Baruch Bush delivered the Lawrence W. Kaplan
Lecture in Conflict Resolution, on “Breaking Free

the Legal System,” at the Federal Court House in
Pittsburgh on May 1. He also lectured on “The
Transformative Model of Mediation” for the New
York University Mediation Clinic at NYU Law
School on April 22. In addition, he presented a
“Master Class” with Dr. Joseph Folger on
“Rethinking Conflict: Popular Culture and the
Relational Orientation to Life,” as part of the
Second Annual Summer Skills Institute in
Transformative Practice, co-sponsored by Hofstra
Law School and the Institute for the Study of
Conflict Transformation, held on May 21-22.
Finally, he presented “Basic Skills for
Transformative Mediation” in the Summer Skills
Institute on May 19-20.
Bennett Capers presented “Policing, Race, and
Place” at the Hofstra Law School Junior Faculty
Colloquium on February 13, at a San Diego Law
School Faculty Workshop on April 4, and at the
Law and Society Conference in Montreal, Canada
on May 31. He also presented “Cross Dressing
and the Criminal” at the Law, Culture, and the
Humanities Conference at Boalt Hall School of
Law on March 28. Finally, he presented “On
Justitia” at the Literature and Law Conference at
John Jay College of Criminal Justice on April 11.
Ronald J. Colombo gave a presentation entitled
“Business Ethics as Applied Natural Law” to the
Murray Hill Institute in New York on May 14.
J. Herbie DiFonzo co-presented “DNA Evidence,
Forensics, and the ‘CSI Effect,’” for the Artists &
Lecturers Program, Farmingdale State College, on
March 6. He also co-taught a simulation
advocacy course in Cross-Examination and Expert
Testimony in Parenting Disputes at the
Association of Family and Conciliation Courts
Annual Conference in Vancouver, Canada on May
28. At the same conference, he presented
“Contemporary Marriage and Other Way to
Establish Families: From the 1950s to the 21st
Century,” as part of a panel on The New Lawyer:
Advanced Legal Practice in the 21st Century.
Janet Dolgin presented a paper, “Attitudes
Toward Embryonic Stem-Cell Research,” at the
second in a series of conferences at Hofstra
focusing on Biomedical Research and the Law.
She also presented a paper on “Choice and
Genetics” at Seton Hall Law School in February.
Finally, she presented two papers at Case Western
University School of Law in April, one entitled
“Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research,” and the
other entitled “Biological Elaborations.”
Monroe Freedman gave a presentation, “Ethical
Issues in Veteran’s Claims Representation,” at the
Judicial Conference for the United States Court of
Appeals for Veteran’s Claims, held in
Washington, D.C. in April. He also gave a
presentation entitled “Do Not Reveal Client
Perjury” to the National Association of Criminal
Defense Lawyers in New York City on May 2.
Leon Friedman gave a presentation on “Fair Use
Under the Federal Copyright Law” at Hofstra
University on February 28.
Mitchell Gans gave a presentation to trusts and
estates lawyers about the ethical issues involving
the United Jewish Appeal on February 13. He
also made a presentation sponsored by an
accounting firm on section 6694 of the Internal
Revenue Code on March 19.
Elizabeth Glazer presented “The Contingent
Right to Exclude” at the Junior Property Scholars
Conference, held at Widener Law School in
February. She presented “When Obscenity
Discriminates” at a faculty workshop at the
University of Illinois College of Law, also in
February. In addition, she presented “Unifying
the Right(s) to Exclude” at the Eleventh Annual
Conference for the Association for the Study of
Law, Culture, and the Humanities, held at

Berkeley in March. Finally, she participated in
the Roundtable on Distributive Justice and the
Charitable Contribution Deduction at the
University of Illinois College of Law in May.
John Gregory guest lectured in a philosophy
course on Contemporary Ethical Dilemmas,
addressing the status of animals before the law, in
April.
Joanna Grossman gave a faculty workshop at
Villanova Law School on February 8 entitled
“The Failure of Title VII as a Rights-Claiming
System.” She also presented a paper, “Pregnancy,
Equality, and Citizenship,” at the Law and Society
Association Annual Meeting in Montreal in May.
At the same conference, she participated in a
roundtable on “Thirty Years of AntiDiscrimination Law.”
Frank Gulino participated in a joint CLE
presentation of the Theodore Roosevelt American
Inn of Court and the Temple American Inn of
Court on the historic Amistad case on May 30 in
Philadelphia.
Grant Hayden gave a presentation on “The False
Promise of One Share, One Vote” at the Law and
Society Association Annual Meeting in Montreal
in May.
Susan Joffe gave a presentation entitled “Risks
and Opportunities: Legal Guidelines for Employee
Screening and Interviewing” to the
Nassau/Suffolk Nurse Recruiters Association on
March 5 at Winthrop Hospital.
Stefan Krieger presented “Out of the Shadow:
Clinical Legal Education” at the University of
Chicago Mandel Legal Aid Clinic’s 50th
Anniversary Symposium on February 23.
Holning Lau was a panelist at Towards Full
Inclusion: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity,
and Human Rights, a conference at the University
of Hong Kong on April 26. The conference was
sponsored by the University of Hong Kong
Faculty of Law and the International Commission
of Jurists. He also presented a paper on
globalization and human rights at “Theorising the
Global Legal Order,” a conference sponsored by
Swansea University School of Law in Wales on
May 22 and at the 2008 Annual Meeting of Law
& Society in Montreal on May 29.
Theo Liebmann served as a training workshop
creator and director for the California
Administrative Office of Courts, Interdisciplinary
Collaboration in Dependency Cases, in February
and April, 2008. He also participated on a panel
entitled “Nicholson v. Scoppetta: Three Years
Later,” a New York City Bar Association
Program held in March.
Serge Martinez gave presentations on May 7 at
the AALS Clinical Section conference and on
May 31 at Emory’s Center for Transactional Law
and Practice, both of which focused on the
problem of taking on complex cases in a clinical
practice.
Alan Resnick made a presentation on “Disclosure
Requirements for Members of Ad hoc
Committees in Chapter 11 Cases: The Northwest
Airlines Decision” at the 41st Annual Uniform
Commercial Code Institute in Washington, D.C.,
on April 18. He also gave a presentation entitled
“An Ethical Odd Couple? Trademarks and
Bankruptcy” at the International Trademark
Association Annual Meeting in Berlin, Germany
on May 19.
Andrew Schepard gave a presentation on Child
Custody, Visitation and Family Offense
Proceedings at the Annual Meeting of the New
York State Bar Association, held in New York on
February 1. He also gave a presentation on the

Conciliation Courts, held in Vancouver on May
30.
Norman Silber served as moderator of a panel,
entitled “Impact of Patent and Other Intellectual
Property Law on Research Utilizing Human
Embryonic and Adult Stem Cells, Cloning and
Genetic Engineering,” at a conference on stemcell research, held at Hofstra in March. He also
addressed the management and staff of
Consumers Union entitled “No Place for Honest
Men: The Origins of Consumers Union in the
American Marketplace,” on April 15. In addition,
he presented a paper “Perspectives on Online
Advertising,” at a conference on “The Law and
Business of Online Advertising,” held at Berkeley
on April 18. Finally, he presented a book review
of J. Fishman, “The Faithless Fiduciary,” at the
Law and Society Association Annual Meeting in
Montreal in May.
Barbara Stark presented a paper, “Theories of
Poverty,” at Notre Dame Law School on March
15. She also presented a paper “Across the
Universe,” at Osgoode Hall Law School on May
7.
Amy Stein contributed a podcast entitled “Being
A Good Citizen of A Law Firm” to the Suffolk
University Law School Series, “Transitioning
from One-L to Summer Legal Work,” available on
iTunes University.
Vern Walker gave an intensive, 4-day course
entitled “Lawyers, Judges, Regulators and
Scientists: Using the Precautionary Principle to
Decide Legal Cases” at the Scuola Superiore
Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy, from 5-8 May 2008.

government's role in protecting children from
abuse, in connection with the case of a woman
who killed her three children.
Leon Friedman was interviewed on Channel 12

PRO BONO SERVICE
John Gregory was elected to a new term as Vice
Chair of the National Center for Law and
Economic Justice, and reappointed to several of
its committees.
Monroe Freedman gave the commencement
address, entitled “Shot from Ethical Canons: The
Perils of Sardonic Humor,” at Ringling Bros.
Barnum and Bailey Clown School in Sarasota,
Florida on April 1.
Mitchell Gans submitted a letter to Treasury
about pending proposed regulations under section
6694 of the Internal Revenue Code.
Larry Kessler served as a faculty member for the
National Institute for Trial Advocacy Teacher
Training Program, held in Boston in March.
Richard Neumann served on an ABA site team
that inspected the University of San Francisco
School of Law in March.
Alan Resnick participated in a meeting of the
National Bankruptcy Conference in Washington,
D.C. in March. He also served as Chair of the
Committee on Local Rules of the United States
Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of
New York, which drafted proposed amendments
to the Local Rules.
Norman Silber was re-elected to the Board of
Directors of Consumers Union and also appointed
to its Executive Committee and elected as
Secretary to its Board of Directors.

Roy Simon was nominated as Democratic
Candidate for New York State Senate, 9th Senate
District (SW Nassau County).
Barbara Stark was appointed the John T.
Copenhaver Chair of Law at West Virginia
College of Law for the Fall 2008 semester.
Amy Stein served as a Brief Judge for the Annual
Moot Court Competition sponsored by the
National Center for Adoption Law and Policy at
Capital University School of Law. She also
served as a brief judge for the Scribes “Best of the
Best Competition.” Finally, she served as cochair of the Plainview/Old Bethpage High School
annual interscholastic moot court competition.
