated (first year only) to those students and their well-being, course selection, etc.
1 CSM counselor works with a high school or an entire district’s graduates (Replace
Steve Morehouse.)
Think about first generation college-bound students.
Survey for first semester students, “What is one thing you wish you knew prior to starting college?” “What piece of advice would you have for a new student?” “What should all students know about CSM?” IS THIS OUR PURVIEW? OR DOES IT
BELONG TO THE NEXT TASK FORCE? OR IS THIS AN
INFORMATION-GATHERING DEVICE? IF SO, GOES
SOMEWHERE ELSE.
