PROFILE THE CLASS OF 2018 is a diverse and accomplished group of students from across the country. The 304 students come from 41 states and the District of Columbia, and attended 143 undergraduate institutions. Before law school, KEISHA JAMES ’18 conducted research in Ethiopia on women’s access to legal services and also interned with an organization working on educational and employment equality in Jordan. “One of the reasons I decided to attend UVA Law was the wide range of opportunities to continue exploring my interests in human rights law, public interest law and international law. I wanted to attend a law school that would allow me to gain practical experience as well as challenge me academically,” she said. “One of my professional goals is to challenge discrimination and defend the rights of those who have been mistreated, and I thought UVA Law would be the perfect place to take the first step in achieving that goal.” CLASS OF 2018 FAST FACTS [AS OF AUG. 31, 2015] 168 median LSAT 163-170 25%-75% LSAT 3.86 median GPA 3.60-3.94 25%-75% GPA 20-35 age range 304 students enrolled from 4,568 applicants 54% men 46% women 23% minorities and foreign nationals 63% have post-college work experience STUDENTS COME FROM 41 STATES AND WASHINGTON, D.C. FRANCISCO FERNANDEZ-DEL CASTILLO ’18 was born in Mexico City and came to the United States at a young age. “I always felt I had a foot in two worlds,” he said. “This feeling led me to pursue my interest in Arabic by moving to Cairo. These experiences gave me an appreciation for ambiguity and a desire to understand people whose experiences are very different from my own, qualities I hope will serve me well in my legal career.” Shoell took an enlightening missionary trip to Thailand after her junior year of college. During the journey she helped plant rice and taught English, and found an interest in human rights law. Fernandez-del Castillo worked as a freelance translator before law school, and is fluent in Egyptian, colloquial Arabic, modern standard Arabic and Spanish. “I chose Virginia for the community,” he said. “I knew Charlottesville and UVA were communities that would welcome me and my family.” “I realized during my trip [that] working with people one-on-one is what I loved,” she said. “Being able to interact with people you’re helping made a big difference to me.” WHERE GRADUATES GO TOP JOB LOCATIONS, CLASSES OF 2012-14 District of Columbia New York 181 Virginia 161 California 65 Texas 62 213 Georgia 41 Massachusetts 32 Pennsylvania 31 North Carolina 24 Florida 22 Illinois 20 Maryland 20 Ohio 20 Delaware 15 Alabama 13 New Jersey 13 Colorado 11 VIRGINIA LAW FAST FACTS FOUNDED 1819 by Thomas Jefferson DUAL-DEGREE PROGRAMS in accounting, business, economic law, English, foreign affairs, government, history, philosophy, public health, public policy, medicine, and urban and environmental planning STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS TOTAL J.D.
