Campus and Community

Partnerships

The ALIVE CCP works to expand opportunities for campus and community partnerships through community engagement activities, which may include community-based research, service-learning or volunteerism. The Center staff works with individuals, nonprofits, government, faith-based organizations, schools, and businesses to identify community needs and assets. We then connect partners with like interests to address those needs.

Community-Based Research

The ALIVE CCP connects

WKU students and faculty with opportunities to conduct research that addresses communitydetermined needs, builds upon community strengths, and actively involves community partner as co-investigators. The results from community-based research (CBR) at WKU are disseminated in multiple ways, including academic journals and community outlets.

Graduate students can develop

CBR projects by serving as a graduate assistant for the Hill House program. Faculty, staff, students and community partners can also apply for funding to develop communitybased research projects through the

Community Partnership Incentive

Awards program.

Service-Learning

Service-learning may be described as “learning by doing while helping others.” It is considered a form of experiential learning in which students participate in and reflect on an organized activity that meets learning objectives and identified community needs at the same time. The ALIVE CCP supports both co-curricular and coursebased, credit-bearing curricular service-learning programs.

Faculty and students at WKU can develop service-learning projects utilizing the $100 Solution™ program, which is based on the notion that small amounts of money can make a difference. This servicelearning tool also challenges students to think beyond charity models to address social issues.

Campus and community partners can also apply for funding to develop other service-learning projects through the Community

Partnership Incentive Awards program.
