Rhonda Snyder 3 Plano ISD Council of PTAs 2013 Award Honorees Mrs. Tamra Sadafsaz, PTA Leadership Mentor – National PTA Life Achievement Award Tamra Sadafsaz has been involved in PTA for 18 years and a total of 21 years if you include Early Childhood PTA. She has been President at all the schools that her boys have attended: Saigling, Haggard, Vines, and Plano Senior High School. Tamra has served in just about every position that a PTA Board has to offer. She has also been on PTA Council for Plano ISD for 8 years and currently serving as a Leadership Mentor. She no longer has a child in the school system but she still likes to be active in the PTA. This year she was helping a PTA that needed some mentoring and she had a hard time finding a President to lead the Meadows PTA. So without thinking twice, she became the President of Meadows PTA and currently their PTA is doing really well. They have almost 200 PTA members and the PTA is doing wonderful things for the students, staff, and families of Meadows Elementary. She loves to volunteer and give back to the community where she lives. Tamra has served for 2 years on the Key Communicators Committee for the school district. Tamra is also a member of the Junior League of Collin County and this is her 10th Active Year and is currently the Secretary for the JLCC Board. She has been a member of the Women’s Auxiliary for Children’s Medical Center at Legacy for 3 years now and currently serves as the Hospitality Chairman. Tamra is on the Ski Plano Committee in charge of Volunteers for the event. Tamra was recognized by the State Board of Education and was awarded the Heroes for Children Award on November 21, 2008 for District 12. Tamra co-chaired the Teacher of the Year Gala the last 2 years and what a great experience that was to honor our wonderful teachers in our school district. This will be Tamra’s last year being involved in PTA but she will continue to stay involved in the community. She is married to her husband Moe for 25 years and they have three boys, Mirza John age 22 who is a Personal Banker at View Point Bank, Christopher age 20 who plays basketball for Fisher College in Boston, and Marcus age 18 who is a freshman at Collin College. 4 Minoo Wille, Arts in Education Chair –Life Membership Award For the past three years, Minoo has served as the PTA Council Arts in Education chair. After the position was left open following her initial two year term, she graciously stepped in and offered to fill the vacancy for one more year. She has previously served as the Arts in Education Chair at Rasor & Dooley PTAs, and Vines HS PTSA. Her love for the arts has allowed her to flawlessly coordinate & promote Reflections programs at 69 schools and organize all of their entries for the Council level judging and Awards presentation. She salutes the nearly 300 Fine Arts teachers and JROTC instructors who help students discover their strengths, pursue their passions and express themselves in creative ways every day. Kathywould like to express her appreciation to her husband, Kent, who has always been her biggest fan! Jim Hirsch, Associate Superintendent for Academic & Technology Services –Life Membership Award Jim Hirsch has served students, parents, and teachers in public education for 38 years, including the last 17 years in Plano ISD. As a mathematics educator and technology leader, that means his career began BEFORE the VHS videotape was invented by JVC! In addition to serving as the Associate Superintendent for Academic and Technology Services in Plano ISD, Jim serves on a number of national advisory boards such as Microsoft's CIO Advisory Panel and eSchool News' editorial advisory board. Jim, and his wife Sharon, made the decision in 1996 to move their four children and head 1,000 miles south from Minneapolis, MN to join the community of educators here in Plano. This Life Membership Award is a highlight to these long years of service where Jim's focus has remained on the children in our classrooms. As you might expect, the entire Academic and Technology Services division is clearly focused on that same student body and makes coming to work each day a worthwhile endeavor. 5 Texas PTA Extended Service Award Honorees In 1987, the Texas PTA Board of Directors developed criteria for an Extended Service Award to be given to those people who have received an Honorary Texas PTA Life Membership AND who have continued to give outstanding service AND who have been actively involved in the Texas PTA for ten years or more. Plano West Senior High Amy Abernathy, 1st VP, Aide - Extended Service Award "Loyal, organized, diplomatic, calm - these are the qualities that make this person a superb volunteer!” says a fellow volunteer, “You want to work with her because she makes it FUN!” She grew up in Texas, attended the Univ. of North Texas, joined a coed business fraternity, and earned a degree in finance. Initially working for Prudential Insurance, she went to work at a branch of Copeland Companies that sold 403B plans to non-profits. She focused on the individual and what would work best for them. She immediately got really involved in PTA. She has done every job PTA-wise that you could possibly do. She served as Room Mom every year. She took tons of photographs and helped paint over 350 Life-Size Nintendo WII characters, one for each 8th grade Graduation. I guess you can say I got my ‘MRS.’” Married for 30 years to Joe Halverson, their 2 children are Sara (22) and Eric (18). Aldridge PTA Treasurer Samantha McKenzie describes Martha as a “tireless volunteer” and Dad’s Den Leader Trey Otte said “Take a look around Aldridge and you will find many ways that her leadership has made a positive impact.” Martha has previously volunteered as room mom and office assistant, and is such a familiar face at Aldridge you would think she is a staff member. Martha was hesitant to accept this honor but her Board insisted and she accepted with the graciousness she is so respected for. She has been a PTA member for 20 years. She’s the quintessential Kindergarten teacher who moved to first grade just this year. After 19 years teaching Kindergarten, with the past 6 years here at Bethany, she didn’t expect to love 1st grade even more! While her accomplishments as team leader, multiple certifications, and long career as a teacher are impressive; the biggest impression anyone gets from Mrs. Gillmore is the sense of a loving Mother & Grandmother. She’s been a minister’s wife for 40 years and would much rather talk about her six children (including in-laws) and six grandchildren than her B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies from University of Mary Hardin Baylor. When she references her “babies” she’s just as likely to be talking about her students as her grandkids—and her affection extends out to the parents of her students: “Parents are my kids too. Laura is so thankful to have met so many wonderful people in the PISD community, especially at Carlisle Elementary. She is very grateful for all the love and attention that has been given to her children over the years by the teachers, principal, staff, librarian, nurse and office at Carlisle, SMS and Clark. In addition to all the time Laura spends volunteering at PISD schools, she also volunteers every Wednesday night at her church, Fellowship Church Plano, in the youth group called “The Mix.” Laura and her family volunteer “as needed” in various other areas of their church, as well. In her free time, she loves spending time with family and friends, traveling, and playing and watching sports! Hedgcoxe Elementary Nick Foligno, Member/Volunteer - Life Membership Award For the past six years, Nick has been one of the most visible fathers at Hedgcoxe. He is one of the parents who is always available to do the “small jobs” from serving ice cream at Meet the Teacher, to running the midway at the carnival, to being at all the classroom parties, and cooking burgers with the Dad’s Club at the family picnic. However, despite his full-time job in Dallas, he has also been willing to take on the really BIG jobs as well. When our school first considered starting a golf tournament as part of a spring fundraiser, Nick stepped up to teach us all how it’s done. He single-handedly made all the arrangements with the golf course, solicited sponsors for holes, solicited and purchased prizes, and ran the show (of course he played, too!). This has been a tremendous success for us thanks to his guidance. For two years he also served as VP of Programs. His idea to move all our meetings to the evenings to accommodate working parents and then to provide dinner and a program at every meeting at first seemed a bit overwhelming. Nick was even frequently cooking dinner himself for 50 or more. Our attendance at parent programs has increased tremendously, and last year we were awarded a Texas PTA gold-level award for Parent Education Programming because of his visionary ideas. 16 Renee Javornik, PE Teacher - Life Membership Award If you are lucky, all of the teachers at your school are committed to the students and support the PTA. There are those rare few, however, who give so much more. “Coach Javornik” is one who is willing to share her gifts with the students and her time to support our PTA in reaching its goals – and she always does it with a smile. Since 2000, when her own children began attending Hedgcoxe, she has been hands-on at PTA events such as our carnival and spring fling. Last year, she and our school nurse started a “Girls on the Run” chapter at our school, volunteering her own time to meet with a group of 4th and 5th grade girls to work on establishing self-esteem and positive body image while training for a 5k. This year she helped to coordinate a Jingle Bell Fun Run for the students during the school day, in which they were encouraged to donate clothing to the Children’s Advocacy Center, but all the kids could participate in the run with hot cocoa upon completion. At the end of the day, 34 large bags of clothing were donated, and the children learned an important lesson. She also started a HAL program for the 1st graders in which they get to take home a stuffed bear that also comes with a bag of activities such as a Frisbee, jump rope, music CD, and games that encourage physical activity and time spent away from the TV. Directly with the PTA, she has served as Newcomers chair, but by far what she is most appreciated for by our board is that she provides childcare in the gym while parents listen to the monthly parent education programs, again lending her talents to play games and keep the kids entertained so parents really focus on the speaker. This award is our way of saying thank you. Lisa Nolte, Member/Volunteer - Life Membership Award In her nine years at Hedgcoxe, there are truly no events in which Lisa has not been involved in some form or another. Rarely the person to step in the limelight, she is one of the most loyal, committed, and dependable members of our PTA. Lisa has chaired Hospitality and Sunshine committees, but it is her behind-the-scenes work that cannot go unnoticed. Truly, our carnival would not be nearly as successful if Lisa had not overseen the classroom basket auction for 5 years, She has also run the Cheers and Tears breakfast for new kindergarten parents; been an integral part of our school Chez Snoopy restaurant for 3 years; coordinated school supply distribution for 5 years; worked the kindergarten rodeo 3 years; been a classroom parent; and decorated for the 5th grade sock hop, the spring fling, the carnival, and for class programs. You will see her on field trips, in the book fair, getting snacks for state-wide testing, helping with Fine Arts Day, and volunteering at the talent show. There is no award that can truly thank her for her dedication to the children of our school. 17 Hughston Elementary Lori Brooks, 5th Grade Teacher - Life Membership Award Lori Brooks has been a member of the Hughston Elementary PTA for many years, where she also teaches 5th grade. At Mathews Elementary, she served two years as VP of Ways and Means, has coordinated field day, spirit wear, served as a room rep and stepped in wherever needed.
