Student Ambassadors of Service
The Student Ambassadors of Service seeks to increase awareness of social issues and community needs, while also identifying ways for students to get involved addressing those topics through a diverse set of programs and projects. Volunteer Description: SAS members serve in an advisory capacity while at the same time serving as communication specialists and project developers for specific areas. The students provide feedback on promotional materials, project planning, and program development as they relate to promoting meaningful service to students. SAS members coordinate programs to raise awareness on issues in the community. Gained knowledge and experience as an SAS member may include, but not limited to:  Assisting with planning special events and programs  Coordinating special student community projects  Communicating with students through social networking  Enhancing communication skills through speaking to students  Developing creativity and analytical skills through advisory decisions Desired Qualifications:  Good oral communication skills  Excellent writing skills  Ability to work with a team  Positive attitude  Basic knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint  Basic knowledge of social networking sites Benefits of Membership: Students who actively serve as a Student Ambassador of Service will gain valuable skills in the areas of public relations, marketing, program development, and communications. The group is a great opportunity to develop leadership and decision‐making skills. Communication through various forms will be expected regularly, which will prove as an asset in any future career. Students who actively serve with the SAS for two years are eligible to receive the service medallion as recognition during graduation. Incentives are also provided throughout the year for participation in activities. Student Participant Requirements: 1. Students should be in good standing at Western Kentucky University. 2. Each member of the board is required to participate in two service events per semester coordinated through the ALIVE Center. 3. Each student should speak at a minimum of one organization or class during the semester. Website: www.wku.edu/alive
4. Students are expected to complete 10 hours of service. Service may include SAS activities, service‐
learning projects, participation in service‐related activities, and/or volunteer service. 5. Students are expected to respond regularly to email and/or telephone communication. 6. Students should be available to attend meetings. Time commitment: Outside of business meetings, Student Ambassadors of Service can anticipate dedicating at least one hour a semester to planning and speaking to a group and ten hours related to service. Members can count service‐related activity created by the Student Ambassadors of Service, service‐learning projects, participation in service‐related activities, and/or volunteer service. Selection process: Participation as a Student Ambassador of Service is based on the ability to meet the requirements listed above in the description. Students may not be considered to participate if his/her schedule does not allow for attendance at meetings. Students are not expected to have previous experience in community service.
