At this university, she also discussed her study on incorporated law firms in Australia, “Evaluating Australia’s New Regulatory Regime for Unincorporated Law Firms.” Professor Fortney also presented her findings from this study on September 22, 2012, at the University of St. Thomas School of Law’s symposium, “Empirical Professional Ethics: Ethical Development in the Learning and Practice of Law.” Susan H. Joffe gave a presentation, “Learning to Listen: Simulating a Client Interview,” at the 15th Biennial Conference of the Legal Writing Institute, on May 31, 2012. Stefan Krieger gave the opening, keynote address at the international conference, “Complex Law Teaching: Knowledge, Skills and Values.” At this conference, Professor Krieger also presented a paper, Designing an Environment for Deliberate Practice: Storyboarding as a Method for Trial Preparation. Furthermore, on August 13, 2012, Professor Fortney spoke at an Ethics Forum in Sydney, Australia, organized by the Law Society for New South Wales, on the effects of globalization on the legal profession and the importance of lawyers developing cultural competence as a matter of professional responsibility. Julian Ku participated in a panel discussion on April 19, 2012, sponsored by the Federalist Society and the American Enterprise Institute. In it, he highlighted one of the arguments of his recent book, Taming Globalization: International Law, the U.S. Constitution, and the New World Order, coauthored by John Yoo of the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. Eric M. Freedman presented his paper, Habeas Corpus as a Legal Remedy, on April 18, 2012, at the Golieb Legal History Research Colloquium at NYU School of Law. Irina D. Manta served as an invited commentator at the University of New Hampshire School of Law's Second Annual Intellectual Property Scholar's Roundtable. The topic for the roundtable was "Intellectual Property and the Constitution.” Professor Freedman also participated in two panel discussions at the conference, “The Civil War on Trial: Legal Issues that Divided a Nation,” hosted by Albany Law School, from June 7-9, 2012. His remarks focused on habeas corpus and lessons from the Civil War. Ashira Ostrow presented her paper, Land Law Federalism, at the Junior Faculty Forum, sponsored by Harvard, Stanford and Yale Universities, from June 1-3, 2012. In addition, Professor Freedman presented at the Seventeenth Annual National Federal Habeas Corpus Seminar, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Defender Services, on August 16, 2012. Professor Ostrow also introduced this paper on May 5, 2012, at the University of Minnesota's workshop, “New Directions in Environmental and Energy Law, Policy, and Geography,” and on April 18, 2012, at the NYU School of Law “Colloquium on the Linda Galler was a featured speaker at the webinar, “Amendments and Penalties to Circular 230: What You Need to Know,” 3 Vern R. Walker helped to organize and presented a paper, A Process Approach to Inferences of Causation: Empirical Research from Vaccine Cases in the United States, at the Third International Conference on Quantitative Justice and Fairness, from May 22-24, 2012. Law, Economics and Politics of Urban Affairs.” James Sample gave a presentation on Citizens United, at a New York State Bar Association seminar entitled “Representing the Political Candidate in New York,” on June 15, 2012. Furthermore, Professor Walker presented his work on Hofstra Law School’s Research Laboratory for Law, Logic and Technology (LTT Lab), at SubTech 2012, the Twelfth International Conference on Substantive Technology in Legal Education, held from July 26-28, 2012. Professor Sample also spoke at Hofstra Law School’s Graduates Celebration and Awards Ceremony, on May 20, 2012, in recognition of being named Teacher of the Year by the class of 2012. Andrew Schepard moderated, presented at, and helped to organize the Institute, “Zealous Advocacy and Best Interests: Ethical Dilemmas and the Practice of Family Law,” at the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) Convention, on June 6, 2012. Professor Barron was also part of the senior faculty for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) teacher training course in New York City, from June 7 – 9, 2012. 8 Robin Charlow was appointed to the newly-formed Legislative Action Committee of the North Shore School District. The group’s charge is to investigate the legal bases for issues of concern to public school districts, and to devise plans for necessary law reform to address them. Chinese and inclusion in a new book to be published by Beijing University Press, a leading academic publisher in China. Frank Gulino, along with three Hofstra Law students, accepted awards at a New York State Bar Association ceremony, held on July 30, 2012, for success in the Region 2 rounds of the National Trial Competition (NTC). Two teams of Hofstra Law students reached the finals in the regional NTC; one team was named co-Regional Winner. One student also received an individual award as Second Place Best Overall Advocate in the competition. Professor Gulino, who served as Regional Coordinator for the Hofstrahosted tournament in February, also accepted awards on behalf of the Hofstra Law teams’ coaches, who won the Travis H.D. Lewin Award for Best Coaching in the region. J. Scott Colesanti and five of his present/former Securities Regulation students submitted a Comment Letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, on April 19, 2012. The letter expressed support for (and modifications to) the proposed "Volcker Rule." Michael Ende was installed as a director of the Nassau County Bar Association on June 4, 2012. He will also serve on a newlyestablished task force that is responsible for reviewing the new pro bono bar admission requirements established by New York’s Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman. Professor Gulino was also invited to join the editorial board of The Matrimonial Strategist, a monthly newsletter published by ALM (formerly American Lawyer Media). Susan Fortney was selected for inclusion in the 2012 edition of the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of Preeminent Women Lawyers. In addition, for the third year in a row, Professor Gulino served as deputy editor for the annual Year in Review issue of The International Lawyer, the official publication of the ABA’s Section of International Law. In this role, he edited the following article on secured transactions and insolvency: Susan Jaffe Roberts, et al., International Secured Transactions and Insolvency, in International Legal Developments in Review: 2011, 46 INT’L LAW. 253 (No. 1 Spring 2012). Professor Fortney was also honored by donors at the Texas Tech University School of Law, who named a post-graduation fellowship program in her name: “The Fortney Fellows Public Service Program.” In addition, Professor Fortney was identified as one of the Top Rated Attorneys in Nassau and Suffolk Counties in 2012, in a March 2012 article on Long Island’s Top Legal Eagles. Irina D. Manta's article, Hedonic Trademarks, was accepted for publication in Volume 74 of the Ohio State Law Journal (forthcoming 2013). This article was also Monroe H. Freedman’s articles, Judge Frankel’s Search for Truth (123 U. PA. L. REV. 1060) and Our Constitutionalized Adversary System (1 CHAP. L. REV. 57, 1998), were selected for translation into 9 the American Society of International Law, held from November 29- December 1, 2012, in Washington, D.C. featured in Lawrence Solum's Legal Theory Blog as "highly recommended" scholarship. In addition, Professor Manta’s article, The Puzzle of Criminal Sanctions for Intellectual Property Infringement, which was originally published in 24 HARV. J. OF L. & TECHNOLOGY 469 (2011), was reprinted in 13 INTERNET L. & BUS. 293 (2012). Barbara Stark's paper, State Responsibility for Gender Stereotypes, was selected for presentation at the annual meeting of the AALS, on January 7, 2013. Professor Stark was also appointed a delegate of the American Society of International Law, to attend the 52nd session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and the meeting of the pre-session working group, for the 54th session of CEDAW. James Sample filed an amicus brief with former acting Solicitor General Walter Dellinger, on May 18, 2012. Written by counsel at Arnold & Porter LLP and Demos, the brief argued against summary reversal in the case of American Tradition Partnership, Inc. v. Bullock. Robert Wagner’s article, Criminal Corporate Character, was selected for publication in Volume 65 of the Florida Law Review (forthcoming 2013). Professor Sample was also named by “Top Wonks” as a distinguished professional in election law. Andrew Schepard was awarded the John E. VanDuzer Distinguished Service Award by the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, at its Convention in Chicago, on June 7, 2012. Several faculty members participated in the annual Scribes Best Brief Writing Competition: Frank Gulino served as a brief screener in the Best Brief Writing Competition. Professor Schepard was also named a Fellow of the “Educating Tomorrow’s Lawyers Project” of the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System, for his contribution to legal education.
